A touching story is told of a woman whose husband, a sea captain, was unconverted and for whose eternal welfare she had been during long years, agonizing in secret prayer. They spent their lives happily together on the ocean rich in each other's love, and enjoying both the stormy and sunny moods of the waters, and sights and sounds of many lands. He respected the piety of his wife, but she could not persuade him to share with her the possession of that pearl from the signet ring of the All Father, which is the only amulet of safety on either the waves of time or of eternity; the only passport "through the gates into the city"; the only assurance of anchorage by the shore of the crystal sea." Feeling a strong "impression" that it was important for him to take part himself in religious exercises, she proposed that instead of her both reading the Bible and leading in prayer as she had been accustomed to do, he take the lead in the reading portion of the exercises. He cordially accorded to the request, soon the light of "that fire," which has been the breaking of the morning of eternal life to many millions of souls, burned on that floating family altar often far at sea, but always drifting nearer and nearer to "the throbe that is high and white." The year passed brightly on then; how brightly, those only can know, who have learned by a blessed experience patiently to labor, and to pray till the promise of Him who has said, "ask and ye shall receive," is fulfilled. As the orders for husband, and then for wife, came to "heave anchor" for the long voyage, "that fire" on the altar had made all things ready. Christian wives, mothers, sisters, the call may be at midnight for unconverted husbands, sons, brothers, to "go out and meet the Bridegroom." It may be that some of you can profit by this beautiful example. "He reads and I pray," were the words in which she described the hallowed means she took to put the hand of a dear one on the golden line" that led him out to the light, and through the pearly gate. A witness irr the Vasquez trial identified Vasquez as the man who shot Davidson at Tres Pinos. Speaker Blaine and other leading Republicans are said to be working for a new election in Louisiana. The Senate Finance Bill has passed both Houses of Congress. It fixes the resumption of specie payments in 1879. The condemned revenue cutter, Reliance, was sold in San Francisco last Saturday to H. B. Tichenor for $16,000. An agricultural paper says that kind words will cure a cow of kicking, but many prefer the old way of mauling the critter with a fence rail until her heart is broken. That farmer understood human nature who said: "If you want to keep your boy at home, don't bear too hard on the grindstone when he turns the crank." The Contract and Finance Company and the Central Pacific Railroad pay their taxes for 1874 in Nevada county. The railroad was assessed at $12,000 per mile. Lailies should remember to keep their mouths shut when going out of a warm room into the cool air. In fact, it wouldn't hurt anything to keep them shut most of the time. The Estudillo family claim that the San Leandro Court-House property reverts to them, by reason of the removal of the County-seat. So says the records also. Suit has been brought to recover possession. The Central Pacific Railroad is completing arrangements to build a broad gauge road from about Corinne City to the coal fields at the head of Bear Lake. Sherman's opposition to allowing California gold note banks to increase their circulation up to 90 per cent. of their deposited bonds is based solely on the conviction that the margin of security proposed is not sufficient to secure holders of their circulation. The people of New Hampshire are not proud, but seem perfectly willing to allow the janitor of the State-house to use the basement of that structure for a hennery, and he is accordingly doing a flourishing business in the poultry line. A man who had saved the life of a daughter of a Boston millionaire, received $250 from the grateful parent. He was so overcome with the magnificent bounty that he paid out every cent of it to seventeen organ grinders to simultaneously serenade his benefactor. A gentleman said to his gardener: "George, the time will come when a man will be able to carry the manure of an acre of land in one of his waist-coat pockets." To which the gardener replied: "I believe it sir, but he will be able to carry all the crop in the other pocket." An energetic lady in Olwein, Iowa, laments her inability to vote. "Why if I were a man," she said recently. "Pd go to the polls if I had to be laid on a feather bed, placed on a stone boat, and hauled by a blind ox with one leg broken, but I'd vote! But what's the use of talking?" The Duchess of Edinburgh was recently presented with a splendidly-bound copy of the Holy Scriptures in imperial quarto, inclosed in a beautiful oaken casket. The volume was the gift of more than eight thousand subscribers, maidens of the United Kingdom, and was presented by a deputation of fifteen ladies. COMMISSION MERCHANTS Frank R. In their treatment,a purgative,e exerting a powerful influence upon these various organs,i is essentially necessary. There is no cathartic for the purpose equal to Dr. J.
