—Menzel spreads a magnificent lunch to-night.
—Lent began on Wednesday. The horn of the fisherman is exalted, and his toot may be heard afar off.
—Reiser's brewery is so far completed as to enable him to commence brewing to-day.
—F. E. Melenz will occupy his new saloon in the basement of Kroeger's building early the coming week. He is having it fitted up most invitingly.
—On Monday next Halberstadt & Co.'s teams will commence hauling lumber from Anaheim Landing to their new yard near the depot.
—To-morrow is St. Valentine's day, and in preparation for that event Clark & Co. have received a large stock of valentines.
—Dr. J. M. Roberts has removed his dental office to Lungenberger's new building. The Doctor is an accomplished dentist, and is building up a good practice.
—The schooner N. L. Drew, Capt. Paul, from Humboldt, arrived at Anaheim Landing on Sunday last. It brought 150,000 feet of lumber for Halberstadt & Co.
—The partnership between Drs. Hardin and Jones has been dissolved. Dr. Jones will occupy the old office in the Odd Fellow's building, and Dr. Hardin's office will be at his residence.

ORANGE — Our Orange correspondent writes: I believe no mention has ever been made of our Sabbath School. Few places can boast of a finer or better conducted Sabbath School than we have here. It is under the superintendence of Mr. L. J. Lockhart, who has experience and well knows how to make a Sabbath School interesting and profitable. There is scarcely a Sunday when there are not above one hundred persons present. The exercises, with the singing, are really an enjoyable entertainment……There are many excellent people who have taken up their abode in this settlement within the past few months, but the Orange folks have especially to congratulate themselves with having as a permanent resident Professor Charles Lewis. As a teacher of vocal music, he has a high and enviable reputation, while his other qualities of head and heart will doubly endear him to all with whom he comes in contact. We understand he is about to open a singing school. If such be the case, he should have a full attendance……Among the luminaries that are building up and brightening the prospects of our young city, there has appeared a new being to enact a part—a celestial of the euphonious name of Gun Lung. We don't know that he takes the spots out of men, but he does out of things, especially the nether garments, which he is supposed to make as white as snow. He has located close by the Grange store, and contrives to get out a perfect labyrinth of unaccountable apparel on wash days — unaccountable, at least, to certain bachelors who wont to cross these lots. They can't cross now; they get bewildered and lost……The new Methodist Church will be dedicated to morrow morning. The exercises, which will be very impressive, will commence at 11 o'clock.

