Present—Walges Woodworth, Chairman; A. W. Hutton, Secretary; E. K. Hewitt, E. Pallareno, C. Agullar, A. W. Ryan, F. Palomares. Upon motion of E. E. Hewitt, it was resolved that eleven delegates to the State and Congressional Conventions be appointed by the Committee, and that the Delegates to the said Conventions shall not have the power to confer their proxies upon any person other than their associate Delegates. Resolved, That the following named persons be appointed delegates to the State and District Congressional Conventions: F. A. Sanchez, F. Sahlich, A. J. Coronel, Geo. Hinda, J. W. Venable, A. Langenberger, J. G. Downey, J. M. Bassett, Frank Ganahl, T. D. Mott and Asa Ellis. On motion of A. W. Ryan, it was resolved that the same plan pursued for the last four years be adopted, and that the candidates receiving a plurality of votes at the primary elections, be declared the candidates of the Democratic party for Los Angeles county. Resolved, That the primary elections be held at the several polling places named, on Saturday, the 17th of July, 1875. Resolved, That the test recommend: ALMOND CULTURE IN ORANGE A correspondent of the Herald, writing from Orange says: "The gravel lands to the north and north-east of the town proper seem to have the choice of settlers at present. These lands are unsurpassed in the production of fruit and a fine quality of grapes. They are not quite so easy to work as a pure loam, but their cultivation is so commanding and their fertility great that this slight objection is not allowed to hinder their development in the alghitic degree. It is on this land that the orchard of Mr. Messenger is situated. This is perhaps, the largest orchard of its age in the State, containing forty acres of trees, four years old." The almond orchards now present a very beautiful appearance. The cultivation of the almond has received a great deal of attention here, and promises the richest rewards. Captain Glennell now values his ten sons, partly with almonds, at four thousand dollars, and says he will sell it for that much in a short time. Other almond orchards worthy of special mention are those of Mr. Huntington, Mr. Lockwood, and Mr. Charles T. Hawkins. These gentlemen all display the greatest taste and judgment in the management of their orchards, and will serve the beautiful homes they have growing around them. PROFESSOR CARR. THE INDEPENDENT COMMITTEE. The above named Committee met on Saturday, pursuant to adjournment. The following members were present: N. P. Riohardson, J. S. Smith, J. E. McComas, J. T. Gordon, W. R. Olden, E. Evey and J. S. Thompson. Absent, Jotham Bixby. On motion of J. T. Gordon, the following gentlemen were placed in nomination as delegates to the State Convention: J. S. Garvin, Geo. C. Gibbs, Thomas Hayes, J. S. Thompson, P. C. Tonner, S. H. Waldron, J. E. Fulton, and Antonio F. Coronek. On motion of W. R. Olden, the above-named gentlemen were declared unanimously elected. On motion of J. S. Thompson, the above gentlemen were also appointed as delegates to the District Congressional Convention. On motion of J. S. Thompson, it was unanimously resolved that the delegates may attend these Conventions shall cast the entire vote of the county. Judge J. S. Thompson was elected Secretary of the Committee, and instructed to furnish each delegate with credentials. The committee adjourned to meet at 10 o'clock, A.M., July, 1st, 1875, at the office of the Chairman. HOPS. We are in receipt of the following letter from the Pioneer Hop Grower of Southern California, under date May 24th. "Good hop growing lands can be bought in this county (Los Angeles) at from $30 to $50 gold, per acre. Willow poles cut and piled up, convenient for hauling, from one to three miles of the lands, can be had for $3 per hundred. The month of March is the most favorable time for setting roots in this section. If the roots are of good quality, 800 lbs of hope to the acre can be raised the first year, and from 1,800 to 2,200 lbs thereafter." PROFESSOR CARR. In mentioning Professor Carr's name in connection with the Governorship, we have given expression to the prevailing sentiment in this county: Without much reference in paris, the people will sustain him. His attainments as a scholar and a scientist, his thorough knowledge of the wants of the State, and his character as an individual, are qualifications sufficient found in one person. He would have enemies bitter and malignant but they could find nothing to urge against him. He is most emphatically a people's man, and has spent the greater part of his life as a quiet toller for the advancement of public interests—that of education. Let his name now go before the public, and there would be the greatest enthusiasm in his behalf among one end of the State to the other—Oakland Gazette. Garibaldi is occupied, among other schemes, in planting the famous *Acalyptus globulus* (Australian gum tree) around Rome, with a view in prevent malaria. Travelers in the south of Europe have now an opportunity of admiring noble specimens of this tree in the promenades and public gardens of Nice, Cannes, Hyeres and Algiers; while in Spain its health giving properties