FARM AND GARDEN.
WHY HIGH PRICED EGGS DO NOT HATCH.—High priced eggs do not although hatch, for we have tried them and know. We set two dozen under orthodox hens of amiable disposition, that knew how to stick to the nest, and did it for twenty-three consecutive days.
It wasn't the fault of the expressman,
for they did not come by express.
They were not old. We knew the yard where they were laid, and they were fresh eggs. There was a twelve-pound water with the hens that laid them.
And the result of the hatching was one thoroughbred Buff Cochin chick. Now, there are twenty reasons why they did not hatch—beginning with this, that the hens were kept confined in too small yards. We do not know what physiological laws are violated that hens kept in close confinement do not breed well. Perhaps it is because they are fowls of the air, and need a good deal of that article and plenty of mother earth to make them thrifty. The fact is pretty well established in the experience of poultrymen. There is no trouble of this kind with hens running at large. They steal their pests in hay mows, under the barn, under the shed, in the woods, in out-of-the-way places with no protection at all, and nearly every egg hatches until frost comes. But with the fancy breeds, as they are called, come small yards, that several varieties may be kept upon the same place, and here trouble begins. All sorts of causes are alleged for the failure of the eggs to hatch. The expressman is roundly abused. The breeder is dishonest. He may be only ignorant, and over-anxious to sell eggs at six dollars a dozen. If small yards are not a good reason for infertile eggs, we will bring forward the other nineteen. The moral is: It is safer to buy high priced eggs after seeing the fowls — Ex.

The Wyoming Soda Lakes.
Yesterday, in company with Mr. Chas. Pontez, N. K. Boswell, and M. C. Brown, we visited the soda lakes that lie between Laramie and Sheep Mountain, and, notwithstanding the reports that were in circulation concerning the extent of the deposit, its immensity was surprising to the analyst and the editor. The area of one lake was over sixty acres. The material which covers it resembles ice in appearance and solidity. There having been a fall of rain the night previous, an inch or more of water lay upon the incrusted lake, and this was so highly impregnated with soda as to be damaging to leather, and making a white spot wherever a drop of it touched the clothing. Holes have been dug four feet into this soda without reaching bottom, and it would certainly be safe to estimate its average depth at three feet. As it extends over an area of 100 acres, the amount of sulphate of soda may be easily computed. But, as this is derived from a constantly flowing spring, it is fair to presume that the quantity is simply inexhaustible.
Mr. Pontez thought that a furnace could be erected on the premises at a moderate expenditure, which would convert the crude sulphate of soda into a merchantable carbonate at $10 per ton, and this could be delivered in Chicago at $15, which would leave a handsome margin of $20 on each ton for a staple article of commerce, the demand for which is so great that its value would not be affected by this discovery.
About all of our soda comes from England, where it is manufactured from salt, being first converted into a sulphate of soda by the use of sulphuric acid. After all the processes are completed, it is then shipped to America, where a duty has to be paid, and a profit to the importer, and it is sold in New York at $45 per ton. Mr. Pontez has received numerous letters concerning the soda lakes of Wyoming, and on his return to Omaha he will first make an exact analysis of the soda, and then publish an account of the same in some

GRASSY WALKS.—After having been bothered for years by grass and weed-grown walks, I determined to conquer the enemy by a masterly surrender. I therefore spaded up all my walks, adding enough good soil to raise them to a level with the adjoining beds; raked and rolled them till they were firm and even, and then sowed them thickly with "mixed lawn grass seed," scratching it in with a rake, and giving a final going over with the rollar, and awaited the result. In a very few days (not over three weeks), I had the pleasure of walking on green velvet instead of gritty gravel; and with the help of a lawn mower, and an occasional cutting down of the edges true with a sharp spade, have had no further trouble with my walks. Always green and pleasant to the foot and eye, never washing, never weedy, never muddy, never wet (being 'above the garden level'), they are "a joy forever," and the perfection of garden walks.—The Cultivator.
CURE FOR CURRANT WORM.—By the following method I have successfully destroyed the currant worm: Spread from a gill to half a pint of carbolate of lime around the currant bush, near the stock; then jar off the worms. They will immediately attempt to return, but unless a branch touches the ground beyond the barrier, as a bridge for them, not a worm will get back, but they will perish in their attempts to pass through the lime. Care should be taken to obtain the article in its full strength, which can be bought for about 10 cents per pound by the 10 or 15 pounds. Much of the carbolate of lime sold for destroying insects is weakened by mixture with common air-slaked lime.
SALT COWS OFTEN.—Cows should have salt frequently, and regularly, at least twice a week in summer. A very good way is to have a tight box or trough placed where it will be protected from storms, and a quantity of salt kept in it all the time, and let the cows go to it every day and lick as they like. Cows should never be dogged to or from the pasture, and care should be taken not to over-drive them, but allow them to travel in their natural gait, especially when their bags are full, or in hot weather. Fast driving will not only lessen the quantity of milk, but will injure the quality of that which they will give. There is about twenty-five per cent difference in the quality of the milk delivered at factories from good

