[From the Commercial Herald.] SAN FRANCISCO MARKET. FLOUR—The market continues dull and inactive. The Vallejo Stair Mills and other not yet running on full time; millions in general not disposed to stock up at present rates for Wham, but some few of them show a desire to sell "shoot," by making contracts for future delivery as prices unwillingly very low for Extra. Sales of Baker's Extra for November delivery have been concluded to the extent of 14,000 bbls in all at $4,695.40 @ 125 ba. An offer to sell is out and now pending for 20,000 bbls Standard Extra for delivery in January, February, and March, but the sales are not yet concluded. Oregon continues to send us of her old stock: the John L. Stephens brought down 179 hf add and 855 qr sks. Expirta for the wash include 1,200 qr and 200 hf sks to Honekula per D. C. Murray; to Central America per atamanship Mohenge, 2,602 qr and 200 hf sks; to Japan per atamanship China, the bulk of 118 bbls, and to Hong Kong by name, 72 bbls, 438 hf sks, and 14,545 qr sks, equal to 3,828 bbls, chiefly Superior. We note sales of 1,200 bbls Superficial for export at $39; standard brands rule from $4,295.40 @ 125 ba.; Extrema, $4,765; Golden Age and Golden Gate Extra silk dressed command $61.25. WHEAT—The arrivals seem to be of late rather more free; nevertheless, we have a very light stock in city warehouses. A year ago at this date, not less than 50,000 tons were here in store; now we have less than 19,000 tons — some may say 3,000 tons—the farmers still refusing to market their grain freely. It is true some continue to export of their abundance, but the mass of producers are ref withholding their grain from market. Immense piles of Wheat, mere of ground covered over with stacks of Wheat, cured up, exposed to the elements, and much of it hundreds of miles inland and as points difficult of access. The facility with which some of the farmers are enabled to obtain cash advances upon their grain warehouse in land is a great inducement for them to borrow, hoping that by and by the turn of the market will be in their favor. The lowest point yet reached the present season in Liverpool is 7d for spot parcels. At date, 1874, the quotation shows an improvement — say 1896/1906 d for average, and for club, lbm 45/11a 3d etl; 1872, September 9th, the quotation was lbm 116/11a for average, and lbm 3d/11a d for club; 1872, September 9th, lbm 56/11a d. Transactions for the week include 3,800 tons average to arrive at $19; 15-600 bbls choice milling; $15: 19-500 bbls for export; $19: 8,600 bbls "fall" quality; $14: 8,500 bbls "mixed." $19: 45 bbls "fall" quality; $14: 8,500 bbls "mixed." At the close there is rather more inquiry for choice milling, and for this $1 would be paid for a moderate quantity. Purchases inland are made at a price equivalent to $15. Delivered alongside ship. The Panillao for Callao carries 12-216 cts. BARLEY—We note the shipment of 9,600 etls Chevalier to Melbourne per Queen Emma. The Chocolata for Anck land carriages 8,422 etls same. Coast supplies come to hand very freely, finding ready sale at current rates. The quality much better than heretofore, while the crop proves to be far greater than in previous years. Sales for the week include 1,200 etls choice old Brewing at $14/61 @ 12%; 2,600 etls bright Feed. $17/61 @ 19%; 1,500 etls Coast. $10/61 @ 19%. Prime new crop Brewing is more called for, but the offerings are light, being held at $12%. OATS—The market continues without animation. The John L. Stephens from Oregon brought us only 1,677 etls. Sales for the week include 4,500 etls in lots within the range of $14/61 @ 15% ettl. RYE—The crop is large, but is generally withheld, owing to the low rates offered. 