"LUCRETIA BORGIA."
Lucretia Bergia was an Italian of noble birth, and one of the most celebrated boarding-house keepers of the fifteenth century. But a strange fatality seemed to overtake the most of those who eat their hash at her table. A boarder would apparently be perfectly well at dinner, cracking his jokes with Lucre, and sending his plate up for another piece of liver, or asking for a second piece of pie, and yet be a corpse before night. The neighbors began to talk about it after awhile. They shook their head every time they saw an undertaker's wagon back up in front of Borgia's house; and if a man was observed to fall down suddenly on the street and gasp, and groan, and turn a variety of colors, they would ask him, "What caused this? Did Lucretia board?" and if he nodded his head they knew very well he was a gone goose.
Lucretia was a whole-souled, generous woman. If she had any nice palatable poison about the house she always wanted some one to have it. A boarder felt a little sick, she stood ever ready to give him a dose, and never charged a cent. Arsenic, as everybody knows who has ever taken any considerable quantity of it, is a very expensive luxury, costing a man his life frequently, and yet Lucretia gave dead loads of it to folks. Nothing mean about her. She never made any account of strychnine, not on the bill of fare, and very generously threw in corrosive sublimate with the victuals. Prussie acid served in rooms without extra charge. No objections to children and nurses eating Paris-green at the first table. There is no boarding house-keeper like her nowadays that we know of. Her cuisine was furnished with the very best the laboratory afforded, and as for wine it was simply a drug at her table.
Her death occurred in a singular manner. She had a son, by her first husband, who, ignorant of his parentage, went by the name of Gennaro, and was a soldier of fortune, though he hailn't any fortune worth speaking of. Lucretia knew who he was, however,

Her cuisine was furnished with the very best the laboratory afforded, and as for wine it was simply a drug at her table.
Her death occurred in a singular manner. She had a son, by her first husband, who, ignorant of his parentage, went by the name of Gennaro, and was a soldier of fortune, though he haunt any fortune worth speaking of. Lucretia knew who he was, however, and constantly kept an eye out for him. She followed him about to masquerade balls and the like, which excited the jealous rage of old Borgin, who didn't know who he was, but supposed he was her lover. Although such a thing as a married woman having a lover is almost unknown in these days, it was quite common in the fifteenth century. The Duke-gave Gennaro a lot of cold poison one night which Lucretia had laid away to warm over for breakfast, but his mother was ready with an antidote. She read to him a resume of the Beecher-Tilton affair; the young man vomited and got well.
But regarding the death of Lucretia: A lot of the wild young men of Farrara, coming home from a ball at daylight, had to pass the Borgia mansion. They chalked insulting words on the front door, and when Lucretia saw them she determined on revenge. She invited them all to her house to a banquet (Gennaro included), dosed their wine, and sent them to an early grave. Gennaro she expected to escape, as he had sworn off before a justice of the peace the day before, but, although he didn't mean to count that time, he fell with the rest. He lived long enough, however, to avenge his friends, who had gone a little ahead of him, by stabbing Lucretia, when she declared the relationship existing between them, in a little speech of some five lengths. Although a young man, and life was very dear to him, when Gennaro learned that he was a Borgia, he laid right down and yielded his breath with resignation. Gentle reader, has Lucretia Bored ye?
How Thermometers Are Made.—A writer in the Polytechnic Bulletin gives the following description of the method of making thermometers at a manufacturing establishment at Chester, Pa.: The glass tubes as received are about a yard long. A boy pricks them with a hard steel knife, and breaks them into the lengths required. The pores, which are flat, are compared by means of a lens with those of ten standard sizes, and the tubes assorted accordingly.
They are then passed to the blow pipe table. Each glassblower has a foot bellows, and uses an oil lamp. Melting the glass at one end of the tube, he blows it into a bulb by pressing the sides of a hollow India rubber ball attached at the other end, proportioning the size of his bulb to the bore of his tube, and ascertainting the side by using a pair of callipers. While the bulb is hot the tube is inverted in mercury.

I will endeavor to maintain its well known reputation as the only FIRST-CLASS HOTEL South of San Francisco.

NEWSPAPER PUBLISHING.—The following from the American Journalist, will give the reader some idea of the profits of newspaper publishing:
During the last four weeks no less than 200 daily and weekly newspapers have suspended publication in this country alone; and it is estimated that $8,000,000 have been lost during the year in the publication business. How many of the newspapers suspended because of the failure of subscribers to promptly pay their subscriptions, will never be known with any degree of certainty. That a large majority of them owe their failure to this neglect is undoubtedly true, although negligence on the part of advertisers to punctually settle their bills may have had much to do with this extraordinary number of suspensions.
The fact is the year 1874 has been an unusually severe one on newspaper publishers; few newspapers anywhere have more than paid expenses, while three-fourths of the whole number that have weathered the storm, have done it at considerable sacrifice.
Mrs. Partington, reading of the strike of the wire drawers, remarked: "Ah, me what new-fangled things won't they wear next?"