These lakes were accidentally discovered by John Le Fevre, three years ago, when out with a party of surveyors, but it was more than a year before he ascertained their value, when he caused a survey to be made, and erected a cabin on the rise of ground that is nearly surrounded by the series of lakes.—Laramie Independent.
AN ARMENIAN BRIDE.—Oliver Harper writes from Constantinople of an Armenian bride as follows: "She was covered with a most curious veil made of long strips of gold tinsel, which reached to her feet. Through this you could not see, except the bottom of her dress. The Armenian women are generally very pretty, but perfect fools in manners and expression; so much so that when one man wishes to offend another he says 'Pretty Armenian!' which really means a fool. The woman dress like Europeans, in general. The woman, after I had twice made the circuit of the veil, lifted it in front and separated the long strings of tinsel, till I could see that the bride was dressed in white silk, brocaded with silver and pearls, and that around her waist was a wide belt cotaining a fortune in precious stones. Her cheeks were painted a deep crimson, laid on in a heart shape, and another heart was artistically put on her chin, while the rest of the face was as white as the luminous cosmetic could bring it. The eyebrows met, and also stretched to the hair on each side of her temples, and were as black as they could be painted. The inside of her fingers' ends and her finger-nails were stained a deep crimson. Her hair, which was long and thick, though coarse, was braided full of little jingling coins. The outlines of her form were as usual, totally hidden by the clumsily made clothes. I admired her to her heart's content, and even went so far as to take up a fold of her dress to see if the pearls sewn on so lavishly were real ones, to the evident pleasure of all present; for what would be the height of ill-breeding among us is considered a delicate flattery among these women. I forgot to look at her feet, and was about to go and sit down,

The Laughing Plant. — In a work on Central and Eastern Arabia, by Mr. Palgrave, a plant is mentioned whose seeds produce effects similar to those of laughing gas. It is a native of Arabia. A dwarf variety of it is found at Kaseem, and another variety at Oman, which attains to a height of from three to four feet, with woody stems, wide-spreading branches and bright green foliage. Its flowers are produced in clusters, and are of a bright yellow color. The seed-pods are soft and woolly in texture, and contain two or three black seeds of the size and shape of a French bean. The flavor is a little like that of opium, and their taste is sweet. The odor from them produces a sickening sensation, and is slightly offensive.
These seeds contain the essential property of this extraordinary plant, and when pulverized and taken in small doses, operate upon a person in a most peculiar manner. He begins to laugh loudly, boisterously; then he sings, dances and cuts all manner of fantastic capers. Such extravagance of gesture and manner was never produced by any other kind of dosing. The effect continues about an hour, and the patient is uproariously comical. Then the exhausted exhibitor falls into a deep sleep, which continues for an hour or more; and when he awakens, he is utterly unconscious that any such demonstrations have been enacted by him.
A woman in Boston has a Beard almost six feet long. It is her husband.
His Long-Lost Brother. — Robert M. Greene has been knocking around the terrestrial ball since he was 18. Under the same roof-tree in London, where Robert howled his first infant squall, an elder brother was born. About fifteen years ago his elder brother, too, began playing the role of the rolling-stone. He has, however, been a resident of St. Louis nearly three years, and for nine months past the brothers have been living within a half dozen squares of each other, walking the same street daily, and yet never met. The elder brother a few evenings ago chanced in a hotel to hear a gentleman say, "I start for London to-morrow." He addressed this gentleman and asked him if he would deliver a letter to a certain number in Terrace Garden, London. "With pleasure," responded the gentleman, "and, by the way, there is another man here who gave a letter to deliver at the same place and to the same person. Are you relatives?" A reunion was the consequence, and the brothers, who had neither seen nor heard of each other for fifteen years, met.

