Heavy Grain Movement.
New York, Oct. 18.
The Times says that a very heavy movement of grain from the interior is now making itself felt decidedly at the seaboard in the accumulation of supplies, particularly of flour and wheat, resulting in a depression of values, in the absence of any favorable advances from abroad to sustain the market.
The business transaction in the market here yesterday was unusually large, especially in Spring wheat for prompt and forward delivery, and also in grades of flour suited to the English trade. The grain engaged on berth and charter yesterday exceeded 600,000 bushels, the bulk of which is for the English market, and of flour the engagements reported reached 10,000 barrels.
Bankruptcy Application.
San Francisco, Oct. 18.
Heyneman & Co., and six other mercantile firms of San Francisco, creditors of S. P. Norton of Los Angeles to the amount of $5,260, have petitioned the U.S. District Court that said Norton be declared a bankrupt. The petition charges that, on the 17th inst., Norton being insolvent, procured a legal process to be taken against him in favor of one B. Cohn, with intent to defeat the operation of the bankrupt law.
How to make a Glorious Nation.
Here is what they sing at public school examinations in a Vermont village, to the tune of "Yankee Doodle," visitors and all joining in the chorus:
If anything on earth can make
A great and glorious nation,
It is to give the little ones
A thourongredation.
Chorus.-Five times five are twenty-five,
Five times six are thirty,
Five times seven are thirty-five,
And five times eight are forty.
The New York Herald's Washington special asserts that Hayes is without a party in either House and he desires to have it so. All expressions made in Convention by members of the Administration confirm this somewhat startling view, and make it appear that the President's theory is that he shall execute the laws, but that he will absolutely refrain from the least attempt to influence the action of Congress or any member of it, on any subject; that he will make appointments and removals where the good of the public service requires, but will leave the question of confirmation absolutely to the Senate, without the slightest attempt to influence anybody's conclusions.
A petition signed by several hundred naturalized American citizens of Italian birth has been forwarded from San Francisco to Washington to Senator Booth, to be by him presented to President Hayes, suggesting that he urge upon the Senate the establishment...

The Las Bolsas.
The following telegram, which explains itself, was received yesterday:
SAN FRANCISCO, Oct. 19th, 1877.
Wm. R. Olden:
The U.S. District Attorney says the case of Las Bolsas is not in his office. He has not considered it, expressed any opinion, or been spoken to concerning it, and denies the statement of the Santa Ana News.
E. F. NORTHAM.
A Fitting Rebuke.
There are many men in existence who seem it no harm to speak slightly of women. According to their idea, it is quite meet that the strong should assail the weak. One of those robbers of reputation received a severe rebuke on a recent occasion. At a dinner at which no ladies were present, this man, in responding to a toast, "Woman," dwelt almost solely on the frailty of the sex, claiming that the best among them were little better than the worst, the chief difference being their surroundings. At the conclusion of the speech, a gentleman present rose to his feet and said:
"I trust the gentleman, in the application of his remarks, refers to his own mother and sisters, not ours."
The effect of this most just and timely rebuke was overwhelming; and the maligner of woman was covered with confusion and shame.
The Krishna Shoal Lighthouse, which was probably the finest structure of the kind in British India, has completely disappeared, so that no trace of its site can now be discovered. It was on the Gulf of Martaban, in the province of British Burma.
