FUL HOME, d Bargain, GE ROVE rs Old! SHATTERED IDOLS. If all the attentive readers of the newspapers do not soon grow to be cynics, it will not be for lack of having all the old time theories and stories of their earlier years proven to be myths. There's nothing real any more. Everything has been proven a myth that has come 'neath the cynical microscopes of the iconoclasts. There are grave doubts in the minds of many about that nautical trip of Jonah's in company with a whale, which doubts will sooner or later be held by all. Then Tell never shot the apple off his son's head, any more than Gesler had his hat stuck up on a pole for the people to bow to. Abelard and Heloise are not buried in the tomb said to be 'theirs', and the time is not far distant when some scholar will tell you that such a couple never existed, and what is more, he will prove it too. Columbus never discovered America, no more did the Northmen, for Hans Breitman proves in a recent book of his that it was done by a heathen Chinee with an unpronounceable name. William Penn never made a treaty with the Indians under that spreading oak tree, and the picture of the mild mannered Quaker, with one hand full of glass beads and the other running over with breastpins from the dollar store, which all of us have seen in our histories, is a delusion and a snare. But THE CONGRESSIONAL DISTRICTS. As a matter of general public interest and of useful reference, we give the political divisions which constitute the four Congressional Districts of California. I. The City and County of San Francisco. II. The Counties of Alameda, Alpine, Amador, Calaveras, Contra Costa, El Dorado, Nevada, Placer, Sacramento, San Joaquin and Tuolumne. III. The Counties of Butte, Golan, Del Norte, Humboldt, Lake, Loma, Marin, Mendocino, Modoc, Napa, Plumas, Shasta, Sierra, Slakiyou, Solano, Sonoma, Sutter, Tehama, Trinity, Yolo and Yuba. IV. The Counties of Fresno, Inyo, Kern, Los Angeles, Mariposa, Merced, Mono, Monterey, San Benito, San Bernardino, San Diego, San Luis Obispo, San Mateo, Santa Barbara, Santa Clara, Santa Cruz, Stanislawa, Tulare and Ventura. PROPORTION OF THE SEXES. Only the United States, Belgium and Italy have more men than women. This is attributed to the wear and tear of hard work, which kills off so many of the fair sex of these countries. According to the census of Dec. 31, 1871, Italy had a population of 26,801,154, yielding a percentage of 50.27%. BIJAH REPROVED. [From the Detroit Free Press,] "Bijah, were you brought up among heathens?" sharply inquired His Honor. The Court had cut a hole in a lemon and was slowly sucking the juice, while the Clerk was getting the warrants ready. Bijah had been watching him for two or three minutes, licking his chops and wearing a hungry expression. "I guess I was—I was born in New Jersey!" replied the old janitor. This being His Honor's native State, he laid the lemon on the desk, propped it from rolling off with his pen-holder, and remarked: "Mr. Joy, you are getting old and sassy. It grieves me to see it, but I realize that it is so. You have got to turn over a new leaf, or the silken cord of friendship which has so long united us shall be severed." "Is there any harm to see a feller suck a lemon?" exclaimed Bijah. "Mr. Joy, this world is full of harm. This very lemon, plump and fair as it appears to the eye, may cause my death within an hour. You may now open court and call out the prisoners, and I hope the words I have spoken may make a deep impression on your heart. If you ever have a monument, the funds will come from my wallet, and I shall not care to remember anything but your good deeds and your big feet. Bring out the vicious and the unfortunate, and let the cotillion commence." HOW MARBLES ARE MADE. The chief place of the manufacture of marbles—those little pieces of stone which contribute so largely to the enjoyment of boys—is at Oberstein, on the Nake in Germany. Only the United States, Belgium and Italy have more men than women. This is attributed to the wear and tear of hard work, which kills off so many of the fair sex of these countries. According to the census of Dec. 31, 1871, Italy had a population of 29,801,154, yielding a percentage of 50.27 men and 49.78 women, 58 per cent. of old maids and bachelors, 30 per cent. of married couples, and 6 per cent. of the widowed, of whom the widows more than double the widowers. In France there is relatively the smallest number of births though old persons are there preserved longer than in other countries, 22 per cent. of its inhabitants being over fifty years, and seven per cent. upwards of eighty. In the United States there are only 11 per cent. upward of fifty, while the young of both sexes only, reaching 20, constitute 60 percent of the population. The export of old hats is a new branch of industry. The inhabitants of the Nicobar Islands, a group in the Indian Ocean, south of the Andamans, have an extraordinary fancy for such cast-off head-gear, and a regular trade is carried on between Calcutta and Nicobar, the much-desired head-piece being paid for in coconututs. A tall