500 ska sold at $18/61 @ 15% ettl. OURN—The old stock is well nigh exhausted, selling at $17/61 @ 15% ettl in small lots. SEKDS—The Whistler from Valparaiso brought up 4,000 bags for the Oil Mill, justable at $3e. It is strange that so little attention is given to the raising of Flax and Flax- "The Dog of Montargis." Apropos of the present controversy as to the reality of a recent combat between a man and a dog near Birmingham, many of our readers who have stopped at Montargis, on the route from Paris to Lyons, will remember the story of "The Dog of Montargis," who fought with the murderer or his master and avenged his blood. In the great hall of that town, before its demolition, there was a fresco painting over the fireplace representing the strange duel, which was fought, according to tradition, in the presence of Charles VI., in the lists of the Ile de Notre Dame at Paris. The story is told at length in Memoires sur les Duels. It runs as follows: One day Abbrey de Mont Didier, a gentleman or birth and influence, was journeying alone through the lonely forests of Bondy, when he was attacked by robbers and killed, his body being buried by the assassins under a tree hard by the spot where he fell. For some days an English bloodhound which he had with him kept watch over his grave till compelled by hunger to quit his post. On this dog made his way to the house of a friend of the deceased gentleman at Paris, where the strangeness of his manner, coupled with the fact of his having come back without his master, roused much curiosity and wonder. As soon as he had been fed he kept running toward the door of the house and then back to his master's friend, pulling him by the sleeve, and used all sorts of dumb eloquence as if he wanted him to follow. At last the friend resolved to follow the lead of the dog, who made his way to the forest and went straight to the foot of the tree where his murdered master lay. Here the dog began to howl piteously, scratching up the earth with his paws, and showing his wish that the place should be dug out. Upon digging a few feet the friend and his companions came upon the body of M. Mont Didier, bearing the wounds which had been inflicted upon it by the knife of the murderer. For some time, however, no trace of the actual assassin could be found. THE NINTH INDUCTION WOODWORTH Mammale Temple, THE FINE EXAMINATION An Elegant Display of Standards This Pioneer Piano has finished in 1862, and has in this line since that time been conducting their business honorably basis have gone reputation. THE GOODYEAR The Largest Rubbob WAREHOUSE JOSEPH FRANK This company has Chicago, St. Louis, and Australia. It is said that the division Hope revolutionized very freely, finding ready sale at current rates. The quality much better than in previous years. Sales for the week include 1,200 sts choice old Brewing at $1,200; 20 days: 300 sks Chevalier sold at $1,400; 2,500 sks bright Feed, $1,675; 19: 1,500 sks Coast, $1,875; Prime new crop Brewing is more called for, but the offerings are light, being held at $12. BYE—The crop is large, but is generally withheld, owing to the low rates offered. 500 sas sold at $1,875; 61 ctt. OGEN—The old stock is well nigh exhausted, selling at $1,161; 85 ctt in small lots. SEEDS—The Whistler from Valparaiso brought up 4,000 bags for the Oil Mill, quotable at $3e. It is strange that so little attention is given to the raising of Flax and Flaxseed upon this Coast and in Oregon. The ship Granger from Valparaiso brought 30 sks of Caraway Seed. Alfalfa Seed is now in request at 12¢c. We note the sale of 2,000 sks Timothy Seed at 10¢c. We are pleased to learn that the Pacific Cordage Company has been successful in raising 250 tons Hemp the present season across the bay in Alabama County. Mustard Seed continues in good condition, good to choices Brown and Red commanding 2¢e; White, 1¢e; 2¢e. TALLOW—The market continues strong, with sales of 8,000 he grade at 7¢e; 3,000 ba choice, 8c. Refined for machinery is held at 9¢e. BEAN AND MIDDLINGS—The mill price for the farmer is $17, the latter $27 per ton. BEANS—There is very little demand at present. We quote Bayos, 26¢e; Pink, 13¢e; Red, 1¢e; new White Pea, 27¢e. OIL CAKE MEAL—The mill price is $22.50, less 19 per cent to the trade. HOPES—The California crop is coming forward rapidly, and is of the usual superior quality. Probably two-thirds of the crop was sold to speculators before it was picked. At prices ranging from 28¢c to 29¢c; then advancing to 27¢c; then advancing to 22¢c; and to those who have not yet sold. It is a matter of some importance to know whether this figure is likely to be maintained or go higher, and any information bearing upon the subject is of interest. In England the crop is poor. The prospect on the continent, as reported by a reliable authority, is conflicting. The latest accounts from the Hop districts of New York and Wisconsin indicate that a fair crop will be gathered. This fact, however, will have but little