SAN FRANCISCO MARKET.
The general holding trade of the city is unusually good for wholesale tobacco. The business transmitted by the whiskey Johns during the months of July was up to the fall and ended at July pinnum. The largest traffic shows no activity between families for turn, so elsewhere, there is a very marked indifference manifested by merchandise and traders to enter into distributions of any kind. The business dealing in tobacco is entirely legitimate, transactions in goods and merchandise supplied to the actual mansue of the trade. We are very little dispositions shown to buy up even staple goods all mean student with purchasing Cotton, Hemp, Tea, Milk, Tobacco, Providence, etc., in quantities only sufficient to keep up full amorted stocks without resorting to any large expenditure. This sea, is the face of my money market, and at low rates of interest, to the borrower, having either ill-advised paper to offer or good collateral. It is very sure that money ever becomes so plentiful on the Pacific slope as now, and certainly interms never was so low.
The American Snort and New York Shipping List, of July 21d and July 23d publish a singular letter emanating from several wholesale grocers and importers of tins in this city, complaining of the sake of the Pacific Mail Branchship Company's agents in China and Japan, fearing to bring their new Tens to this cash on time, and giving a preference towards shipping to the Atlantic via Panama. The edition of the former paper exhibited the eldest before publishing it to Mr. Hatch of the Pacific Mail Branchship Company, and he gives a very curt, positive, sweeping detail of the whole story. Our merchants are dispensed to defend them against from these sweeping assertions, and will send to the Grover their reply, covering azimuths from diverse letters from Yokohama, etc.,曼inating from ten houses in high repute, which fully establish the original charge. Of course there are technical loop-holes for the P. M. S. S. On to crawl out of; nevertheless it is a well known and admitted fact that the agents of the Pacific Mail Company in Yokohama did refuse to take Tens for our merchants on certain steamers, fearing that they would be forwarded overland by the Central Pacific Railroad to Eastern houses, and thus more or less of their Lithom trade diverted to the shorter and quicker route across the continent. We have seen this correspondence, and read it all from its inscipiency. The first error made was in sending it East without any signature attached. However, the document refutes Mr. Hatch's assertions goes forward by mail with those deficiencies made good, and accompanied with copies of all the correspondence upon the subject. The very face of the German steamer Allona bringing upward of 4,000 pigs new Japanese Tens originally intended for the Pacific Mail steamers is evidence of injunction done to California houses.
FLOUR—Our monthly exports of Flour by sea for July, 1874, are as follows: 34,708 bbls, valued at $177,660; July, 1873, 29,000 bbls, valued at $197,650. The export demand is light; and millers both here and in the interior, are measurably late, having scarcely made a beginning on the new Wheat. We are in receipt of further supplies from Oregon. The Ajax bringing 81 hf, and 1,241 qr skn. The Idaho brought 4,211 qr skn. The Starr Mills, Valfo, is running as usual, but will soon double its working capacity, and then be better enabled to execute export orders. The Golden Age and Golden Gate Mills both continue to do a prosperous business. The local trade for Baker and Family Extra is good at very fall figures. Superfine of various grades sells at $649.50; Extra Superior fine, $475; Baker and Family Extra, $595.50. The best brands made on this coast sell in small jobbing lots, for family use, at $376.80 $180 bs., all in hf and qr skn.
WHEAT—Our monthly exports of Wheat by sea for July, 1874 were 282,150 etls, valued at $474,084; same time, 1872,211 etls, valued at $500,118. The receipts are very light, and the bulk of it goes into store for a future market.
Bascomb's Baby.
She brought it over to our house, Mrs. Bascomb did. It was their first—a wee, little, red faced, red headed, pug nosed, howling infant. It was one of the hotest days in July, but she had it wrapped up in three shawls and a bed-quilt, and was in agony every moment for fear it would mense.
"Do see his darling, darling little face!" she said to me; as she unwound him about forty times and looked to see which end his feet were on. I looked. I have been the father of eleven just such howling little wopsies, and I didn't see anything remarkable about Bascomb's baby.
"See those eyes, that firmness of mouth, that temper in his look!" she went on. I saw them. The little imp began to get red in the face and beat the air, and his mother shouted:
"He's being murdered by a pin!"
She turned him wrong end up, laid him on his face; then on his back, loosened his bands, rubbed the soles of his feet, and the tears stood in her eyes as she solemnly remarked:
"I know he wont live—he's too smart!"
