Last evening the air came cool and delicious to those who had suffered from the heat of the day. Mr. John Roach took a late dinner on Thursday evening, and was so affected by the dessert that he was found by Deputy Sheriff Barham at a late hour communicating with a sympathizing lamp post. As the gentleman was destitute of hat, pantaloons and boots, our large hearted guardian furnished him with comfortable quarters at the public hotel, to keep him from catching cold, and Justice Clark generously let him off yesterday morning by exacting from him a small donation toward the support of the county. The auction sale yesterday was a success in some particulars. Mr. Michel succeeded in getting rid of his household furniture, and many of our friends succeeded in becoming possessors of a lot of articles they had no earthly use for. There are a few imitators of the immortal "Toodles" to be found even in Anaheim. The blacksmith shop on Lemon street has been leased by Messrs. McDermott and Grimshaw, two practical blacksmiths, who ask the public for their patronage, and promise satisfaction. The San Francisco Call publishes the full text of the report of D. L. Phillips, in regard to revenue frauds. The following extract may be of interest: "In Southern California there is a large number of grape distillers. These in the Fall season and during the vintage require constant attention and frequent visiting. I was at Los Angeles and Anaheim, where there is a large number of them. There is a Deputy Collector at Los Angeles and I learned that he utterly failed to visit and examine these distilleries, saying that he was not expected to do so. At Anaheim I was informed he claimed that if he visited the distilleries he would only do so on condition that his travelling expenses were paid. Yet this deputy, I believe, has always drawn his pay, which, as I learn, is $2,000 per annum." We called into the store of Messrs. P. Davis & Broa yesterday to inspect some honey raised by Mr. Ely, at his ranch near the Santa Margarita, in San Diego county. The honey was the most attractive in appearance of any we have ever seen in this market, being put up in patent frames. This style of sending honey to market is vastly superior to any other method. Messrs. Davis Bros. will ship two or three hundred cases to Chicago this season. The enterprise blacksmith shop devoirs to the public vertising column. We thought we wouldn't. Through all the weary morning of Saturday we sat in our sanctum, with that key in the corner within two feet of our elbow. Every time we turned, our eyes were drawn to that confounded key. We looked again and again at the festive billy goat on the card which warpailed to the keg. Sometimes we imagined we could see him nod his head to us in an inviting sort of a way. As the quicksilver rose in the thermometer, our patience weakened; and yesterday afternoon, unable to endure further mental agony, we tapped that keg. The nectar which came from the old "oaken bucket" is no more to be compared to the nectar that came from that keg of Reiser's Buck Beer than a nutshell is to be compared to a meeting house. And the goat, pettured on the barrel, does not begin to insinuate the way that beer will kick and buck when a fellow gets too much of it. From Tuesday's Daily. Mr. Gulick officiated in the Presbyterian church on Sunday night. Mrs. Dr. Geller died in Los Angeles on Sunday. E. W. Champlin will leave on One of Shakespeare's leaves was on the rampage on Sunday. His name was Macbeth, and he was posted on religious topics and was desirous of enlightening audience at the Anaheim Hotel. Becoming personal in his remarks, and enthusiastic in his actions, he struck a gentleman's cane with his left eye, and set down. He objected to going to jail, and illustrated the theory of the inertia of matter by lying down. Then the Constable explained to him new principles of locomotion by tying him and wheeling him in a wheel-barrow. Judge Clark fined him nine dollars yesterday morning, and Mr. J. W. Macbeth rejoices in his newly acquired freedom and knowledge. It is estimated that about four hundred people were on the picnic grounds at Cowan's Grove yesterday. Everything was furnished for the comfort and pleasure of the party. A large dancing floor was prepared, and excellent music was in attendance. Luxuries of all descriptions were in abundance, and a general good time was the result. Freight for the following persons was received at the depot last night: J M Brown, 1 case syrup; T J Grimshaw, 5 pkgs mdse; J B Jabaut, 5 pkgs mdse; Chas Tiebout, 3 pkgs mdse; Cahen & Willard, 1 case mdse; T Shelley, 5 boxes soda; J W Anderson & Co, 1 sack coffee; John Wakesfield, 3 pkgs mdse; A Guy Smith & Co, 2 cars lumber. In our item referring to the opening of the blacksmith shop, on Lemon street, we made a slight error. Mr. McDermott is a blacksmith, and Mr. Grimshaw is a carriage maker and general wood-worker. Both gentlemen are practical mechanics, and cannot fail to give satisfaction to those who favor them with their patronage. LOS ANGELES DIVISION SOUTHERN PACIFIC RAILROAD. AND STEAMERS. Apple Beach Pear Apricot From Tuesday's Daily. Mr. Gulick officiated in the Presbyterian church on Sunday night. Mrs. Dr. Geller died in Los Angeles on Sunday. E. W. Champlin will leave on Friday next for San Francisco. Meyer, proprietor of the Idaho Bakery, will commence the manufacture of ice cream in a day or two. There is a telegram at the office of the Atlantic and Pacific Telegraph Company for A. D. Lassell. The exports from the depot this morning were one box eggs and 33 bales wool. M. Keller, of Los Angeles, has so far shipped 90,000 gallons of wine to Philadelphia. Mr. R. N. White, formerly of Anaheim Landing, was among the arrivals from Los Angeles last evening. The following we clip from the proceedings of the District Court. The suit grew out of the San Joaquin squatting excitement: Irwin, Flint & Co. vs O'Neil et al—Except John Doe O'Neil and complaint amended so as to read Joseph O'Neil in place of John Doe O'Neil. Default of John O'Neil entered and judgment ordered as prayed for in the complaint. The proposition to establish Alden Drying Works in Anaheim is, we learn, regarded favorably by the farmers in this vicinity. The holders of protested warrants against the late lamented city corporation, are about to take steps to compel the payment of the same. Rev. J. M. Allis will leave Anaheim this afternoon for Brooklyn, to attend the session of the Presbyterian General Assembly. The enterprising proprietor of the blacksmith shop at the depot pays his devoirs to the public to-day, in our advertising columns. We have heard many expressions of regret at the announcement of the contemplated departure of Miss La-faucherie. This lady, we learn, will leave for the East next week. Mr. P. Pellegrin is setting out orange trees on six acres of his land, south-west of Dr. Hardin's orchard. In our item referring to the opening of the blacksmith shop, on Lemon street, we made a slight error. Mr. McDermott is a blacksmith, and Mr. Grimshaw is a carriage maker and general wood-worker. Both gentlemen are practical mechanics, and can not fail to give satisfaction to those who favor them with their patronage. We are requested by W. L. Oge, Superintendent of the Union Sunday School, of Orange, to announce that the school will have a picnic on next Saturday, the 6th inst., at the usual place in the Santiago Cañon. By vote of the Orange school, the Sunday Schools of Anaheim are cordially invited to join them at the grove. Report comes to us of another confidence man who has operated in Santa Ana lately. It seems that the gentleman took contracts for building five houses, and purchased lumber from Messrs. McFaulden, Griffith & Lynch and one of the lumber yards at Anaheim When the buildings were fairly under way he demanded money from his employers to pay for the lumber, and having procured quite a large sum, he left for parts unknown. This is the second time within a year that the good people of Santa Ana have been gulled by an adventurer. BORN In Anaheim, April 28th, to the wife of Charles E. French, a daughter. Send it East.
