SAN FRANCISCO MARKET.
The Am. ship Black Hawk for New York has called for her destination with a valuable cargo of native products, including 228,700 lb Wool, 9,729 Hides, 2,755 bison Case Doodle (Bruton), 2,000 cows Salamander, 5,000 pigs Dolly's Reindeer and Land, 11 bales Hagen, 20,000 gals Golden Syrup, etc., the whale raised at upward of $200,000. Business as this writing is not so active as usual at this season of the year. The grain harvest seems to be later than normal and conflicting elements return its prompt movement. The spring Wool slip has nearly all been marketed. Hides and Tallow continue in active request. The Grape and Hop crops propete are very encouraging.
FLOUR—The demand for export is fully equal to the supply, for the reason that millers, both here and at Sacramento, find it difficult to process all the Whens required to keep their mills running. We note the receipt of 16,000 qrs Prairie Mills from Sacramento, bought some time minutes for export. The Yanco de Gama milled on the 22d lint, for China and Japan, carrying to Hecking 15,200 qrs Superfine. The Ocean Keeper for Cape Town carried 7,000 hs sks and 2,800 qrs sks. The Alaska For Hecking carried 182 bbls Extra, 40 hfs and 5,811 qrs Skis Superfine; also the Yokohama the bulk of 500 bbls. The Ann Dethlef for Queenstown carried 1,149 qrs Skis. The Starr Mills, Vallejo, is running an annual bid will soon double its working capacity and then be better enabled to execute export or demand. The Golden Age and Golden fist Mills both continue to do a prosperous business. The local trade for Baker and Family Extra is good at very full futures. Superior of various grades mills at $644.80; Extra Superfine, $475; Baker and Family Extra, $366.36; $196 bs. The best brands made on this coast sell in small jobbing lots at $5 25/6¢; $186 bs. all in hf and qrs sks.
WHEAT—The receipts continue light, many farmers holding back, preferring to store island; others are arranging to ship their crops upon their own account, which will in part explain the light sales we have to record. Transactions for the week under review include 5,800 sks choice at $16 for new; 1,500 sks old for milling at $16 75/6¢; 70:3,000 sks new; $16 80:3,000 sks ditto; $16 60:3,000 sks new; $16 55:3,000 sks new; $16 54:3,000 sks new; $16 53:3,000 sks new; $16 52:3,000 sks new; $16 51:3,000 sks new; $16 50:3,000 sks new; $16 49:3,000 sks new; $16 48:3,000 sks new; $16 47:3,000 sks new; $16 46:3,000 sks new; $16 45:3,000 sks new; $16 44:3,000 sks new; $16 43:3,000 sks new; $16 42:3,000 sks new; $16 41:3,000 sks new; $16 40:3,000 sks new; $16 39:3,000 sks new; $16 38:3,000 sks new; $16 37:3,000 sks new; $16 36:3,000 sks new; $16 35:3,000 sks new; $16 34:3,000 sks new; $16 33:3,000 sks new; $16 32:3,000 sks new; $16 31:3,
REV.—Oh, certainly.
Mol.—Wasn't it the soap and wather made the linen clane, sir?
Rev.Of course they did.
Mol.—And isn't the linen all the better for it?
Rev.—Oh, no doubt of that, Molly.
Mol.—But not a dhrop of the soap and wather stays in it. Well, sir, it's the same thing wid me. Not a word o' the sarmint stays in me—I suppose it all dhries out o' me—but I'm the better and the claner for it, when it's over, for all that.
