SATURDAY...JULY 11, 1874.
Kleinigkeiten.
Read the bargain offered by Judge Clark.
The whooping cough is prevailing among the young of Anaheim.
All of the patent medicines, advertised in the CALIFORNIAN, are for sale at the Anaheim Drug Store.
The San Francisco Circus is announced to appear in Los Angeles on the 17th instant.
Dr. Yocum has rented the dwelling house on Centre Street, at present occupied by Mr. Tim. Boege.
Heimann & George are removing their goods to the store in the Odd Fellows Hall.
Mr. Squires informs us that a bridge has been placed across the Santa Ana ditch on the Santiago road.
The installation of the newly-elected officers of the Anaheim Odd Fellow's lodge has been postponed until next Tuesday evening.
Heimann & George have purchased the house of F. M. Holmesly and moved it on to one of their lots on Sycamore street.
J. K. Tuffree has opened a wood yard on Los Angeles street, opposite the Masonic Hall. Read his advertisement.
Business cards for $5 per thousand at the CALIFORNIAN job office. All printing done in a superior manner from new type and by experienced workmen.
There is a letter at the Anaheim Postoffice, addressed to Mr. Gibson, Mrs. Bennett, Bennetville. In what State and county is Bennetville? queries the postmaster.
B. F. Smith has opened a butcher shop at Richland and Santa Ana. Mr. Smith has had a large experience in this line, and we recommend him as qualified to give general satisfaction.
Mr. Sontag, Cashier of the San Francisco Postoffice department, has been in Anaheim for the past few days. He has been the guest of his friend, R. N. White Esq.
Seebold and Knox have been commendable enterprise.
Through the courtesy of J. E. Bacon Esq., of San Juan Capistrano, we were yesterday shown a number of the most magnificent rams that we have ever seen. They are thoroughbred Spanish Merino rams of the Infantado or Royal stock of Spain, and were originally called in that country "sheep of the golden fleece" from the golden color of the wool, and its extremely fine texture. Of the three distinct breeds of the genuine Spanish Merino, the one from which these sheep are descended finds the most favor among experienced wool-growers. They were brought from Vermont to this country by J. H. Kirkpatrick, of Ohio, and are a part of a lot sold by him to Messrs. Bacon, Beech and Fisher Bros. Mr. Kirkpatrick, we understand, intends locating himself permanently in this county, and will devote his attention to the importation and raising of thoroughbred sheep. To Mr. Bacon, who has for so many years been identified with the sheep interest of Los Angeles County, and who is so widely known as one of our most enterprising citizens, it is needless to allude. From the time when he first started as a sheep-raiser with but a small band of sheep, it has been his study and endeavor to promote not only his individual interests, but to improve the standard of sheep-raising throughout this entire section. Even now, when Dame Fortune has bestowed upon him so ample competency, he wearies net in well-doing but is as active and energetic as when in former times the exertion was necessary to increase his store.
THE FOURTH OF JULY IN RICHLAND.
ED. CALIFORNIAN:—The Fourth, that invisible dot of time that rolls mysteriously around every year, and turns with its accelerated force, the whole country into a perfect scene of confusion and dismay, reached here last Friday night at 12, sharp. It was a glorious day for preachers, but a day of sadness for poultry yards. This place was almost depopulated. They left their homes and rushed in crowds to Laguna Cafion, Santa Ana and your city. The Santa Ana celebration was a very enjoyable affair. The Grange met and attended to the regular order of business, in prompt, neat and systematic style. It would do any Granger good to hear them sing, and note the ability of the offenders. After this, the procession marched to the
Postoffice addressed to Mr. Gibson, Mrs. Bennett, Bennetville. In what State and county is Bennetville? queries the postmaster.
—B. F. Smith has opened a butcher shop at Richland and Santa Ana. Mr. Smith has had a large experience in this line, and we recommend him as qualified to give general satisfaction.
—Mr. Sontag, Cashier of the San Francisco Postoffice department, has been in Anaheim for the past few days. He has been the guest of his friend, R. N. White Esq.
—Seebold and Knox have been employed by the Land Company to retrace the boundaries of Las Bolsas rancho. The survey will be commenced next week.
—The freight steamer "California" will leave San Pedro on Tuesday next for San Francisco. This steamer is especially adapted for carrying live stock of all kinds.
—We had the pleasure on yesterday of meeting again our friend, Capt. Glassell, who has been ill for so long a time. The Captain reports his health as entirely restored, and is looking much better than before his illness.
—Two sermons were delivered on Wednesday evening, one by the Rev. W. H. Hill, and the other by Rev. Mr. Goethe of the Lutheran faith. The latter sermon was delivered in the German language.
—During the past week has occurred the warmest weather of the season. A reference to our thermometrical tables however will show that the weather would not be considered oppressive elsewhere.
—The Board of Supervisors have ordered elections to be held at Wilmington and San Juan Capistrano under the Irrigation Act. The proclamation for San Juan will appear in the CALIFORNIAN of next week.
—The first general meeting of the stockholders of the Bolsa Chica Wharf and Forwarding Company will be held at 1 o'clock to-day at Enterprise Hall. A permanent Board of Directors will be elected, and other business of importance will be transacted.
—We regret to learn that the absence of Judge Clark from his office during the latter portion of the week was occasioned by indisposition, resulting from an injury received some years ago. We understand, however, that he is rapidly convalescing.