effect on the market, as even in a good season the United States imports from 15,000 to 29,000 bales. Offers have been made to sell Oregon at 27¢c; but declined: 300 seems to be the limit for the best California and Oregon. We hear of two car-loads being shipped East from Sacramento. HAY—Supplies are liberal. Common slow of sale at $8 (10); good to choice commands $12 (14) ton. WOOL—The steamship Arizona for New York, via Panama, carried on the 9th inst., 7,817 bs. The receipts of Fall clip are quite light up to date. And buyers are picking up all desirable parcels as they come in Prices are hardening. Arrivals so far have made an active trade for best clips at 19¢c for bright choice lots. Much of the Wool arriving is heavy and dirty, and this kind meets dull sale at 13¢lsc; burry, 12¢lsc and dull. We meet a sale of 40,000 bs extra choice Oregon at 33¢c; an extreme price. Sales for the week, 233,000 bs. HIDES—The market is strong for Dry at 19¢coc and 26¢c for slaughterers' stock, usual selections; 6,000 bs Wet Salted sold at 8¢coc. POULTRY—Supplies are very liberal and the demand good. We quote Hens and Roosters; $66 lbs. Broilers; $33 lbs. Tame Ducks; $66 lbs. Tame Geese; $12 lbs. Tare turkeys scarce at 20¢lscob; Hare; $27 lbs. dozen and slow of sale; Venison is scarce at 18¢lscob. OATTLE—Meats of all descriptions plentiful and cheap; quality excellent. Slaughterer's prices are: Beef, quarter first quality, second quality, third quality. Mutton is plentiful at 4¢lsc. Spring Lamb, 6½lb. Calres are scarce at 6½lb. DAIRY PRODUCTS—New York State Cheese is jobbing at 16¾lb; Western Reserve, 13½lb. Receipts of Oregon Butter vary light, selling at 24¾lb according to quality. Choles Fresh Roll Butter has now advanced to 23¾lb; Point Berena, 46 lb.; California key and pickled Roll is in demand at current rates, say 20¾lb for Firkin, and 22¾lb for pickled Roll. Western Reserve is jobbing slowly at 22¾lb; the latter for extra choice firkin. California Cheese is in good stock, selling at 11½lb. Fresh California Eggs friend resolved to follow the lead of the dog, who made his way to the forest and went straight to the foot of the tree where his murdered master lay. Here the dog began to how piteously scratching up the earth with his paws, and showing his wish that the place should be dug out. Upon digging a few feet the friend and his companions came upon the body of M. Mont Didier, bearing the wounds which had been inflicted upon it by the knife of the murderer. For some time, however, no trace of the actual assassin could be found, till one day the dog met in the streets of Paris a certain Chevalier named Macaire, whom he instantly tried to seize by the throat with great fury. This strange conduct on the part of a quiet and peaceful animal was repeated on a second occasion, and, as it was known that Macaire had been a personal enemy of Mont Didier, grave suspicions began to be aroused. At length the affair reached the ears of King, who, being anxious that the matter should be thoroughly sifted, sent for Macaire, and also for the dog who was gentle and playful until he scented Macaire in the crowd of courtiers standing around the King, when as usual, he showed the fiercest hostility toward him. Struck by such an undesigned piece of circumstantial evidence, the King at once ordered that the decision should be referred to the trial by battle, or "appeal to the judgment of God," and a combat was ordered to be held between the Chevalier and the dog in the Ile de Notre Dame, which was then almost an open space. The terms of the encounter were that the dog was into have an empty cask to retreat into after he had made his springs at his foe, while the man was allowed a cudgel by way of arms. Everything was prepared for the duel when the dog no sooner found himself free and face to face with his antagonist than he began running round and round Macaire, avoiding his blows, until at last he seized him fairly by the throat, and after a severe struggle succeeded in laying him prostrate on the ground. The Chevalier was rescued from the dog's grip by the bystanders, and conscience-streken,在the presence of the King, his court, andthe rest ofthe spectators, theacknowledgedhisguilt.A few daysafterwardheexplainedhiscrimeuponthescaffold.The"DogofMontargis"iswellknowntaleinFrancewhereitsubstantialtruthisnotdoubted,andhasbeenwebelieve,thesubjectofatleastonepopulardrama. HONEY—The