NO. 32
THE MISSION OF THE FLY.
Why are flies? has been a perpetual query with housekeepers and persons who would take noon-day naps in hot weather. The question has been answered by Mr. Emerson, an English chemist, whose experiments are recorded in the Scientific American. In the light of the revelations of that gentleman's investigations, the fly assumes the position of an important friend, instead of a pest, to mankind.
Did you ever watch a fly who has just alighted after soaring about the room for some little time? He goes through a series of operations which reminds you of a cat licking herself after a meal, or of a bird plumming its feathers. First, the hind feet are rubbed together, then each hind leg is passed over a wing, then the fore legs undergo a like treatment; and lastly, if you look sharp, you will see the insect carry his proboscis over his legs and about his body as far as he can reach. The minute trunk is perfectly retractible, and it terminates in two large lobes, which you can see spread out when the insect begins a meal on a lump of sugar. Now, the rubbing together of legs and wings may be a smoothing operation; but for what purpose is this carefully going over the body with the trunk, especially when that organ is not fitted for licking, but dimpled for grinding and sucking up?
METHODIST DISTRICT CONFERENCE
The District Conference of the Methodist Episcopal Church for Los Angeles District closed its labors on Thursday night last. The Conference was composed of the following members: Rev. J. R. Tansey, Presiding Elder; Florence; Rev. Messrs. Stephen Bowers, James Corwin, Santa Barbara; G. S. Hilekey, San Diego; T. D. Lawrence, Santa Maria; M. M. Bovard, Compton; C. W. Tarr, San Bernardino; W. A. Knighten, Ventura; I. M. Lehky, Las Nietos; Adam Brandt, Orange; Mr. Vineyard, Hupeense; R. F. Bank, Compton, and Harrier and J. W. Gillette, local preachers. A favorable report of the condition of the condition throughout the District was presented. The Conference, on motion, resolved that the next Annual Conference of this State be requested to set off the southern portion of the State as a separate conference, making a line running along the southern boundary of Monterey county, and thereby to the eastern boundary of the State, the dividing line. (At the last General Conference of the M.E. Church held in 1872, authority was given in the Annual Conference of this State to make such division, if deemed advisable.) During the session of the Conference the Committee on Education made the following report:
Your Committee would respectfully recommend the adoption of this followi
passed over a wing, then the fore legs undergo a like treatment; and lastly, if you look sharp, you will see the insect carry his proboscis over his legs and about his body as far as he can reach. The minute trunk is perfectly retractible, and it terminates in two large lobes, which you can see spread out when the insect begins a meal on a lump of sugar. Now, the rubbing together of legs and wings may be smoothing operation; but for what purpose is this carefully going over the body with the trunk, especially when that organ is not fitted for licking, but simply for grasping and sucking up food?
Mr. Emerson states that he begun his self-appointed task of finding out whether the house-fly really serves any appreciable purpose in the scheme of creation, excepting as an indifferent scavenger, by capturing a fine specimen and gluing his wings down to a microscope slide. On placing the slide under the instrument, to the investigator's disgust, the fly appeared covered with lice, causing the offending insect to be promptly released, and another substituted in his place. Fly No. 2 was no better off than fly No. 1, and as the same might be predicted of files 3, 4, 5, (or of n files, as the algebras have it), Mr. Emerson concluded that here was something which at once required looking into. Why were the files lousy? Meanwhile fly No. 2, on the slide, seemed to take his position very coolly, and, extending his proboscis, began to sweep it over his body as if he had just alighted. A glance through the microscope, however, showed that the operation was not one of self-beautification, for wherever the lice were there the trunk went. The lice were disappearing into the trunk; the fly was eating them.
He took the paper into the kitchen and waved it around, taking care that no files touched it, went back to the microscope, and there found animalcules, the same as on flies. He had now arrived at something definite; the animalcules were floating in the air, and the quick motions of the flies gathered them on their bodies, and the flies then went into some quiet corner to have their dainty meal.