The child recovered, and as he lay on his back across her knees and surveyed the ceiling, she went on:
"Such a head! Why, every one who sees him says that he is going to be a Beecher, a Greeley, or a Bismarck; do you notice that high forehead?"
I did. I thought he was all forehead, as his hair didn't commence to grow until the back of his neck was reached, but she assured me that I was mistaken.
Wouldn't I just heft him once? I hefted him. I told her I never saw a child of his weight weigh so much, and she smiled like an angel; she said that she was afraid I didn't appreciate children, but now she knew I did.
Wouldn't I just look at his darling little feet—his little red feet and cunning toes? Yes, I would. She rolled him over on his face and unwound his feet and triumphantly held them up to my gaze. I contemplated the hundreds of little wrinkles running lengthwise and crosswise, the big toes and the little toes, and I agreed with her that, so much action to the right of such corporate business in as case and design ultimately or company State of California.

A New York company will insure poodle dogs, but won't take a cow's risk on babies. They know which receives the most care.
"Quid Pro Quo."—Mr. Greeley was not more opposed to "having something for nothing" than was Mr. Sumner. He was constantly desirous to make a return for whatever he received. If an author presented him with his book; if an engraver sent him a proof of his last picture, he made haste to acknowledge the courtesy by a letter which could be, and generally was published. But no one could venture even upon his friendship to present to the Senator any article of value, as he would decline to receive it unless he were permitted to return its money value. This peculiarity was noticeable in the most trifling matters. Did he chance to share a carriage with another, he would insist on sharing the expense. Did a friend pay the fare of both in the street-car, he insisted on repaying the half-dime. He may have been so far educated in the European custom in such matters that it had become a habit with him. It was evident that he did not know he was singular in this, as he spoke of it as odd that others should make it difficult for him to do as he desired. In one case, when he had gone some distance to speak in a doubtful district, by invitation of a member whose re-election was pending, and was entertained at the member's house, he persisted in paying his part of the expense of the carriage to the depot; and when his friend refused to receive from him the amount paid for the railroad ticket he procured for the Senator in advance, Mr. Sumner returned him the price of it by post the next day."—Scribner's for August.
Said an old gentleman to Miss Phoebe Cousins: "I wish you would give up this foolish notion of running about to lecture, and settle down, have a husband, and be a good housekeeper." Miss Cousins replied: "Barkis is willing; but where's your man."

TO THE PUBLIC. In view of the antitrust burden of certain insurance Corporation and their actions in relation to the Insurance Laws of this State, as amended at the last meeting of our Legislature, so also termed every one in any wise instrumental in producing these amendments. Any act, statement, representation, or agreement, done or made by an agent so appointed and designated, will be deemed to be the property of such corporation or company, shall be deemed the act, statement, representation, or agreement of the principal, and shall have the same force and effect as if done or made by the principal. Any such foreign corporation or company shall II., as a further condition precedent to the transaction of insurance business in this State, and in consideration of the privilege to transfer insurance business to any other person or company, shall be deemed in lieu with the Insurance Commissioner an agreement or stipulation, executed by the proper authorities of such corporation or company, in form and substance as follows: "The (giving name of corporation or company) does hereby stipulate and agree that, in consultation of the permission granted by the State of California to it to transact insurance business in that State, that such corporation or company) and any citizen of the State of California the Courts of said State shall have and maintain exclusive jurisdiction of such litigation. WAKELEE'S PATENTED
Granulated Squirrel Exterminator,
A New and Meat Destructive Poison for the Worst Peat of California.
For years the farmers of the Pacific Coast have been spending money in experimenting to find a safe, cheap, and efficient way of ridding their grain fields of their worst enemy, the squirrel. LA, which destroys Millions of Dollars' worth of grain every year, and unless a strong and good man-made machine is used to kill them, they will become more numerous every year.
Wakelee's Granulated Squirrel Exterminator is just the thing the farmers of California have been looking for. It is sure death. One or two grains of it will kill a squirrel so quick that if it is five feet from its hole it dies before it gets there. The Poison is put up bask and in granular form, and easily handled; in one pound and all per pound. It goes down to fifteen grains of it are sufficient to place at each hole. Also successfully used for killing Gophers and Rats. It has been thoroughly tested in different parts of the country, and gave universal satisfaction.