CONFLICT WITH A BURGLAR.—The Melbourne Argus gives the following account of the attempted robbery of the residence of the United States Consul: An instance of most determined courage in arresting a burglar was shown at an early hour on Sunday morning, by Master Joseph Wright-Adamson, son of Mr. Thomas Adamson, the American Consul, living in Hotham Street, East Melbourne. Shortly after four o'clock or Sunday morning, Master Adamson was awakened by hearing some person moving in his bedroom. He got up and seized the intruder, who proved to be a colored man named Thomas Webb, an American, from New York City, who came out as cook in the American ship A. M. Minott. A sharp struggle took place, and young Adamson was thrown down the stairs to the first landing. Nothing daunted, however, he again seized the burglar, and was thrown to the bottom of the stairs. The burglar than ran toward the back door, but in the darkness mistook his way, and came back again, when young Adamson again seized him, and this time got him down, and held him till his father came to his assistance. A rope was procured, and the man was tied to the banisters till a constable was found, to whom he was given in charge. The burglar was convicted on Friday, May 1. The pluck shown by Master Adamson, who is only about 16 years of age, in attacking an antagonist so superior in strength and weight, is worthy of the highest commendation.
QUIET PEOPLE.—Quiet people seldom get full justice done them, except by their immediate friends. It is your noisy, rackety folks who secure most of the world's ready acclamation. The man who talks commonplaces at the top of his voice, who is in the habit of perpetrating preposterous jokes, and laughing consumedly at the same, and who makes a point of thrusting himself into conversations, whether he understands them or not, runs a much better chance of being dubbed a clever fellow than does he who rarely speaks unless he is thoroughly au fait with his subject, and who is addicted to advancing his opinions in a hesitating, timid window area.
It would be a Hawley, Bowery decent-sized month at least in every variety of prices from price range to price range lighted by the Central Tail.

HOPS—There is nothing doing on this side of the continent at present. The crop is, however, very promising both here and in Oregon. Emmet Wells' New York Circular of July 16th says:
Our market is quite. Brewers are buying in small lots of from 5 to 18 bales as a time, while dealers are afraid to operate even on this comparatively slow line and desire to buy except on order, and when out of stock. The supply of good Hope is small, yet buyers experience no difficulty in selling themselves in quality, and there is a growing enthusiasm on the part of holders to upload, in view of the flattering prospectors and bear approach of the new concession in price hire which may resort to this week in order to affect quick sales. On the whole, we think the market at this writing shows signs of weakness, and only for the less encouraging reports which reach from the growing districts to-day; prices might decline. The late heavy rains throughout New York State have somewhat checked the arrival our processes, and lies have made their appearance in the jail on August County. Unless we have a drier season during August, thequality of our Hops will be much impaired by mold Price of California, 25c to 35c.

From our own orchards the receipts of assorted fruits are moderately large, while the demand is good for all choice varieties. Blackberries are coming forward freshly. This season large quantities of Bartlett Pearls are going East by rail a portion of the crop on Sacramento River and in the vicinity of Sacramento City had been secured for that purpose. Professor Blanc of London, has been experimenting with a flying machine, and on the 9th of July his experiments came to a close. He attempted to fly from a balloon to the earth. After rising a short distance, the professor was lowered, and being suspended from the balloon by a rope with the wings of a flying machine extended, the balloon ascended to a considerable height, and at a signal the rope was cut, and the professor descended with frightful velocity to the ground, and was killed.
A late British review, speaking of a sermon from a young curate, says:
"The sermon was one of those lithographed compositions supplied to the clergy at ten shillings and six pence per dozen. In country parishes these form the chief part of the teaching the clergy give their hearers, and the use of them is rapidly destroying what little life and reality there is in the pulpits of the establishment."
NEW LAWN BOWEN.
A New town Memoirs Monkey, Hawen & Co., City of New York.
Situated at the outset of Polemor Center Market, being Mesh. 185 and 187 settler homes, stands the magnificent grocery store of Mennonah, Bowen & Co. This firm is the successor of C.J. Hawley & Co., which was established in the third edition in 1862. Mr. Hawley has had an aptness of twenty years in the grocery business, and his is the oldest established house in the city. Mr.C.R.Bowen, bornly of the firm of Bowen Brothers who commenced business in 1833 in Stockton, for the past seven years in business in Alamanda (during which he was not connected with the firm of Bowen Brothers)—joined Mr. Hawley, learning THE FREESTYFIRM.