supply is very considerable, and prices extremely low. Within a few years the business of bee keeping has made rapid progress in this State, and the product of Honey now far exceeds the quantity required for home consumption. Shipments to the East were inaugurated last season; but a much larger quantity will go forward this year. Drake & Emerson dispatched a carload of Marlison’s Comb Honey, for New York, and will soon send forward two car-loads of strained. This is the fourth car-load that has already gone forward, and several more are yet to follow. This Honey will not suffer from a comparison with the best produced in the Eastern States. In fact, that made from the white sage in the mountains of San Diego, Los Angeles and other counties, is fully equal to the best white clover Honey of the East. We quote choices white comb, in frames, 18½to.; do dark, 6½to.; asmined, 9½to. HERSWAX—Quint at 23½to. FRUIT—The market is very plentifully supplied with choice varieties of Pearn, Peachn, Pluma, etc. A few Strawberries of the third amp, also Figs, etc., are now upon the stands for sale. Dried Fruits by the Alden evaporating process are now attracting considerable attention. The immense saving in freight in transporting these goods to distant points is worthy of careful consideration. To illuminate: One case of Alden Onions, weighing 58 lb gross, is equivalent for all culinary purposes to 509 lb or 5 bags of fresh. Then again: One case of Alden Pean, weighing gross 43 lb, is equivalent to and will go as far in family use as 7 cases of Omanad Pean weighing 209 lb. The same rule will apply to all the Fruits and Vegetables prepared We quote current rates for the leading articles as follows: Apples, cooking, 65½to; box; choice, 750½to. Plums, 750½to. A Productive Quercusilver Mine—The Napa Register learns that the last month’s run of the Redington Quicksilver Mine amounted to 6000 saws. This was the production of two furnaces, the old furnaces being in course of demolition to make room for two others that are to be smashed on a much modified plan of the Superintendent, and for which 600,000 brushes are already prepared and on the ground. Only 125 men were employed during the month, and we are certain that Job speaks ahead of the monthly return of either he New Jersey or the Almaden mines. A few words of advice to people contemplating suicide. In the first place—don’t. In the second place, if you insist upon it, take yourself off with as little display and as much regard for other people’s feelings as possible. Don’t write cruel or mawkish letters which can only wring the hearts of those you leave behind you. Remembr that it is not at all an honorable or a heroic thing to take your own life and that while it may require a certain degree of animal courage, it is courage of the baser sort. Dismiss from your mind all anticipation of the sensation your exit is to create and the talk there will be about it in the newspapers. You will not be here to witness the commotion you make, if there is any, and in the land where you stand an excellent chance of going there are no newspapers, or if there are any, there is a Poland law perpetually in force. If you persist in going about tired of life and complaining that nobody loves you, your best way of managing the final catastrophe will be to make it appear that somebody got desperate at your nonsense and drowned you in self-defense, or disposed of you in some way with any convenient firearm. If you are sincere in your wish to ford the Styx, this will accomplish your purpose, and the effect on the public mind will be much healthier than if you had paid epistolary farewells to all the world and shuffled off after the stereotyped fashion.