The partnership between Dr. Hardin and Jones has been dissolved. Dr. Jones will occupy the old office in the Odd Fellow's building, and Dr. Hardin's office will be at his residence.
A ball was given on Wednesday evening at Enterprise Hall to celebrate the success of the Water election. Though sparsely attended, the few who were there, no doubt, had a very pleasant time.
A tinsmith has leased the store in the Gazette building now occupied by the agricultural machinery department of Heimann & George. The gentleman has gone to San Francisco for a stock of tinware.
Father Sanchez was in Anaheim and Santa Ana during the early part of the week soliciting subscriptions for the benefit of the Orphan Asylum at Pajaro. Quite a large sum was collected for that worthy purpose.
A petition to the Board of Supervisors to create Public Highways of all section lines, reserved for highways by the Los Angeles and San Bernardino Land Company, is in circulation and being numerously signed.
The former members of Anaheim Fire Company, No. 1, are requested to meet at Enterprise Hall on Monday evening at 7 o'clock, for the purpose of coming to some decision in regard to the disposal of the apparatus.
Otto Evers has sold his house and lot, on the Heimann & George vineyard, to P. Hennenfeld, late of the firm of M. Frankel & Co., of Santa Ana. Mr. H. will soon open a store in Anaheim.
The Board of Supervisors have located the Santa Ana bridge a quarter of a mile below where the telegraph crosses. Advertisements for proposals to build the bridge were ordered to be published.
Letters addressed to the following named persons are remaining in the office of Wells, Fargo & Co.: Thomas J. Scully, J. P. Lowe, F. F. Gallado, J. Goodrich, C. P. Ely, Seifora Dona Vilenta Gastelo, Sr Don Juan Belardes and H. Krooger.
A dispatch received by Laffucherie yesterday afternoon states that Corvelle, the confidence man, has been arrested at Riverside, San Bernardino county. Ten or twelve of his victims left here yesterday to interview him.
On Monday night an attempt was made to break into the store of Gaillard & Savin, in the Gazette building, by two men, who were discovered in the act by Stewart, the well-borer. He gave chase to the would-be robbers, but in the darkness they managed to effect labyrinth of unaccountable apparel on wash days — unaccountable, at least, to certain bachelors who were wont to cross these lots. They can't cross now; they get bewildered and lost... The new Methodist Church will be dedicated to-morrow morning. The exercises, which will be very impressive, will commence at 11 o'clock.
THE WATER ELECTION.—On last Saturday, the qualified electors of the Cajon district held an election for the purpose of voting upon the question of creating a water district under the provisions of the Bush Irrigating Act. The full number of votes in the district is fifty-three, of which only forty were cast. Of these votes 33 were in favor of, and only 7 against. At the same election three Water Commissioners and an Overseer were elected. The Commissioners are D. W. Field, R. H. Gilman, and Geo. F. Miles; and J. B. Pierce, Overseer. The reasons for and against the creation of the district have been thoroughly argued and discussed, and the result of the election shows that, whatever be the defects of the law, these interested thought that it contained enough value to counteract the effect of any of its unwieldy provisions. And besides, until it is practically tested, it is extremely difficult to decide what are its defects. Experience will point out these, and the next Legislature can make such amendments as the law requires for its efficient and economical working.
A NEW ORDER.—Mr. A. S. Addis, of photographic fame, instituted on Monday last a lodge of the new order called "Janissaries of Light." This association has for its object the mutual assistance of its members, and possesses other features peculiar to all benevolent secret societies. For the present the meetings will be held at the office of Dr. Jones every Monday evening. The following are the officers: Dr. M. S. Jones, W. C.; and Dr. Jones, John Fischer and E. W. Champlin, Council.
LOCAL LYRICS.
Come listen to me for awhile, my boy,
Come listen to me for a spell.
While I spin you a rhyme,
(The first in some time),
And I will haunt to tell
What befell
A youth by the name of C——1.
An elegant youth was he, my boy,
Witty and cheerful and gay;
But, the truth must be told,
His laudlord he sold.
On Friday when he ran away.
And I say
It was wrong to go off in that way.
He lived at the Planters' in style, my boy,
In really elegant style:
He drank wine and punch,
And took friends to lunch.
As if he owned a big pile;
Whilst the while,
He had nothing about him but "style."
One hundred and forty from Frank, my boy.
And from others a great deal more
Did this youth take
When he made a break
A dispatch received by Lafaucherie yesterday afternoon states that Corvelle, the confidence man, has been arrested at Riverside, San Bernardino county. Ten or twelve of his victims left here yesterday to interview him.

Superintendent Hewitt advertises that an excursion train will run to Anaheim every Sunday. Fare for the round trip, $2. The hospitality of Anahelm folks is proverbial, and our neighbors can rest assured that a pleasant time and hearty welcome awaits them.
One of the best wells in Westminster colony has just been completed on Mr. Edwards' place. The pipe—8 inch—was level with the surface of the ground, says our informant, and the water rose with terrific force eighteen inches above the ground, bringing with it rocks of from one to three pounds weight. The well is only sixty feet in depth.
An item in the Los Angeles Express, to the effect that a Mrs. Swilson, of Anahelm, had given birth to triplets on the 3d, is not borne out by facts. The result of our reporter's inquiry discloses, 1st—That Mrs. Swilson don't expect any little angels for some time; 2nd—That Mrs. Swilson is a respectable widow; 3rd—That no lady by the name of Swilson resides in Anaheim.
It would be a sort of retributive justice if Blanken had met with a slight accident on Sunday, for then he would have been compelled to take some of those horrible mixtures which it is his delight to compound and see the victim swallow. It is the general belief that the runaway resulted most fortunately; for had the harness broken, or the buggy turned over, or any accident occurred, it is probable that some damage would have been done. This we assert without fear of contradiction.
