Anaheim Gazette SATURDAY ... MARCH 27, 1875. Kleinigkriten. F. & J. Backs are preparing to build a new front on their furniture warrooms. Lowe & Leach filing out a new advertisement to the breeze this week, which will repay perusal. A surprise party is on the tapis, but in order that the "surprise" will be effected, we will not say anything about it. Gaddy & Lewis are having a passenger wagon built at Hill's establishment. It will be used on the depot route. We are informed that P. Davis & Bro. will soon build a large brick warehouse on the lot near the depot, purchased from Tim Boege. The firm of B. Dreyfus & Co. shipped forty-two pipes of wine on the last Panama steamer. A. Langenberger shipped fifty-four pipes at the same time. M. F. Parker has appointed Charles Harris agent for the Eureka No Chimney Lamp Burner, and he will canvass Anaheim and vicinity in a few days for this truly valuable invention. It is on the cards that Rowan will again be a candidate for County Treasurer, and the papers inimical to him have begun to howl about Cassarism and a third term. A gentleman named Ruhm has purchased a lot on Centre street, from B. Dreyfus. We believe it is his intention to build a blacksmith shop thereon. To-morrow is Easter. As the rabbits have been fed with cochineal fire company.—A meeting of citizens interested in the organization of a Fire Company, was held on Monday evening. Messrs. Fischer, Melrose and Richter were appointed a committee to prepare by-laws. The committee, appointed at a previous meeting to collect funds from the property-holders for the necessary expenses of the company, were granted further time to complete their labors. They are meeting with flattering success, which shows that our citizens are alive to the advantages of an active body of fire fighters. Lumber has been purchased for flooring the truck-house. The company was permanently organized by the election of the following officers: John Fischer, President; R. Menzel, Vice President; R. Melrose, Secretary; L. Durr, Treasurer. It was thought best to postpone the election of the active officers until the membership was increased. Durr, Menzel and Wartenburg were appointed to procure members, and endeavor to secure a good attendance at the meeting to be held on Monday night at Enterprise Hall. By-laws will then be adopted, officers elected and other very important business transactions. A Correction.—The author of the letter in the San Francisco Occident, which we copied last week, in stating that Anaheim wine contained from twenty to thirty degrees of alcohol, made a very serious misstatement, while, if uncontradicted, would be likely to injure the high standing acquired by these wines, for their purity and freedom from all deleterious substances. As the wine leaves the cellars of our producers it is absolutely free from alcohol; but it is a notorious fact that consumers in the large cities of the Eastern States, and even of this State, can seldom obtain pure California wine, unless they buy direct from Gabino Real... RELIGIOUS MATHEMATIC WILL OFFICIATE AT It is on the cards that Rowan will again be a candidate for County Treasurer, and the papers inimical to him have begun to howl about Caesarism and a third term. A gentleman named Ruhm has purchased a lot on Centre street, from B. Dreyfus. We believe it is his intention to build a blacksmith shop thereon. To-morrow is Easter. As the rabbits have been fed with cochineal and tea leaves for the past week, the "little ones" will find beautifully colored eggs in the nests to-morrow morning. Otto Evers, finding his present boarding house entirely too small to accommodate his large patronage, has purchased lumber and will at once commence the erection of a large building. Do something for your suffering brethern in Kansas and Nebraska. Nearly every town on the coast have contributed their mite, and Mr. Langenberger is anxious that Anaheim should also appear in the roll of honor. Residents of Santa Ana report that place enjoying a full share of the prosperity, vouchsafed to the entire valley. A large increase in the population is noticeable, and the influx of land-buyers show no signs of abatement. Mr. Thompson, the dancing-master, will give a dancing party on next Saturday evening. The public will then have an opportunity to judge of the proficiency acquired by the pupils in the terpsichorean art. Williams & Smith, of the Cottage Photograph Gallery, in Los Angeles, are first-class artists, even if they do descend to poetry. A specimen of their poetical composition will be found in our advertising columns. Mr. T. J. Welch is building a dwelling house on Fischer's land, near the proposed brick kiln. Obed Macy will in a few days commence building a dwelling house on the Helmann & George vineyard. The crowd which made such a furious raid through our streets on Wednesday evening, were not as they loudly proclaimed, Chavez' gang, but were a pack of Indian sheep-shearers, full of tangle-foot, benzine and