Anaheim Gazette SATURDAY JANUARY 23, 1875 Kleinigkeiten. The next term of the District Court will commence on Monday. There is a registered letter at the post-office, addressed to Mrs. Geo. McGrindle. The Supreme Court has denied a rehearing in the case of Fischer vs. Bergson. Another trial must be held in the District Court. Daniel McArthur was forwarded to Los Angeles on Thursday in charge of Special Constable Rose of that city. You can buy tickets for the ball to be given on Washington's Birthday, at any of the principal stores in Anaheim. Read the advertisement. Messrs. Egan, Pryor and all the other water-bound San Juan Capistrano passed through Anaheim yesterday for home. Although more rain fell in a shorter time than has been known for several years, the Santa Ana river was but little affected by it, having beenfordable the whole time. The County Auditor has in his office warrants for the following persons: E. W. Tallant, G. W. Vance, Patterson Flowers, Hardlin & Jones, L. Halberstadt & Co. Packages remain at Wells Fargo & Co.'s office, addressed to the following persons: M. A. Ward, F. Ayllon, A. M. Lugo, J. M. Clark, T. J. Scully, T. P. Norian. A proposition to levy a tax to complete their school-house will come before the electors of Bolsa Grande School District next month. See Trustees' notice in advertising columns. THE KILLING OF CHAS. NIELSON. Early last Sunday morning a difficulty occurred at the Planters' Hotel between Chas. Nielson, the porter of that establishment, and one Daniel McArthur, a waiter, which resulted in the almost instantaneous death of the first named person. Justice Bailey, who acted as coroner at the inquest, summoned a jury, composed of the following gentlemen: Th. Rimpau, B. Dreyfus, Ph. Davis, N. H. Mitchell, Max Nebelung, D. E. Miles, John Fischer, C. Mossman, H. Knapke, M. Calisher, and F. W. Athearn. The facts of the case, as elicited in the examination were: That an unpleasantness had existed for some time past between the accused and the prisoner, which had led several times to hard words between them; that on the morning in question the prisoner had conducted himself in an offensive manner to the deceased, so much so as to cause an open rupture between them; that deceased had thrown hot water in the face of the prisoner; and that the prisoner had then drawn a cornea'el dirk knife, which was upon his person, and with it cut the deceased so severely that death resulted in a few moments thereafter. The deceased person, Chas. Nielson, was a native of Norway, aged about thirty-five years, and bore the general reputation of being a quiet, inoffensive man. He leaves behind him a young wife. Daniel McArthur, his murderer, is quite a youth in appearance and is only about twenty or twenty-one years of age. He has a father living in Oakland, but came to this place from Los Angeles. He has been committed to appear before the Grand Jury, now in session at Los Angeles, to answer to the charge of murder which has been brought against him, and being charged with an offence, not bailable, is at present in jail, awaiting their action. A proposition to levy a tax to complete their school-house will come before the electors of Bolsa Grande School District next month. See Trustees' notice in advertising columns. Max. Nebelung has leased the upper story of Mr. Langenberger's new brick building on Centre street. Those desirous of securing elegant apartments will do well to interview Max. "Jeff Davis" has returned to Anaheim on account of his health and in order to assist at the September elections. In the interim he has opened a boot-blacking stand at the Planters' Hotel. Professor Toombs, of Carlton College, Ohio, has purchased a tract of land adjoining that of W. M. McFadden, and will take up his abode there sometime during next March or April. From Sunday until yesterday there was no mail communication between Los Angeles and this place. Such an occurrence was never known when Charlie Wright carried the mail. Owing to the inclementity of the weather on last Sunday, the installation of the Elders elect of the First Presbyterian Church was postponed. The ceremony will take place tomorrow, previous to the delivery of the morning service. A few days ago a little son of Judge Johnson, of Santa Ana, whilst attempting to cut a rope loose from the neck of a pet calf, cut himself across the right eye. The wound did not appear to cause much pain, but it has resulted in the entire loss of the eye. Mr. Robert McFadden, who was in town yesterday from the Santa Ana settlements, reports that Gospel Swamp was never so dry after a rain as it is now. It is a mystery to the citizens of that usually very wet locality where the water went to. One thing however is certain; it didn't remain on top of the ground. There will be services at the Presbyterian Church to-morrow at 11 A.M. and 7 P.M. Sunday-school at 10 A.M. Preaching by the pastor, Rev. J. M. Allia. Subject in the evening, "Thoughts suggested by the late hom- About the Railroad.-The rain storm played "smash" with the railroad, washing away culverts and in different places softening the embankments so that they could not bear even the weight of the ties and iron. On Sunday morning the train came as far as Coyote creek but from that point the U.S. mail and the more venturesome passengers did the balance of the journey on a hand car. A force of men was scattered over the road as soon as the weather would permit, and the damages have been so far repaired as to allow the passage of hand-cars with mail matter, etc., yesterday as far as Spruiles' station on this side of New San Gabriel River, where they were met by one of the San Diego conches, by which the first mail of the week was brought through. It is expected that trains will be running on time again early next week. In the meantime building is going on at the depot as rapidly as the material at hand will permit. And this lack of material is caused, not by the failure of trains, but because the railway company find it extremely difficult to get their lumber orders filled, so great is the demand throughout the entire State. However, a very fair showing has been made in the two weeks since the arrival of the first train; the turn-table and tank have been completed, the frame work for a substantial warehouse and offices have been erected, and without any further back-set the whole work of building will be finished by the middle of February. Personal.-Among the many, whom the impassable state of the roads compelled to sojourn in Anaheim for a few days during the early part of the week, were Col. C. W. Wingard, Paymaster, U. S.A., and Mr. M. Hook, clerk in that department. For the past three months they have been traveling in Arizona, engaged in paying troops stationed at the various military posts in that Territory. Although the enforced delay was a cause of great an- Ana settlements, reports that Gospel Swamp was never so dry after a rain as it is now. J. M. Allia. Subject in the evening, "Thoughts suggested by the late homelife." All are invited...Divine service will be held at Enterprise Hall at 11 A.M. by Rev. Dr. Kellogg. Last week a son of Mr. Bush, of Santa Ana, and grandson of Hon. A. L. Bush, was playing with a broken whip-stock and fell down with it in his hand. The sharp and jagged end of the stick struck squarely in his nostril, and passed thence through the eye into the brain. The boy lingered in pain for two or three days before death came to his relief. Somebody, evidently an admirer and a countryman of one of Ireland's gifted and lamented sons, has written a letter to "Mr. Lumas, Curran Co., Cal," and deposited it in the post-office. There the letter still remains, because, although Kern County is evidently infested, it is a matter of conjecture what particular part of the county Mr. Lumas honors with his residence. The chief source of regret in our business community, when the news came that the San Diego line of the Pacific Mall Steamship Company had changed hands, was the fear that the Los Angeles agency would no longer be under the charge of Mr. McLellan. This fear has been removed however; Messrs. Goodall, Nelson & Perkins have appointed Mr. McLellan as their agent, and no change whatever in the business arrangements of the line will be made in consequence of the change in ownership. PERSONAL — Among the many, whom the impassable state of the roads compelled to sojourn in Anaheim for a few days during the early part of the week, were Col. C. W. Wingard, Paymaster; U. S. A., and Mr. M. Hook, clerk in that department. For the past three months they have been traveling in Arizona, engaged in paying troops stationed at the various military posts in that Territory. Although the enforced delay was a cause of great annoyance to these gentlemen, we cannot regret the opportunity it has afforded us of again clasping the hand and listening to the voice of one, whom we have ever held in high esteem, and who in times past was proved a true and valued friend.