—Mr. James McFadden, of Santa Ana, who has recently returned from the Eastern States, intends devoting his attention to the manufacture of cheese. He has purchased and shipped to Newport Landing a cargo of lumber, with which he intends erecting the necessary buildings.
—Owing to an abuse of the permission to remove willows for fence purposes, the Los Angeles Land Company has rescinded said permit and will hereafter prosecute any persons, removing timber from their lands unless by special authority from their agent.
—John Bush has been to San Francisco and whilst there placed himself whole country into a perfect scene of confusion and dismay, reached here last Friday night at 12, sharp. After this, the procession marched to the spacious hall of Mr. Hickey where the table was completely laden with the fattest chicken, pies, cakes and everything that would recommend the ladies as the best of caterers. The citizens were not disturbed by those little eagles, so usual on the 4th., but showed good judgment in selecting more palatable birds. The declaration was read. Your obedient servant did his best, but it has some long words and it seemed that we never declared a harder independence. Our patriotism was certainly augmented by our pleasant visit to Santa Ana and the wonderful Fourth of July.

BOARD OF SUPERVISORS. — The Board met in regular session on last Monday. Petitions from the towns of Los Nietos, Wilmington and Compton were received, praying an election on the Local Option Law. The petition for Los Nietos includes the whole township, and those from Wilmington and Compton have no reference to the townships in which they are located. Clerk authorized to publish proclamation, calling an election in those places on the 6th of August. Petition for a new school district to be called San Dimas was granted. The Clerk was authorized to advertise for sealed proposals to build a road through to San Francisco cafion.
WESTMINSTER—Reports from this flourishing colony are highly satisfactory. The crops have turned out splendidly and of course the farmers are contented and happy. Robt. Eccles has secured another splendid artesian well on his farm, having bored only a depth of one hundred feet. Almost every day brings accessions to the population, and in every instance they are men whose influence will serve to bring others. The Fourth was celebrated by a general re-union of the colonists, and after due honor had been done to the day, the matter of starting a co-operative store was discussed, and a committee appointed to canvass for subscriptions to the stock. It is proposed to make the capital stock $2,500 divided into 100 shares at $25 per share and to have the store opened for business not later than August 1st. The committee have met with great encouragement in canvassing.
INSTALLATION OF OFFICERS: — On Wednesday evening the newly elected officers of Orange Lodge No. 225, I. O. O. F., were installed by Deputy District Grand Master E. W. Champlin, assisted by Grand Warden John Fischer,
whose country into a perfect scene of confusion and dismay, reached here last Friday night at 12, sharp. Importer and Dealer in
the Eastern States, intends devoting his attention to the manufacture of cheese.
John Bush has been to San Francisco and whilst there placed himself upon a war footing. In evidence of which fact he has just received nine thousand Henry cartridges. Many an antlered monarch of the hills will have cause to regret this armed occupation of their domain.
The comet has been discovered by the Orange folks...Mr. Smith has moved a neat little shop to town....Corn fields out on the plains look tall, green and beautiful...At the meeting of the Directors of the Semi-Tropical Water Co., Mr. Bowers, the former efficient Supt., was re-elected. Mr. C. Travis is zanjero.
Mr. Philip Davis of the firm of P. Davis & Bro. has returned from New York, where he had been to make arrangements for the purchase of wool. As will be seen by their special advertisement, the firm will pay the highest market price for wool, and will make liberal cash advances to their customers.
Dr. James Ellis, for some time past a resident of this place, intends locating himself permanently in Los Angeles in order to practice his profession of medicine. The Doctor is a member of the English Royal College of Surgeons, and is an ex-surgeon of the English Navy. During his practice here, he has favorably impressed the public as a skilful physician, and his departure will be the cause of much regret.
Judgment by default has been entered by the District Court against the following defendants: G. Krouse, W. Simpson, E. Newman, D. Johnson, R. Worth, Goodman, Hudepohl, S. E. Smith, S. Worth, S. Bernard, I. Fralech, J. R. Williams, S. Bauer, R. W. Shea, J. H. Wood, W. H. Gliesan, J. F. Devine and H. M. Baxter. The suits were all the instance of the Los Angeles Land Company and were brought by Alfred Robinson, Trustee.
INSTALLATION OF OFFICERS — On Wednesday evening the newly elected officers of Orange Lodge No. 225, I.O. O.F. were installed by Deputy District Grand Master E.W. Champlin, assisted by Grand Warden John Fischer, Grand Treasurer M.L. Goodman, Grand See, P.C.McKinnle, Grand Marshal Jones J.Dyer, and Grand Guardian John P.Zeyn. The names of the officers are as follows: D.C.Hayward, N.G.; M.A.Peters, V.G.; D.K.Shrode, Treasurer; A.Johnson, R.S.; H.Lockwood, P.S. The lodge, although still in its infancy, is represented to be in a flourishing condition. It has a membership of twenty-three persons and is out of debt with money in the treasury.
SANTA ANA ITEMS — From our correspondent: The principal work of this section at present is harvesting and threshing. The crop of barley, oats, rye etc., is really splendid. The corn crop gives promise of an immense yield...The ball last week was a success. Quite a large crowd were in attendance, and all seemed to enjoy themselves hugely. The social ple-nicle on the Fourth was a pleasant affair. The drive was one of the most enjoyable features on the programme...Our school under the direction of Mr.C.W.Brown is in a very prosperous condition. Mr.Brown is a faithful worker and takes a great interest in his school.
