Dolores, the semi-blind nuisance, celebrated his return from the County Jail and the New Year at one and the same time. He varied his usual performance of getting violently drunk, by fighting, and by cutting the proprietor of the Star restaurant. Unfortunately; however, this latter proceeding could not be actually proved upon him and consequently upon his trial the next day, he was not "scrunched" as he deserved to be.

APPOINTMENT—Hon. Edward Evey, of Fairview, has been appointed
The Los Angeles Herald publishes as an item of local news that certain gentlemen from Boston, New York and Philadelphia, mentioning their names, have arrived at Anaheim. Were such arrivals rare in their occurrence we should certainly have made them a subject of remark; but our hotel registers have recorded the names of between fifty and one hundred arrivals from these and other Eastern cities in every week during the past two or three months.
Among the many new buildings, which are now in process of erection, we have often heard of Mr. Reiser's brewery, but had not the slightest idea what a mammoth concern it will be, until passing in that vicinity a few days ago. Our idea of the building had been before that time that it was something a little better than provincial, but the real fact is that the building would do San Francisco credit in size, capacity and general internal arrangements for brewing.
There came off the other day in San Juan Criptrano a good old-fashioned California law-suit. The matter in dispute was a little piece of public land, situated near the village; and the court was held in a sequestered valley, immediately beneath the shadow of the old mission Church, and called since the occurrence of which we speak "Bloody Gulch." Armed each with a little hatchet, and drunk with rage, they essayed a settlement by knocking out each other's brains. It is needless to mention their non-success; for, in the first place, their points of law were not well taken; and in the second, they had no brains.
APPOINTMENT.—Hon. Edward Evey, of Fairview, has been appointed District Deputy of the Patrons of Husbandry for the southern portion of the Los Angeles District by J. M. Hamilton, Master of the State Grange.