meanness. The library of the Anaheim Schools will in a few days receive an accession of ninety books. The money realized from the exhibition, given some time ago, will be used in making the purchase as the amount was twenty to thirty degrees of alcohol, made a very serious misstatement, which, if uncontradicted, would be likely to injure the high standing acquired by these wines, for their purity and freedom from all deleterious substances. As the wine leaves the cellars of our producers it is absolutely free from alcohol; but it is a notorious fact that consumers in the large cities of the Eastern States, and even of this State, can seldom obtain pure California wine, unless they buy direct from such houses as the Anaheim Wine Growers' Association, in San Francisco, or B. Dreyfus & Co., in New York. As long as our wine-growers are forced to sell their wine to the San Francisco middlemen, it will be impossible to prevent it being "doctored" before reaching the actual consumer. The above refers, of course, to white wine, which is the chief product of our vineyards. Angelica and port contain a small per cent. of alcohol, but the amount of those wines manufactured is infinitesimal. BRICK BURNING.-Mr. Tim. Boege has several men at work clearing his land, near the depot, preparatory to making and burning brick. Experts pronounce the soil first-class for brick-making. The first kiln will contain about five hundred thousand, and if the demand is great, Mr. Boege will manufacture brick by the million. As soon as the brick is ready for use, he will commence the erection of a large warehouse near the depot. Our energetic friend, John Fischer, also sees a bonanza in the manufacture of brick, and will, in a short time, commence operations on his land east of town. The brick will be manufactured under the supervision of Mr. T. J. Welch, whose experience in the business warrant the assertion that the article produced will be very superior. It is estimated that the brick can be furnished for about $8 per thousand. ARTESIAN WELLS.-The past week has been a lucky one for the seekers after subterranean streams. Mr. McGregor, whose farm lies about one-half mile west from Metcalf's, has been fortunate in finding a splendid stream—fully three inch. He will at once build a reservoir and thus be able to irrigate his entire farm. The Artesia Company have also struck a booming well on the Artesia colony. The flow is nearly five inches. The success in finding artesian water all around us should encourage our citizens to sink a well somewhere in the centre of town. Why don't Richards or Fischer, once in this bush have been commenced end of the ditch and scattered over about ground, pushing forsible rapidity. And Chinese arrived yet the waters of the Sea bringing untold wear this valley. RELIGIOUS MATHEMATICS-McFarland, of the City, will officiate at Church to-morrow the evening a praise held, at which sin chief feature. The library of the Anaheim Schools will in a few days receive an accession of ninety books. The money realized from the exhibition, given some time ago, will be used in making the purchase, as the amount was found insufficient to purchase gymnastic apparatus. The question of cheap water is being solved by Bennerscheidt. He sinks the common two-inch water pipe into the ground to a depth of twenty or thirty feet, pumps the sand out, and a good well of water is the result. A well twenty feet in depth costs $25, including a Douglass lift pump. A dispute between two chivalrous youths the other day nearly resulted in a tragedy. By the intercession of mutual friends, however, the matter was amicably adjusted, and angry passions washed away with a bottle of Green Seal. They evidently believe with Burns that When newborn anger at a pla, An' just as wud as wind can be, How easy can the barley broom Cement the quarrel. It's aye the cheapest lawyer's fee To taste the barrel. A correspondent of the Voce del Popolo, of San Francisco, has been writing up Anaheim and Los Angeles county generally. He says the following nice thing about one of our citizens: "We had the pleasure of meeting Sefior Don Pedro Richards and wife. Mr. Richards carries on a magnificent business in wines and liquors. He is a native of Dalmatia, and has lived in Anaheim six years and is one of the most popular men in the town for his liberality and straightforward dealing." ADDITIONAL STOCK—Following is a list of subscriptions to the stock of the hotel, obtained during the week. It is the best evidence of the unanimity of opinion, held by our citizens, in regard to the benefits which such a building would confer on the town. The articles of incorporation of the Company were filed in the office of the Secretary of State on Tuesday last. Gabino Real.....$1,000 A. Langenberger.....500 Melrose & Athearn.....500 P. A. Operations have been commenced at the upper end of the ditch and the workmen are scattered over about three miles of ground, pushing forward with all possible rapidity.