John Boll has a patriotic bull-dog, which accompanied his master through the Ashantee campaign. Having from his breed a natural turn for fighting, he distinguished himself through the campaign. In one instance he rushed into the enemy's tanks, and singling out one of his naked foes, so bit and worried him that he actually brought in his prisoner in triumph. He is such a favorite with the men that in a heavy engagement their fire was suspended a few minutes to allow of his uninjured retreat from one of his desperate fo-rays.

MEANS WHAT HE SAYS.
Though "conformities strong as proofs of Holy Writ," and as numerous as the sands on the seashore, were produced to prove that the proprietor of Dr. Sage's Catarrh Remedy is in earnest, and means what he says, when he offers $500 reward for any case of Catarrh which he cannot cure, yet there would be some skeptics and fugler who would continue to shout "Humbug!" "HUMBUG!!" "It cannot be because Dr. Homespun says Catarrh cannot be cured." Now, this Dr. Homespun is the identical good-natured old fellow who honestly believes and persists in declaring that this earth is not round or spherical, but as flat as a "slap-jack," and does not turn over, otherwise the water would all be spilled out of Descens Bascom's still pond. But astronomical science has positively demonstrated and proven that Dr. Homespun is wrong in supposing the earth to be flat and stationary, and medical science is daily proving the fact that he is no less mistaken and behind the times in regard to the curability of Catarrh. In short it has been positively proven that this world moves, and that medical science is progressive, the opinion of Dr. Homespun to the contrary nowwithstanding. That Dr. Sage's Catarrh Remedy will cure Catarrh, thousands who have used it attest.
Then buy it, and use it, in doubt do not stand. You will find it in drug stores all over the land.
[From the Catskill Recorder of Nov. 15, 1872.] A GOOD REMEDY.

APPLETON'S AMERICAN CYCLOPEDIA.
NEW REVISED EDITION.
Entirely rewritten by the abled writers on every subject. Printed from new type, and illustrated with several thousand illustrations and Maps.
The work originally published under the title of The New American Cyclopedia was completed just since which time the was circulation which it has attained in all parts of the United States, and the signal developments which have taken place in this branch of publishing and publishers to submit it in an instant and thorough revision, and to lodge a new edition entitled The American Cyclopedia.
Within the last ten years the program of discovery in every department of knowledge has made a new work of reference an imperative war.
The movement of political affairs has kept pace with the development of industry and the construction and refinement of social life. Great wars and consequent revolutions have occurred, involving national changes of peculiar moment. The civil war of our own country, which was at its height when the last eighteen of the old work appeared, has happily been ended, and a new course of commercial and industrial activity has begun.
Larger ascensions to our geographical knowledge have been made by the latest explorers of Armenia.
The great political revolutions of the last decade, with the natural altitude of the lanes of fame, have brought into public view a multitude of new men whose names are in one’s mouth, and of whom she every one is curious to know the partitions. Great battles have been fought in certain areas which the defenses is yet preserved only in the few squares or in the transient publications of the day, but which ought now to take their place in permanent and authentic history.
In preparing the present edition for the press, it has accordingly been the aim of the editors to bring down the information account of the most recent inventions in science, of every fresh production in literature, and of the newest inventions in the practical art; as well as give a succinct and original record of the progress of political and historical events.
The work has been begun after long and careful preliminary labor, and with the most simple materials for each subject. Numbers of the original sturdy plates have been used, but every page has been printed on new type, forming in fact a new Overlapedia, with the same plan and compass as its predecessor, but with greater perennial expenditure, and with such improvements in its composition as have been suggested by longer experience and enlarged knowledge.
The first edition introduced for the first time in this edition have been added, not for the sake of pictorial effect, but to give greater flexibility and force to the explanations in the text. They embrace all branches of science and natural history, and depict the most famous and remarkable features of semery, architecture, and art, as well as various processes of mechanics and manufactures. Although intended rather than instructed rather than instructed have been purposed for insure their art’s excellence; the cost of their execution is enormous; and it is