—N.Y.Tribune. Scene, an astronomical class. Student (logitur)—“Professor, when yo speak to us of the limbs of the sun and the moon, which are we to understand that they are arms, or legs?” Professor—“We have Scriptural warrant for supposing them to be legs. An Elegant Display of Planes and Organs of Standard Makes. This Pioneer Piano and Organ House was established in 1862, and has been the leading house in this line since that time. They have ever kept the best made and most durable instruments, and conducting their business on the most liberal and honorable basis have fully maintained their high reputation. Their display at the Mechanics' Fair is second to none in that line. They exhibit an elegant and powerful Concert Grand and Upright Piano, from the famous manufactory of SCHOMACKER, Philadelphia. One striking evidence of the superiority of these pianos over all others is the fact that, during the last three administrations, the Schomacker has been selected by the best musical talent in the country for the Executive Mansion. The HENRY F. MILLER Piano, recently introduced by this firm, are attracting marked attention. They are unrivaled for beautiful and pleasing qualities of tone, delicacy and perfectness of action, elegance of finish throughout, and great durability, the most important feature of a piano. A Square Grand Henry F. Miller Piano was recently tuned by our veteran piano forte maker, Mr. Jacob Zech, who unhesitatingly pronounced it the finest Piano he ever tuned in San Francisco. These popular instruments have already taken the first position at home and throughout the country, and are acknowledged as standing at the head of the best Pianos now made. They also have on exhibition two very fine Square Pianos, Meares GROVESTERN & FULLER makers, New York, which they offer at very low prices, and which are recommended as the best medium-priced instrument in the market. The TAYLOR & PARLEY Parlor and Church Organs exhibited by this firm are well worth a careful inspection. For beauty of design and finish they are not excelled. They have many new and valuable additions, and in tone and quality are equal, if not superior to any and all others. Those about purchasing should not do so without first examining their large stock of instruments at their warerooms. THE GOODYEAR RUBBER COMPANY. The Largest Rubber House in the World. Warehouse 607 Market St. San Francisco. JOSEPH FRASER, AGENT. This company have agencies in New York, Chicago, St. Louis, London, Liverpool, Paris, and Australia. It is said that the discovery of the Cape of Good Hope revolutionized the commerce of the world; and now it may as truly be said that the Good-year invention has made a change no less extensive in the mercantile world. Of the 450 different articles manufactured by this company, fully one-third were entirely unknown a few years ago, and the remainder were manufactured from expensive materials, such as gold, silver, ivory, leather, etc. At the Mechanics' Fair, various firms in the city have made a good display. One shows nice furniture, another carriage, another pictures and engravings, but no other firm can show such a variety of articles both useful and ornamental. To give country readers some idea of the uses to which rubber is put, we will mention a few articles under each department, and price lists will be sent to any address on application to the agent: In the Clothing Department, we notice capes, coats, overalls, hats, caps, camp blankets, life preservers, ladies' gloves for gardening and house work, gents' heavy driving gloves, boots and shoes of all kinds and sizes; also, Arctic gaiters, Arctic overshoes, and pants with boots for lumbermen and fishermen. They are sole manufacturers of Shepard's Rubber Boots with leather soles, made expressly for miners' use, one of the most durable and serviceable articles ever made. The Fancy Goods Department is well represented but we can mention only a few articles. All kinds of combs, hair pins, hair brushes, napkin rings, tumblers, corkscrews, gimlets, timbles, buttons, canes, balls, match boxes, dolls, and rattles. The lovers of tobacco have not been slighted; various kinds of pipes, tobacco pouches, etc., may be seen. Hardware Department—Door mats, car springs and wagon springs, elastic head screws, curry combs, rubber pails, etc. Stationers' Department—Elastic rings, pocket inkstands, pen holders, Pencils, ink erasers, rulers, round and flat. Besides there is the Saddlery Department, Toy Department, Druggists' Department, and Rubber Belting,Packing, and Hose Department, and to enumerate and describe the scores of articles under each heading would require a whole newspaper. The agent announces that all of these articles will be sold at factory prices, and every dealer in the country towns will find it for his interest to send to Mr. Fraser for a complete catalogue of rubber goods, with prices annexed. Dr. R. V.