are well known and appreciated. In 1860 the acalyptus was first introduced in Spain on account of its hygienic virtues, and there were so soon discovered by the poor people of Valencia that they used to steal the leaves for the purpose of making decoctions. The Cap of Good Hope, Comica, Stella, California and Cuba have also their plantations. Already efforts are being made to introduce the tree into Ceylon an antidote to jungle fever. Unfortunately, it is too delicate to stand English springs—Pall Mall Gazette. The Grand Duke Nicholas Nicholai rvitch, Inspector General of Russian cavalry, has determined, with the sanction of the Emperor of Russia, to offer for the three best essays on the subject of the history of cavalry, three prizes of 5,000, 3,000 and 2,000 roubles respectively. In order to encourage international scientific intercourse, he has decided to throw the competition open to all aristocrats, but foreign competitors will have to get their productions translated into Russian. All "Good hop growing lands can be bought in this county (Los Angeles) at from $30 to $50 gold, per acre. Willow poles cut and piled up, convenient for hauling, from one to three miles of the lands, can be had for $3 per hundred. The month of March is the most favorable time for setting roots in this section. If the roots are of good quality, 800 lbs of hope to the acre can be raised the first year, and from 1,800 to 2,200 lbs thereafter. Our acreage this year has been increased 22 acres, making 37 acres now under cultivation in this county. At this time our hops have about all taken the poles and promise well, and as we have never had here any enemy to the hop plant, we can now calculate on having a fine crop the present season. My crop last year yielded 2,200 lbs to the acre, the cost of which laid down in San Francisco, was from 12¢ to 15¢ per lb. For the securing of our crops we have chiefly employed coolie labor, with wages ranging from $1 00 to $1 25 per day. There is nothing whatever to embarrass the cultivation of hops here, but the fluctuation in prices, and the average favora the grower. Lands above mentioned can be secured upon the payment of 15 percent of the purchase money down and the balance on three years' time at a moderate rate of interest—Littlefield, Webb & Co.'s Circular. Talking of spelling and writing, the New York Herald says: Bad writing is productive of cursing, and who can tell how much Horace Groelay, Rufus Chaste, and Colonel Forney, public man with extensive correspondence, have done to make swearing a natural vice. Every letter these great statesmen wrote went forth as an evil one to promote profanity. Our Forney, on the occasion of one of Mr. Chaste's great speeches, wrote him a complimentary letter, in which he said, in his poetic way, "You sum an heathen heaven in ghastly and top high enwined Olympus." Mr. Chaste read the sentence thus: "You mean an heathen in heaven, you wretch, at top a fly brown number," and in a tit of anger wrote a most absurd reply, which Col. Forney still keeps in his album as a peculiar invitation to dinner." The Grand Duke Nicholas Nicholai alrvitch, Inspector General of Russian Cavalry, has determined, with the sanction of the Emperor of Russia, to offer for the three best essays on the subject of the history of cavalry, three prizes of 5,000, 3,000 and 2,000 roubles respectively. In order to encourage international scientific intercourse, he has decided to throw the competition open to all aristics, but foreign competitors will have to get their productions translated into Russian. All competing essays must be handed in at St. Petersburg on or before the 1st (13th) of January, 1877, when they will be carefully examined by a committee nominated by His Imperial Highness, and the prizes adjudged. Below we give a statement of what is in nearly all localities regarded as a car-load of transportation: As a general rule, 20,000 pounds or 70 barrels of salt, lime, or flour, 60 of whiskey, 200 sacks of flour, six cords of hard wood seven of soft wood, 18 to 20 head of cattle, 50 to 60 head of hogs, 60 to 100 head of sheep, 9,000 feet of solid boards, 17,000 feet of silting; 12,000 feet of bending; 40,000 shingles; one-half lane of hard lumber; one-fourth lane of group lumber; one-tenth lane of joins; mandlings and all other large timber; 440 bushels of wheat; 360 of corn; 680 of oats; 400 of barley; 360 of flax seed; 880 of apples; 430 of Irish potatoes; 815 of sweet potatoes; 1,000 of bran. The Gannon Appeal of June 24 says: The Gannon Mint is ahead of all offices in the production of the new twenty-cent piece. At 4:15 yesterday afternoon the first place was struck off. Only two of those pieces were counted. The first of them is to be presented to Senator Jones—the author of the twenty-cent piece law. Hon. James W. Crawford, the Superintendent, who returned from his California trip yesterday showed us the coins. They look like a diminutive quarter. Awkwardness continued with back, as what helped a Salmon Hummers may get out of the way of his wife whom she had the rolling-pin wound around to stoke. He fell through a safety door, and only broke his collar hope.
