The Star of last Sunday contained a pretty written article entitled "The Romance of the Church of our Saviour," giving a history of the edifice of that name which adorns the Mission San Gabriel. As a sequel to the narrative in the Star, we give the "romance" as narrated in our hearing by the Rev. Mr. Messenger, the pastor of the church. Some six or seven years ago, Mrs. Frances Jones Vinton, of Providence, Rhode Island, a wealthy Christian lady, placed at the disposal of the gentleman alluded to, a sum of money with which to erect an edifice commemorative of her devotion to the ever-living God. The choice of location was left entirely to the judgment of Mr. Messenger, and in accordance with his instructions he proceeded to visit the several settlements in Southern California, being desirous of building the structure where the interests of religion would be best subserved. Among other places, he visited Anaheim, and was favorably impressed, no less by its beauty than by the bright future which his intelligent mind at once saw was in store for it. At that time there was no Protestant place of worship in Anaheim, and he determined to supply the omission. But to use his own words, "when I spoke of the project to the people they listened with apathy and indifference; not one of them would extend the right hand of fellowship nor render me any assistance or advice whatever." So with a pang of regret he left Anaheim, and commenced the erection of the "Church of our Saviour" in San Gabriel, where the people were not slow to perceive the benefits which would arise from having such a building in their midst, and who rendered every assistance which could lessen the labor of the reverend gentleman. "It stands apart and seems, in its isolation, to be almost out of place," says the Star. Verily, the reader of the foregoing will heartily concur in that statement, and, perhaps indulge in a few vain regrets. The following description of the church is from the Star's article: "The cost of the simple and unpretting, but beautiful house of worship was about $4,000. The interior is 40x 22 feet, exclusive of tower and vestry room, and it has been so constructed that if at any future time it shall be..." Rev. L. P. Webber has removed from Westminster to this place in order that he may place himself under the treatment of Dr. Jones. Mr. Th. Rimpau was re-elected School Trustee for Anaheim District by a handsome majority. The vote was 64 for and 30 against him. There are 260 children between the ages of 5 and 17 years, and 108 children under 5 years of age in Anaheim School District. The Board of Supervisors meet on Monday. They will also sit as a Board of Equalization during their present session. New York passengers by the steamship Ancon will take the steamer Orizaba on Monday, connecting with the Panama steamer at San Diego. Robert Menzel has purchased a lot on Los Angeles street from Heimann & George, and intends building upon it. Pasqual Silvas was up in Justice Bailey's court yesterday on a charge of assault with a deadly weapon upon his wife. Acquitted. Mr. J. E. Bacon arrived last week with a number of thoroughbred rams for the improvement of his flocks at San Juan. Watermelons and cucumbers, bananas and cocoanuts are among the dainties which just now tickle the palates of the Anaheimers. The Granges, east of the Santa Ana river, unite to-day in a Fourth of July dinner at Santa Ana. Grangers generally are invited. The following letters remain in Anaheim post-office, uncalled for: Bossworth, F. Q. Casanneva, M. Gilky; Murphy, P. Pearson, D. C. Ray, D. Rafferty, S. W. Wolfe. The weekly mail, established between Wilmington and Anaheim, should have been here on Wednesday for the first time, but failed to put in an appearance. The youthful possessors of firecrackers, squirrels and torpedoes could not wait for the 4th, but commenced bombarding on Friday afternoon on Centre Street. The work of making brick for the projected buildings on Centre Street will be commenced next week. The kilns are located opposite the residence of Mr. Crowther. Rev. L. P. Webber has resigned the pastorate of the Presbyterian Church at this place. His letter of resignation and the resolutions accepting it, will be published next week. A patent has been issued for an undivided half-interest in the rancho Las Bolsas, Los Angeles county, comprising 33,460 acres, to Ramon Yorba. Mr. Olden has been notified that the patent is on its way from Washington. The sailing of the steamship Mohongo has been postponed on account of the Fourth of July celebration in Los Angeles. It will leave Wilmington to-morrow afternoon on the arrival of the train from Los Angeles. Rev. W. H. Hill, P. G. M. of Odd Fellows, and P. G. Chaplain of the F. A.M. will preside in Enterprise hall credited every assistance which could lessen the labor of the reverend gentleman. "It stands apart and seems, in its isolation, to be almost out of place," says the Star. Verily, the reader of the foregoing will heartily concur in that statement, and, perhaps indulge in a few vain regrets. The following description of the church is from the Star's article: "The cost of the simple and unpretinging, but beautiful house of worship was about $4,000. The interior is 40x22 feet, exclusive of tower and vestry room, and it has been so constructed that if at any future time it shall be found necessary to enlarge it, the entire plan can be changed to a cruciform one, which will afford ample room for any congregation likely to gather within its sacred precincts. With the exception of the labor contributed by the present pastor, Rev. Mr. Messenger, the entire expense of the construction of the edifice has been borne by the lady whose name we have already mentioned. Desirous of leaving nothing undone, she authorized the purchase of a bell, which was a month or two ago effected, at Cincinnati, Ohio." WESTMINSTER.