Annual allowance of Queen Victoria is £285,000, or $4,025,-600, "for the support of Her Majesty's household and of the honor and dignity of the crown of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Ireland." Besides this, the Queen has also paid to her the revenue of the Duchy of Lancaster, which amounted last year to £12,000 net, or $200,000 more. But this prodigious allowance to the Queen who represents the head of the State, in no means all. That expensive young man, the Prince of Wales, draws an annuity from the British people of £40,000 per annum in his own right, and £10,000 in the name of the Princess, his wife, making $250,000 a year, which he condescends to accept for keeping up the honor and dignity of the helr apparent of the crown. In addition to this, the Prince has, as an income, the revenue of Cornwall, which amounted last year to £62,515, or over $300,000. Even this more than half a million of money per annum, it appears, is not enough for the expensive habits of purchasing Prince, who has contrived to run in debt, after the example of George the Fourth, to the extent of several hundreds of thousands of pounds, the scandal of which, with a threatened appeal to Parliament for special appropriations to pay it, has long occupied the British mind. The other annuities to members of Queen Victoria's family, who has nine children, are as follows: Prince Alfred (Duke of Edinburgh, second son.) £25-000; Prince Arthur (Duke of Connaught, third son.) £15,000; Prince Leopold fourth son, £15,000; Princess Bessie fourth son, £8,000; Princess Alice of Hesse. We might apply the same question to mature persons, with the same answer—No. We know that sickly men have produced great results, literary gems, and almost marvels of mental performance. But it may be doubted if such productions can be considered as establishing an affirmative. Children at school, as a general proposition, do not do well—do not make a good, progressive record—unless they enjoy good health. Of course, there are exceptions—exceptions among men and women, as in the case of Pope and Mrs. Barrett Browning—and occasionally among school children. But with the latter—the sickly child that stands high in scholarship—the fact is as a hectic flush on the cheek of the consumptive. It is rather the effect of a paroxysm than of healthy action—exceptional, and by no means desirable. A lady teacher of much experience recently read a paper upon this subject before the American Institute of Instruction, in which she expresses her belief that the reason why so many children in private schools are the subjects of ill health, and necessarily fall in their studies more or less, may be found in the false home living—as the New York Tribune expresses—in insufficient clothing or sleep, in rich or poorly cooked food, and in wrong mental habits. This lady, Miss Anna C. Brackett, consequently feels that the complaints of parents and others about the teachers, and accusations that the child's backwardness is the result of improper teaching, are unjust, especially as often the pupil's want of health is charged to the teacher. There is no doubt that parents often err in this, and, as Miss Brackett says, instead of repairing the waste, take the child from school. Probably the A PROPHETIC TOODLES. We cannot add anything to this table sentiment from the Louisville Courier-Journal: "When the soldiers of the two armies can greet each other at the graves of their comrades, surely it is time for the partisan to lay aside his animosities and to make politics as liberal as commerce and science and all the various enterprises that have refused to see any differences among our people."