Of Hawley, Bowen & Co., April 1, 1872. This record itself would be a sufficient evidence of stability. The present aspect of the firm on its building on Watter Street furnishes convincing proof of its prosperity.
THE NEW ESTABLISHMENT.
The first two things that would strike an observer on entering the store—which is 400 feet—are the position and fashion of the counters, and the gallery. The time honored but old ashamed counters running from one end of the store to the other have been entirely ignored by Mennonah, Bowen & Co., who have contented themselves with two short counters proper, one on each side of the store, of not more than twenty feet in length. But in addition to these, and as the great IN REVOLUTION ON THE ANCIENT ORDER OF THINGS,
Are five cross-counters placed at convenient positions in the store, and each piled up to the calling with the luxuries and necessaries of life. These counters each contain 20 drawers, making 180 in all, filled with every thing appertaining to the grocery business to be found in this and all foreign countries. This construction of counters answers a double purpose—it destroys the prism and harsh uniformity we have so long accustomed to, and at the same time allows the visitor a thorough and free examination of the entire stock.
NEXT, THE GALLERY.
The store being twenty-two feet from floor to ceiling, the architect has seized the opportunity afforded by this great height to run a gallery around three sides, some eight feet in depth, and as many more below the ceiling. This extra accommodation and store-room really gives the establishment a second story. Planking each side of the
IMPRESSIVE ENTRANCE.
Which is twenty feet wide, with a vestibule ten feet deep, are the enormous size windows, each large enough for a moderate-sized grocery store. In these windows are displayed with wonderful lavishness everything that bespeaks a land of plenty and comfort. To give an inventory of the stock inside would require A MONTH'S TIME.
It would be a much easier task to detail what Mennonah, Bowen & Co., have not gathered here. A very decent-sized army might find their rations here for a month at least. What Mennonah, Bowen & Co., are as proud as anything is the TEA AND COFFEE DEPARTMENT.
Consisting of a very large and well selected stock of fine teas. In this department is a full set of beautiful ornamental canisters of large size, made by the enterprising firm of Geo. H. Tay & Co., who may well feel proud of their work, which are filled with samples of every variety of teas known to the world, and ranging in price from 10 cents a pound up to $18. At night the store presents a particularly brilliant appearance, it being lighted by a series of refractors similar to those in the Central Tabernacle.
BETHESDA MINERAL SPRING WATER OF WAKEHAM, WI.
ANOTHER MANVELOUS CURE added to BETHESDA'S TRUMPH, as the following letter from K. Huddleston, a will known scholar, will permit:
Mennonah, DUNBAR & HENDRY, No. 22 master street, City Gentlemen: Permit me to give you a history of my experience with BETHESDA WATER. Now weeks ago I have gone out again. He applied; "I am quite sad." The other said: "But you did some time ago that every physician you had consulted had told you there was no help for you." "I did; but I found something at last that reaches my name. I am drinking BETHESDA WATER; have discontinued all other medicines, and I firmly believe my health will be restored."
I enquired the nature of her treatment and found it death from indigestion. I had been in the condition for years, and nothing but BETHESDA WATER ever helped me. I now feel like a new man and am well, and saw it all to BETHESDA WATER.

POISON! POISON!!
WAKELEE'S PATENTED Granulated Squirrel Exterminator,
A New and Most Destructive Poison for the Worst Post of California.
For years the farmers of the Pacific Coast have been spending money in experimenting to find a safe, cheap, and efficient way of tiddling their grain fields of their worst enemy, the squirrel. In which destroys Millions of Dollars' worth of grains every year; and unless a strong and command effort is made to kill them off, they will become more numerous every year.