chimney-pot is the favorite kind among the Nicobarians, and the scene of fashion is considered to be a high white hat, with a black hat-band. This is worth from fifty to sixty coconuts, and is worn by the Nicobarian dandy when he goes out fishing—the rest of his attire consisting solely of a waist-cloth. Mrs. Belle Lynch of the Mendocino Dispatch, strikes her contemporary below the belt thusly: "The editor of the Mendocino Democrat is highly pleased at the withdrawal of Laura De Force Gordon from the editorial department of the Stockton Leader, and says that Mrs. G. certainly exhibits commendable taste." Now, we would suggest, if only men are to fight the battle of this campaign, the editor of the Democrat had better put on a checked apron, get him a bank of yarn and some knitting needles, and a pair of brass mounted spectacles, and retire from the stormy conflict." The wife of the late Professor Agassiz rose one morning and proceeded according to custom, to put on her stockings and shoes. At a certain stage of this process a little scream attracted Mr. Agassiz's attention, and not having yet risen, he leaned anxiously on his elbow, inquiring what was the matter. "Why, Professor, a little snake has just crawled out of my boot," said she. "Only one, my dear?" returned HOW MARBLES ARE MADE. The chief place of the manufacture of marbles—those little pieces of stone which contribute so largely to the enjoyment of boys—is at Oberstein, on the Nahe, in Germany, where there are large agate mills and quarries, the refuse of which is turned to good paying account by being made into small balls, employed by experts to knuckle with, and are mostly sent to the American market. The substance used in Saxony is a hard, calcareous stone, which is first broken into blocks, nearly square, by blows with a hammer. These are thrown by the hundred or two in a small sort of mill, which is formed of a flat, stationary slab of stone, with a number of eccentric furrows upon its face. A block of oak or other hard wood, of the diametric size, is placed over the stones and partly resting upon them. The small block of wood is kept revolving while water flows upon the stone slab. In about fifteen minutes the stones are turned into spheres, and then, being fit for sale, henceforth called marbles. One establishment with but three mills turns out sixty thousand marbles each week. PANAMA, July 18. Advices from San Salvador report a dreadful riot at San Miguel, a town of 50,000 inhabitants in the southern part of the republic. The Government had refused to allow the pastoral of the Bishop of San Salvador, which was strongly hostile to the law, to be read in the churches. The Priests stirred up the people against the authorities. The mob assaulted the garrison and killed Generals Espinosa and Castro. The marines from H. B. Majesty's ship Fantome, with the troops collected, marched to San Miguel and put down the mob. The President, Gonzales, arrived and shot many of the rioters. The damage to the town by fire and pillage is estimated at one million dollars. There is great excitement and indignation against the Priests. The wife of the late Professor Agassiz rose one morning and proceeded according to custom, to put on her stockings and shoes. At a certain stage of this process a little scream attracted Mr. Agassiz's attention, and not having yet risen, he leaned anxiously on his elbow, inquiring what was the matter. "Why, Professor, a little snake has just crawled out of my boot," said she. "Only one, my dear?" returned the Professor calmly lying down again "there should have been three." He had put them there to keep them warm. A little five-year-old boy was being instructed in morals by his grandmother. The old lady told him that such terms as "by golly," "by jingo," "by thunder," etc., were only little oaths, and but little better than other profanity. In fact, she said, he could tell a profane oath by the prefix "by." All such were oaths. "Well, then, grandmother," said the little hopeful, "is 'by telegraph,' which I see in the newspapers, swearing?" "No," said the old lady, "that's only lying." The apple race at the celebration in Wheatland, Yuba county, is a new and rather trying race. One hundred apples one yard apart, to be picked up separately and deposited in a box at the starting point. A person has to run five miles and thirteen hundred yards, turning two hundred times, and stooping over two hundred times in picking up and depositing the apples in the box. There were six entries but only four that finished. The winner was a boy thirteen years living in the foot hills. Time, 59 minutes. The port of London has every day on its waters 1,000 ships and 9,000 sailors. Upwards of 120 persons are added to the population daily, as 40,000 yearly; a birth taking place every five minutes. On an average 28 miles of street are opened, and 9,000 new houses built every year. In its postal districts there is a yearly delivery of 248,000,000 of letters. On the police register there are the names of 120,000 habitual criminals, increasing by many thousands every year.
