The Record has the following as an incident of election day in Sacramento: Several candidates were directly approached by a piece club. It appears that a club of twenty-three persons was formed some weeks ago, entitled "The Young men's Political Club." Posters were put up about the city announcing that the club would give a grand ball the night before the election, at Central Hall, and that all orders for "tickets" must be sent accompanied by postal money order to the Secretary. The day before the election and yesterday persons believed to be members of this club, approached candidates and wished them to buy packages of tickets for the ball. The following is a sample conversation between one of the candidates and a tall, salmon-colored, blonde-haired youth representing the club: "Will you buy $5 worth of tickets for our club ball?" "What club is it?" "A Political Club." "What party does it represent?" "Oh; no party!" "Who do you go for?" "For those who help us?" "Ah! you help those who help you?" "Exactly." "But, suppose I don't buy?" "Then we won't go for you." Resolutions of Respect:—New Bank. SAN FRANCISCO, Sept. 7. In the Board of Supervisors last evening, the following preamble and resolutions were presented. Their adoption was moved by Supervisor Ebbits and seconded by Supervisor MacDonald. They were unanimously to the indictment found against him in San Benito County for assault with intent to commit murder on the person of Joel Hawkins, was sentenced by Judge Breen to fourteen years' imprisonment in San Quentin. The Coroner's jury on the Raiston case found that the death was accidental. The chemist, who made an analysis of the stomach, found no trace of poison. Governor Pacheco has offered a reward of $500 for the arrest and conviction of the murderers of Mr. Barland, who was recently murdered at Peach Tree in San Benito County, and the citizens of the Pajaro Valley offer $1,500 in addition. Thomas Cureton, of Mendocino County, killed on the 15th inst., a grizzly bear which had been making sad havoc with a drove of hogs. The bear welched 900 pounds and his claws measured four inches in length. He was caught on Alder Creek. Mr. Turner, an old citizen of Gilroy, was seriously poisoned with the virus from a dead bullock, while skinning it. It appeared in both arms and then passed to his breast. Fears that the result would be fatal were apprehended for a time. The hop-picking season has been commenced by the farmers of Mendocino county. Mr. McClure has ninety Indians at work; Bartlett's jailty; Mr. Burk one hundred; Pina twenty; and L. F. Long, of Hopland, working a mixed crew of Indians and Chimamen. The court of inquiry on the Bremen case has handed in its report. They find the disease to have commenced through an insultible supply of vegetables and ensure the Captain for not having put into Honolulu. The Visalia Delta of Thursday says: "We have been informed by farmers in this vicinity that the birds and squirrels together, in some cases, have destroyed nearly the whole of their fruit crops. Large doses of poison and healthy applications of powder and shot seem to decrease their numbers very little, as no perceptible diminution in their number is apparent." Abraham Clark, of Berryessa, who last year put in 4,000 acres of leased ground to wheat, in Colusa county has sold from that and his Berryessa ranch this year,$62,000 worth of wheat, making a remittance to Napa lately of$30,000 in one check. "Yes we will; we goes for 'em as helps us." "I see; now look here, young man, don't you know you are liable to be sent to prison for this kind of thing?" "I guess not." "I guess yes; here, I'll show you the law." The ticket seller didn't wait to see the law but vanished. Almost the same scene transpired at the office of a prominent lawyer, a candidate for a judicial office, and similar conversations were had with other candidates. One candidate said to the solicitor: "We'll like young men, but I've heard of a club of fellows meeting down at H——'s office, who I am told are just organized to sell out, and the whole lot can be bought cheap I hope—you—" "Oh, we meet down there." "Then you git out of this quick." The candidate proceeded to the Chief of Police, stated what had taken place, and we learn that steps are to be taken to punish the ringleaders of the "piece club," for attempting extortion. The names are known, and several of the candidates swear they will make "awful examples" of them for the benefit of future generations. A call is published for a meeting of grape-growers at S. Lachman & Co's winery, at Sacramento, next Saturday, at 12 M., for the purpose of exchanging views relative to the coming vintage. One day last week the skeleton of a man was found, in Nelson Creek, and it is supposed that the deceased was George A. Snyder, who was lost in 1873 or 1874, between Onion Valley and Eureka. Resolutions of Respect:—New Bank. SAN FRANCISCO, Sept. 7. In the Board of Supervisors last evening, the following preamble and resolutions were presented. Their adoption was moved by Supervisor Ebbits and seconded by Supervisor MacDonald. They were unanimously adopted. WHEREAS, It has pleased the Almighty and benificient Ruler of the Universe in his unserutable wisdom to remove from his earthly business and responsibility William C. Ralston, a prominent banker of this city, especially noted for his personal worth and virtues, distinguished for his broad and liberal views, his enterprise and assiduity in coming to the relief of all in distress, and beloved for his unostentatious charity, and for his many estimable qualities; therefore be it Resolved, That in the loss of William C. Ralston, called away suddenly in all the fullness of his power, the city has lost a noble and public spirited man, and a citizen whose energies and abilities have accomplished much to advance the general prosperity of the city and State, and whose generous self-sacrifice acts, in spite of his misfortune, has endeared his memory to all classes in our midst. Resolved, That the members of this Board respectfully extend their heartfelt sympathy to the family of the deceased, and as a tribute of respect a copy of these resolutions be transmitted to the family of the deceased, and the same be entered on the minutes of the Board. The work on the Bank of Nevada building is making rapid progress, and probably in ten days the institution will be open for business, attording once more a central point for brokers, checks and accounts. At Rome, Georgia, recently, four young lawyers, who had just passed an examination, were addressed as follows by Judge Underwood: "Young gentlemen, I want to say a thing or two to you. You have passed as good an examination as usual, perhaps better; but you don't know anything. Like those young fellows just back from their graduating college, you think you know a great deal. That is a great mistake. If you ever get to be of any account, you will be surprised at your present ignorance. Don't be too big for your brecaches. Go round to the Justices' Court. Try to learn something. Don't be afraid. Set off upon a high key. You will, no doubt, speak a great deal of nonsense, but you will have one consolation—nobody will know it. The great mass of mankind take squand for sense. Never mind about your case—pitch in." Anaheim Lodge No. 199, I.O. O.F. An examination is usual, perhaps better; but you don't know anything. Like those young fellows just back from their graduating college, you think you know a great deal. That is a great mistake. If you ever get to be of any account, you will be surprised at your present ignorance. Don't be too big for your breaches. Go round to the Justices' Court. Try to learn something. Don't be afraid. Set off upon a high key. You will, no doubt, speak a great deal of nonsense, but you will have one consolation—nobody will know it. The great mass of mankind take squandr for sense. Never mind about your ease—pitch in. You are about as apt to win as lose. Don't be ashamed of the wise looking justice. He don't know a thing. He is a dead beat on knowledge. Stand to your rack, fodder or no fodder, and you will see daylight after a while. The community generally suppose that you will be rascals. There is no absolute necessity that you should. You may be smart without being tricky. Lawyers ought to be gentlemen. Some of them don't come up to the standard, and are a disgrace to the fraternity. They know more than any other race generally, and not much in particular. They don't know anything about sandstones, carboniferous periods and ancient land animals known as fossils. Men that make out they know a great deal on these subjects don't know much. They are humbugs—superb humbugs. They are ancient land animals themselves, and will ultimately be fossils. You are dismissed, with the sincere hope of the Court that you will not make asses of yourselves." Mall Service. WASHINGTON, Sept. 6.