-C. H. sends us the following items: Two mowers and a grain header have been running on the colony for several weeks. The crops are abundant. Some fields of grain, which were sown in the Spring of '73 and which yielded no crop last year, are this year doing finely as volunteer; In some cases the yield was thirty bushels to the acre. Mr. Sears' threshing machine has been at work in the neighborhood, and already a considerable amount of grain has been shipped. There will be several thousand sacks of rye and barley shipped from this settlement before the season is over. Potatoes are doing finely and the early varieties are ready for market. It is estimated that four thousand sacks will be sent to market from this section. Farmers are about through planting corn. A great breadth has been planted; it is impossible to estimate the number of acres from the present data. New settlers are continually arriving and new buildings are going up in various places. Mr. J. Griswold has just moved into his new residence, and the Rev. Mr. King's house is about completed. Several parties are waiting to bore wells. The well tools are now at work on the farm of Robert Eccles. They are down fifty-one feet and will probably complete the well before this is published. Henry L. Bancroft has charge of the well tools. To give some idea of the increase in population here during the past year, I will give two items from the census reports: 1873. No.of children under 21 years of age, 67 1873.No.of school children.....39 1874.No.of children under 21 years of age, 107 1874.No.of school children.....67 ANOTHER ROBBERY.-Several times lately the kitchen of Mrs. Frohling has been entered and provisions stolen therefrom. On Monday night the thief, emboldened by his repeated successes after supplying the inner man in the kitchen, made his way into the house, and groping about in the dark, trapping one of the sleeping children... A patent has been issued for an undivided half-interest in the rancho Las Bolsas, Los Angeles county, comprising 33,460 acres, to Ramon Yorba. Mr. Olden has been notified that the patent is on its way from Washington. The sailing of the steamship, Mohongo has been postponed on account of the Fourth of July celebration in Los Angeles. It will leave Wilmington to anorrow afternoon on the arrival of the train from Los Angeles. Rev. W. H. Hill, P. G. M. of Odd Fellows, and P. G. Chaplain of the F. & A. M., will preach in Enterprise hall on Wednesday evening next at 8 o'clock. The reputation as a preacher acquired by this gentleman will no doubt insure him a large audience. At the regular meeting of the lodge on Tuesday night, Anaheim Lodge No. 190 I. O. O. F. elected its officers for the ensuing year. Their names are as follows: F. R. Lafaucherie, N. G.; Max Nebelung, V. G.; F. E. Mielenz, R.S.; H. E. Boldt, P. S.; John Flacher, Treasurer. They will be installed on Tuesday evening next. We have received from M. Gray, music publisher of San Francisco, several pieces of music, among which are the pallads "The Summer time that was," and "The Frolicsome Widow of Rallymecrag." The "March of the 1st Infantry Regiment" we gave to the Anaheim band, and its stirring strains will soon be heard in our midst. W. J. Smith, of Orangethorpe district, has met with more than ordinary success in his search for artesian water. His well is two hundred and sixty feet in depth and is fed by several streams. The first flowing water was reached at a depth of one hundred and fifty feet. By piercing his pipe at each point, he has succeeded in obtaining the largest well in this section. Mr. Stewart, under whose supervision the well was bored, has contracted for several other wells in that section. The Express has discovered one of these erratic celestials, yelepta comet. If Bartar were about, we could readily imagine that a Star had created the delusional As he, however, is far from the same, we take it that they have seen the Herald's map, which (for a similar reason as that assigned by the backwoodsman for asserting that his dog was a good beardog—"He wasn't anything else,") must be a comet. ANOTHER ROBBERY. Several times lately the kitchen of Mrs. Frohling has been entered and provisions stolen therefrom. On Monday night the thief, emboldened by his repeated successes, after supplying the inner man in the kitchen, made his way into the house, and groping about in the dark, touched one of the sleeping children. The child, awakened by the action, aroused the lady of the house by its screams of fright. Mrs. Frohling rushed across the street for assistance and was followed by the bold villain. Messrs. Dravsen and Wille, hearing the noise, came out also, and made an attempt to capture the robber, but under cover of a large butcher knife he succeeded in making his escape. He was recognized, however, as one, Juan Felipe, an Indian. He was captured on Thursday by Deputy Sheriff Byrd, and yesterday he was committed to jail to await the action of the Grand Jury. MEETING OF THE LIGHTER COMPANY. — A meeting of the Lighter Company was held yesterday afternoon. We have been informed that the Company is now out of debt, and it is extremely unlikely, with the efficient agent now in command, that they will ever get in again.
