From Sunday's Daily
—The rain of Thursday night did no harm to the crops in this vicinity. The threshers were at work in the fields on Friday morning.
—The scales for Miles Bros. warehouse will arrive on Monday, and they will commence receiving grain on Tuesday.
—Mark D. Congdon died in Los Angeles, on Friday, of typhoid fever.
—Thirty-two marriage licenses were issued in the county during the month of June.
—a large number of our citizens followed the remains of Justice Randall to the cemetery yesterday morning.
—a gentleman from Merced county reports the thermometer in that section at 150° in the shade. Our opinion is that "the boy lied."
—the officers of the Democratic Club at Downey are H. D. Montgomery, Chairman; C. M. Benbrook, Treasurer; W. P. McDonald, Secretary.
—the usual course was adopted at the Anaheim Cemetery meeting yesterday—it was postponed until next Saturday at the same hour.
—the Los Angeles County Bank has declared its third semi-annual dividend. Stockholders and term depositors will receive five per cent, and ordinary depositors four per cent.
—the is the way the Fourth was celebrated in Anaheim, if we may believe a San Francisco paper: "There was a grand ball at the Planters' Hotel, and a good display of fireworks. At midnight the Declaration of Independence was read by Arthur Helmann."
—the assessment roll has been footed up. We are indebted to Mr. A. W. Ryan, County Assessor, for the following statement:
1876.
Valve of land in the county ... $5,435.164
Value of improvements ... 1,328,810
The assessment roll has been footed up. We are indebted to Mr. A. W. Ryan, County Assessor, for the following statement:
1876.
Value of land in the county ... $5,435,164
Value of improvements ... 1,328,810
Value of town property ... 229,830
Value of improvements ... 221,820
Value of real estate in the city of Los Angeles ... 3,202,213
Value of improvements in the city of Los Angeles ... 1,365,834
Value of improvements on lands not enumerated above ... 61,777
Value of personal property in the county ... 1,948,710
Value of personal property in the city ... 853,462
Money ... 108,702
Grand total ... $11,844,322
The grand total of the assessment roll for 1875 was $15,019,613. From this total, however, is to be deducted, say, in round numbers, $2,000,000 worth of mortgages and solvent debts, although the amount was some greater, which items have not been assessed this year leaving a virtual increase of about $2,000,000 in the value of real and personal estate in the city and county for the present fiscal year. Last year the total real estate in the city and county was assessed at $7,748,044, the improvements at $2,557,705 — total $916,305,749. This year the real estate is assessed at $8,956,707, the improvements at $3,915,964—total $11,871,671, an increase in these two values of $1,-563,922.
The San Bernardino Guardian, in speaking of the project of offering aid to the Los Angeles & Independence Railroad to extend the road to that town, says:
"This county will not, by private enterprise, contribute $300,000 towards any project nor $100,000 at present. Money is too scarce. Wait for flush times. Were the 'subsidy' law still in force; we might—probably would—vote $100,000, providing we believed the projectors of the enterprise were in earnest. At present, we have little hope of raising liberal contributions for any enterprise; however promising."
A Double-Thread Lock-Stitch Machine.
PHYSIOLOGISTS RECOMMEND IT as a machine that can be used without harm by any one, because it requires so little effort of any kind, it being the MACHINE IN THE WORLD.