Wakeleer's Granulated Squirrel Exterminator is just the thing the farmer of California uses for it. It can purge millions of grains if it kills a squirrel so quick that it is five feet from its hole it dies before it gets there. The Poison is put up day and in granular form and easily handled; in one pound tin, at 91 per pound. It goes a great way; as ten to fifteen grains of it are sufficient to place at each hole. Also successfully used for killing gliophora and Rata. It has been thoroughly leaved in different environments and gave us satisfactory results. It is kept and sold by druglers and dealers generally through the country. The following are some of my testimonials:
SANTA CLARA, April 20th, 1874.
H.P.Wakelee, Esq.: Your Squirrel Exterminator was used according to your directions on my Quito Farm with excellent success, and in my estimation just the thing the farmers want to kill their squirrel.
SAN LANDROSE, April 21st, 1874.
H.P.Wakelee, Esq.: Dear Sir: I have given your squirrel Exterminator a fair trial, and find it then an economical and very destructive preparation, and I can safely recommend it to our farmers.

In the matter of entences this store is particularly favored, for, in addition to the main entrance on Nutter Street, there are two archway leading into the market and a rear way extending into Post Street. Large-size elevators are on the front sidewalk and the back part of the premises.
Underneath the entire store extends a large basement, cool, clean, and airy. A well-prepared asphaltum pavement tends to keep everything in a state of perfect preservation. Here is piled the reserve stock of the wines, perceptions, etc. The remainder of this column might easily be filled with tattered old Messrs. Hawley, Bowen & Co.'s establishment, but enough has been written to show that they have a business place unequaled in point of convenience, splendor, and style by anything on the coast—S. F. A VOID FILLED.
Swain's Original Bakery and Ladies' Restaurant and Ice Cream Saloon.
One of the great necessities of San Francisco has been a restaurant or lunch-room, at once central and retired, which ladies unaccompanied by escort could patronize with freedom and comfort. This necessity has been supplied by the reopening of Swain's Original Bakery. Situated just one door below Peter's Center Market, on Sutter Street, it has the requisites of convenience and retirement in position, while the method of its management is all that can be desired in the matter of propriety and nice discrimination. There are no private rooms; there is no up-stairs.
The establishment has three divisions—the store, the restaurant, and the bakery. The store is 35x20 feet, and is neatly fitted up with counters, cases, shelves, and counting-house. Separated from the store by a screen of most tasteful and artificial workmanship (the design of which is by that of Mr. Swain's son, E.K. Swain, an architect with Davison's building). It is the restaurant and luncheon room, certainly the most elegant affair of its kind in the city. Everything from the handome carpet floor to the delicately tinted ceiling, di plays taste and refinement. Twenty marble-topped tables are placed at regular and convenient display. From the ceiling depend chandeliers of elaborate make, and hanging baskets full of drooping grasses and vivid bloom. The walls of the restaurant and store are of an uniform pale peach tint, while the countertops have a running treework of white, with a back ground painted furniture. The alive interior reflects furniture of the tables, and the gold beading that reflects the panel, cornice, and screen, the soft tint of the walla, the parti-colored carpet, and the bright dresses of the ladies present, repeat themselves in many mirrors until Swain's Original Bakery and a rainbow seem synonymous.
At the rear end of the lunch-room is a completely fitted up toilet, designed for the exclusive use of ladies and children. This is undoubtedly a great convenience, and one to which restaurant keepers have hitherto paid far too little attention.
Down stairs are the bakery, ice cream house, and attendant to the reporter lingerings not hot. The mysteries of cookery of the reporter lingerings not hot. All things that are seen—be here in great abundance, and in all states of transfusion, mixture and conglomeration. All these things in greater quantities occupied the large cool storeroom, while from the ice-cream room with a shiver, as though he had touched the North Pole.
For eighteen years Mr. Swain kept the Original Bakery, at the corner of Second and Natoma Streets, where he was avowed with a family business of the most extensive character. The greater part of this old custom Macdonald came him to his new and splendid establishment Sutter street, with the patronage he is sure to gain there, will assuredly build up Swain's Original Bakery into one of the largest and most flourishing establishments of San Francisco. It is conducted jointly by R.R.Swain and E.R.Bobinson as proprietor.
