THE COMING CENTENNIAL
To the People of California sufficient progress has been made to satisfy us that the grand National and International Exposition at Philadelphia next year, in commemoration of the centennial anniversary of the nation's birth, will be a brilliant success, if all the States contribute the quota of expense assigned to them. Present indications give assurance that all the States will respond promptly and liberally, and California, we are sure, will not be the sole exception. The magnificent buildings intended for the display of the nation's progress and wealth and industrial activity, are already in process of erection. They will cover forty acres of ground in Fairmount Park, and will cost about ten millions of dollars. Of this sum Pennsylvania alone has subscribed four and a half millions of dollars, and other States have contributed with a liberality inspired by a settled purpose to throw all previous international expositions in the shade. California has been called upon to subscribe the small sum of ninety-five thousand dollars greenbacks, equivalent to about eighty-two thousand dollars in gold. In return, the subscribers will personally receive Centennial stock, for the redemption of which all the profits of the enterprise are pledged, and which the managers at Philadelphia confidently predict will be sufficient to repay the full amount of subscriptions, dollar for dollar. But in addition to this personal security, the State of California will enjoy the privilege of making a grand display of her wealth and her attractions; the fabrics of her mills, her foundries and her workshops; the products of her soil and other mines; models illustrating her social progress and even showing in miniature the striking natural features of the country that have attracted so many strangers to her shores. Our inquiries satisfy us.

demption of which all the profits of the enterprise are pledged, and which the managers at Philadelphia confidently predict will be sufficient to repay the full amount of subscriptions, dollar for dollar. Our inquiries satisfy us that all the space allotted to us will be filled. The pride of our people has been aroused and the effort will be made to show that, young as we are, our State can make a display to which the thousands of Californians who will visit the Exposition can point with pride. The undersigned have been duly commissioned by the authorities in Philadelphia to raise the amount California has been called upon to contribute. There is no time to be lost; the building must be completed in December next, for on the 1st of January the doors are to be opened for the admission of articles intended for exhibition.
We appeal with confidence to the proverbial liberality and State pride of our people to assist us in raising the needful amount. It is sufficient to say that if we do not raise it, California cannot be represented at the Centennial, for we cannot accept the place assigned to us as a charity.
After careful consideration, we have appointed the following gentlemen to constitute canvassing committees for the city of San Francisco:
Committee No. 1.—John J. Valentine, C. W. Kellogg, Frank M. Pixley.
Committee No. 2.—W. W. Dodge, C. D. O'Sullivan, Frederick L. Castle.
Committee No. 3.—James R. Keene, Wm. Burling, George W. Smiley.
These gentlemen are authorized to receive subscriptions to the Centennial stock, and we bespeak for them in their public-spirited efforts a cordial reception and a liberal support from their fellow-citizens.
The undersigned will be responsible for the safe custody and proper appropriation of all the funds collected.
Signed: Romualdo Pacheco, James Otls, W. T. Coleman, A. J. Moulder, H. L. Davis, Alex. Austin, James C. Patrick, A. S. Hallidle, W. W. Dodge, Tiburelo Parrott, M. S. Latham, W. T. SAN JOSE, April 29.—For some time past a report had gained credence that the grave of Vasquez had been tampered with, and the head removed for phrenological examination. To allay further doubt and satisfy themselves, the relatives had the grave opened at Santa Clara this morning at ten o'clock. The body was found all right with the head attached. The features and the body were greatly decomposed for the length of time they were buried, and the clothing was covered with a plaster.

The features and the body were greatly decomposed for the length of time they were buried, and the clothing was covered with mould. The body was not removed from the coffin. Eight of his relatives were present, the grave being opened by Encarnacion Garcia, his cousin. There were about thirty persons in all, reporters, constables, etc. The grave was closed after a few minutes and the crowd dispersed.
Ladies who wish to modernize plain basques, or change culrasses into the new fashion, can now do so by adding to the lower part of the two middle forms a straight piece of silk, laid in from twenty to twenty-five fine plaits. Breast pockets are again in vogue, and there are also reticule pockets made to bulge out as if the oval pouch was nearly filled.
Senator Ingalls, of Kansas, went security for his brother, to the amount of $50,000. The latter, who was in the shoe business, failed, and the Senator was held responsible. He has assigned all his Atchison property for the payment of the debt, pledged his salary as Senator for one year in advance, and is still debtor to the amount of $25,000. A rare bird.
Mr. Halliwell, in his "Illustrations of the Life of Shakespeare," said that the last chance of finding Shakespeare's papers was to search behind the panels of the old house of Lady Barnard, the grand-daughter and last lineal descendant of Shakespeare. This house is Abington Abbey, Northampton, which belongs to Lord Overstone, and is tenanted by Dr. Thomas Priard. At Mr. Furnivall's instance, Lord Overstone and Dr. Priard have given leave that the search may be made this season, at such time and in such manner as shall be convenient to the tenant. Mr. Halliwell has undertaken to hear the expense of the search which will be conducted by an architect under his direction.
