As it is issued from the office of the Evening Express, it is very neat, typographically, and is replete with reading matter the reverse of dull. And as a verification of the old adage that "the longer a man lives the more he learns," we find the editor will not make an issue of County Division. In this he acts wisely and with discretion. The people are tired of hearing the subject mentioned. Judge S. J. Davis is the Anaheim agent for the Broad-Aze. Among the political news items of the week, we have heard Mr. Robt. Furlong spoken of as a candidate for County Superintendent of Public Schools. The nomination would be a good one. Mr. Furlong is a gentleman of fine abilities, whose integrity is unquestioned. As a teacher he is ranked among the best in the county, is quite popular among the members of his profession, and from many years experience in the public schools is well qualified for the position. On Friday of last week the Chinamen, employed on the Cajon ditch, became unruly and refused to obey the orders of the Superintendent, and on being remonstrated with, threatened personal violence. The annual meeting of the stockholders of the Bolsa Chica Wharf Company will be held to-day at Enterprise Hall. The importance of the business to be transacted necessitates a large attendance. For the Guernse. SOMETHING FOR THE GIRLS.—No. 2. MENTAL TRAINING. Besides being good housekeepers and having healthy bodies, it is quite important that the young woman should possess properly and wisely developed mental facilities, and should secure as large a range as possible of general information or knowledge. In order to a wise selection and use of means to secure so excellent a result, it is essential that right ideas should exist at the start. Unless true views control one's actions, it will be impossible to select the right course of training, or make proper use of whatever plans are adopted. Knowledge and education are not the same, though these terms are by many used interchangeably. Knowledge refers to the amount of facts one has in his possession, while education refers to the attainment of skill by which one is able to freely use the faculties or powers of the mind. Studies are divided into two classes—one of which supplies facts, and the other provides mental training and stimuli. To learn a spelling lesson is to supply one's self with facts; so is the study of geography, or of chemistry, or history. Yet the committing to memory of the facts of these studies, or rather the right study of these subjects, will also develop the powers of the mind, and will provide a certain stimulus, urging to greater efforts. The study of arithmetic, algebra, geometry, or, in a single word, of mathematics, the study of languages, of literature, of logic, rhetoric and of composition, and similar subjects, will act more directly upon the mental powers, securing facility and strength of thought, adding originality and breadth. The difference between knowledge and education may be illustrated by any of the trades. For example, take a carpenter. He has, we will say, a good kit of tools, aid an excellent work bench in a commodious shop; but this will not make him a good carpenter. He must next have material—boards, planks, joists, mouldings, etc. Yet to fill his shop with these things this plan will demand greater devotion, labor and patience. Let no one suppose because a school course or a privately arranged course of study has been passed through, that nothing else is to be done. The true appetite for knowledge and for mental proficiency is never satisfied, and nothing can stop the onward progress. Those girls who thought that when they left a boarding school with a diploma in their trunk that they had nothing more to do, made one of the most unfortunate mistakes. Their work had then only begun, for they had only learned in part something of the tools they were to use in their life work of getting an education, and in using their acquirements for the human good. My space is already more than full, so the relation of education and health to the problem of getting a living, and to the experiment of marriage, must be deferred. The writer hopes that the young men will peruse this article carefully, for the ideas here advanced apply to them with equal force as to the young women, and will be referred to in subsequent letters, when something for the special consideration of young men will be presented. That the noble ambition of making the most of one's self may be the controlling sentiment of both young man and maiden, is the ardent wish of PRO BONO PUBLICO. A very good opportunity to procure fine business or residence lots is now offered by John Fischer, administrator of the Kuchel estate. Bids can be sent in at any time after to-day. Al. Sole Agents for JOHN DEERE'S IMPROVED GANG PLOW (In every respect ahead of all others.) JOHN DEERE'S Moline Plow, Better every way than any other plow. Soo that you get the Genuine. John Deere's Shovel Plows, --- of literature, of logic, rhetoric and of composition, and similar subjects, will act more directly upon the mental powers, securing facility and strength of thought, adding originality and breadth. Yet to fill his shop with these things does not make a carpenter of him. He must learn how to use his tools and how to form his lumber into doors, windows, houses and churches, or anything else his customers may want made. Not only must he learn how to saw straight and plane smoothly, but he must know how to plan his work so as to make his box, his house or church so that it will be strong and complete. In other words, he must learn how to use his tools, as well as possess them and a stock of lumber. The tools are like the mental faculties; the lumber is like the knowledge we obtain. The use of the tools upon the lumber is like the use of the mind upon the facts we learn. Many object to a college education, or to any extensive course of study, because they seriously think that one can get all the knowledge they need while in the midst of activity; and also because they have been disappointed in so many, who did go through a long course of study, but who did not learn to know more than others who had been engaged in manual labor all the time. A college course provides but few facts or but little knowledge, compared with the training it gives to the mental powers. It is a place where one's mental tools are brought to a fine edge, and where one is taught how to use them. So, girls consider yourselves quite as high and as capable as the boys, and determine to train the powers of mind you possess equal with your brothers, and become not only learned but educated. In many of our girl's schools, studies are divided into practical and ornamental branches. We never hear of boys taking up ornamental studies. This arrangement of studies arises from a false pride in parents, and more especially in the mothers of our girls, and also in the girls themselves. Unfortunately for a broad and solid development of the feminine portion of the community, there has been an ambition in their dear hearts to be entertaining; and too often those they have sought to entertain possessed such feeble powers of appreciation that the main effort has been to obtain smatterings of music, painting or drawing, and poetry. On suitable occasions, the young Miss is sent to the plano, and there drums and squalls a few pieces of music which she has practiced over and over again for the last year or so of her school life; or her portfolio is brought out and her exquisite sketches are exhibited; or the attention is called to something hanging in a frame on the wall. The proud mamma exclaims, "my daughter did that." The Al Smith is now established in the building formerly occupied by the Water Company, and is prepared to make pictures in the latest styles, and from a locket to a life size. Do not despair because your physician shakes his head. Professional opinions are not infallible; and they are never wilder of the mark than when they pronounce chronic Dyspepsia an incurable malady. To mitigate its pungle, the faculty usually prescribe air, exercise and brandy. The first two are God's medicines; the last is a Satanic poison. The only medicine needed in Dyspepsia and its concomitants is Dr. J. Walker's California Vinegar Bitters, the great vegetable tonic of the age. Auction Sale.
