Anaheim Gazette SATURDAY...APRIL 2, 1875 NOTICE. Mr. H. S. Austin, has been appointed canvassing agent for the Gazette, and will call upon non-subscribers in the vicinity of Anaheim during next week. The business community will feel gratified at the information that Goodall, Nelson & Perkins will soon double the steamship service on the southern route. The rapidly increasing trade demands this action. The spelling-match fever has reached San Francisco. Arrangements are being made by which a picked nine of the editors, proof-readers and compositors of the city shall spell against the same number of lawyers. These spelling matches are just now very popular. The Los Angeles Mirror and Evening Express have both been enlarged. We should judge that Tiffany is editor of the Mirror. We don't know any other man in Los Angeles capable of stuffing so many bad puns into so small a space. The citizens of Santa Barbara some time ago organized a joint stock company for the purpose of building a hotel of sufficient capacity to accommodate the visitors to that charming town. The foundation of the building has already been completed, and the workmen are engaged on the frame work. The foundation of the building has already been completed, and the workmen are engaged on the frame work. A few days ago a private dispatch from San Francisco informed interested parties in the East that the surplus grain crop of this State for the current year would reach 600,000 tons. This was 200,000 tons more than the estimate made by Friedlander on the same day. It is considered certain that the former figures are rather under than above the mark. The La Cronica says that in the list of wealthy men, published by the Express, many omissions were made among which is the name of Jose Juan (Pinicote) who should have been put down for a cool hundred thousand of personal property. We intended, giving a list of the "bloated" of Anaheim, but after reading that of the Express we fear to call down vengeance on the tax assessors of the county. A dispatch from Benicia says that about 1 o'clock on last Monday morning, a fire was discovered in the house of Wu Melrose, a brother of one of the proprietors of the Gazette. The house being a frame building, burned so rapidly that the proprietor barely escaped with his life by leaping through the window with his child in his arms. His wife also made her escape, but was badly burned. Three men, named Finnerty, Shea and Hansen, were burned to death, although every effort was made to save them. The property is a total loss, and was, unfortunately, not insured. And now comes a telegraph dispatch and informs us that General Butler, while in command of the United States military forces at New Orleans, seized a large amount of property for the use of the forces under his command. Claims have been presented to the Treasury Department for the value of the property thus seized, the amount of the claims being fifty thousand dollars. Butler now appears as counsel for the claimants, which places Benjamin F. Butler in the peculiar relation of prosecuting an action against the United States for an act of war performed by General Butler. In the early part of last year, James... In the early part of last year, James Lick, of San Francisco, executed a deed of trust conveying away his property to certain Trustees, who were to dispose of the property and apply the proceeds to the building of an observatory and other public institutions. On the 24th inst., Mr. Lick addressed a note to the Trustees requesting them to resign their charge and let the property again revert into his hands. The reasons given for this extraordinary request were that, when the deed of conveyance was executed, he was laboring under great mental depression, caused by suffering health; and that a cool and careful study of the situation has convinced him that the conveyance contains many serious errors, which ought to be corrected. He further states that it is his desire to carry out all the benevolent schemes mentioned in the conveyance during his lifetime, and is satisfied that this can only be done by again having sole control of the property. The Trustees in their reply to Mr. Lick stated that they had been advised by eminent counsel that they had no power to resign, and very firmly intimated that they would retain possession at all hazards. Immediately on receiving this reply, Mr. Lick executed a deed of revocation, which was duly placed upon record. And now the next move on the board is the filing of papers in the case of Lick vs. Selby, et al., and the probable frittering away of the large property in endless litigation. There is another class of persons that are seldom what they appear to be. They act from selfish, almost never from disinterested motives. They are always pleasant and agree- able, but their warmth and glow are all upon the surface, never radiating from the soul, and well calculated to deceive if one possesses no line and plummet by which to sound the moral depths of others. We should never be hasty in our likes and dialkies, especially the latter; for it is better to be deceived sometimes than it is to harbor evil thoughts and suspicions about persons that a little reflection, a quiet waiting might dispell. Give the fine gold a chance to appear if it be there. I know of but one sensible rule to adopt when introduced to a person, and that is to look for good qualities and try to find them. "Love thinketh no evil" or not until the thoughts have a foundation to rest upon. It neither embraces too warmly nor repels too readily at first, but holds a stranger at a respectful distance until he shows by his conduct what are the ruling traits of his character. These likes have reference to the moral qualities, or supposed moral qualities of others. I have known those who were impressed favorably or unfavorably by reason of the physical contour or "get up" of the man. They cannot like this person or that because the form or figure with which they have been endowed is not just as they would have directed, had they been consulted. How can they like such a person when he has got such a large mouth, foot or nose. They are too short or too tall, too slim or too large or broad, have red hair or a bald head. They have such a morbid taste about such matters that one is led to suppose that they were of the opinion that such arrangements were made to order, that mankind were responsible for having them in possession. Such persons only scan the surface, for some of the wisest and best may not be models of physical beauty; but it is some consolation for them to know that a cheerful, loving heart will always keep the countenance fresh and blooming, and the fragrance of a well spent life is immortal. A. B. AROUND THE COUNTY. Col. E. M. Sanford complains about the depredations of horse thieves. An infant child of General Banning died on Saturday. NEW ADVERTISEMENTS REWARD.