The investigator goes on to describe how he continued the experiment in a variety of localities, and how, in dirty and bad-smelling quarters, he found the materials of flies which existed there literally covered with animalcules, while other flies, captured in bed-rooms or well-ventilated, clean apartments, were miserably lean and entirely free from their prey. Wherever fifth existed, evolving germs which may generate disease, there were the flies, covering themselves with the minute organisms and greedily devouring the same.
THE HAWAIIAN ISLANDS.
In view of the favorable action of the United States Senate on the Hawaiian Reciprocity Treaty, public attention is more than usually directed to the commerce and resources of the Islands. The Hawaiian Kingdom is made up of twelve islands, containing separate conference, making a line running along the southern boundary of Monterey county, and thence to the eastern boundary of the State, the dividing line. (At the last General Conference of the M.E. Church, held in 1872, authority was given to the Annual Conference of this State to make such division, if deemed advisable.)
During the session of the Conference the Committee on Education made the following report:
Your Committee would respectfully recommend the adoption of this following:
Whereas, The division of the California Annual Conference is contemplated by forming a Southern California Conference; and
Whereas, The Christian Education of the youth always has been a subject of the greatest importance, second only to their conversion, both to the ministry and membership of our church; and
Whereas, The great increase of the population in Southern California, in connection with the rapid development of the material resources of this part of the State, and our great distance from the University of the Pacific, all demand that we should have, at as early a day as possible, an institution of a high grade in this part of the State therefore,
Resolved, That a Committee of Six be appointed to take this subject into careful consideration, to open correspondence with any person or parties who are favorable to such an enterprise and who are willing to aid in carrying it out by the appropriating lands or other available means, and report the result at the next meeting of this Conference; all of which is respectfully submitted.
T. M. LEIHY,
C. W. TABR,
Jos. BEACH,
GEO. S. HICKEY,
J. R. TANSEY.
The Committee indicated in the report was appointed, consisting of J. E. Tausey, Adam Blandt, J. M. Leihy, J. E. McComas, J. W. Potts and M. B. Bozard.
Governor T. G. Osborn of Kansas, who arrived in this city direct from Topeka, says in regard to the telegrams published from Chicago, to the effect that grasshoppers are already becoming troublesome in Missouri, Kansas, Nebraska and other Western States is not altogether true. That so far its Kansas is concerned, some two weeks since some grasshoppers were hatched out down in the southeastern corner of that State near Fort Scott, but that a cold rain set in and continued for two days, which had the effect of killing all the young hoppers; that they only occurred in patches as intervals throughout a small area of country, and that there is no fear whatever that anything like the plague of last year will be witnessed during the coming season; and that in Nebraska the same state of affairs exist—San Francisco Bulletin.
It is a gloomy prospect that we have before us. For evermore we shall have
THE HAWAIIAN ISLANDS.
In view of the favorable action of the United States Senate on the Hawaiian Reciprocity Treaty, public attention is more than usually directed to the commerce and resources of the Islands. The Hawaiian Kingdom is made up of twelve islands, containing 4,000,000 acres, of which 500,000 acres are adapted to cultivation, and much of the remainder is adapted for grazing. The population in 1872 was 57,000, a decrease of 7,200 natives and an increase of 1,200 foreign population since 1862. There are 32 sugar estates now in operation, which will produce this year 15,200 tons of sugar, as follows:
Islands. Plantations. Tons.
Kaua... 3 1,750
Oahu... 8 1,700
Maul... 11 7,300
Hawaii... 10 4,450
Total... 32 15,200
The coffee crop last year amounted to 800,000 lbs., most of which was used at home. The rice crop is about 2,000,000 lbs. There are 10,000 sheep on the Islands. The imports average about $1,500,000, and the exports $1,800,000. Ordinarily, San Francisco gets about one-third of this trade, but under the treaty she ought to double the business. — Boston Commercial List.
As they entered a dry goods store yesterday, you would have said that love dwelt in both hearts, and that a dove of peace rested on every shingle on the roof of their abiding place. She saw a lovely dress, and she begged him to buy, but he replied:
"I can't darling, not before next week."
"Can't you dear?" she smiled, "Well I will wait."
They had hardly passed the door before he said:
"I'd like to see myself getting that dress."
And she answered:
"You couldn't buy one side of it, and if you could you are too stingy and mean to do it."
