Southern California SATURDAY...JUNE 6, 1874. Kleinigkeiten. Benj. Dreyfus is at Cucamonga. The total indebtedness of Los Angeles county is $525,949.08. Mrs. H. D. Polhemus arrived home on Thursday. Services will be held in the Catholic Church to-morrow. Local Option is coming. It has successfully passed Santa Barbara. Jno. P. Zeyn is School Census Marshal for Anaheim School District. D. K. Williams was elected Sexton by the Anaheim Cemetery Association. An appeal has been taken to the District Court in the case of Cohen vs. Davis. Fairview Grange will hold its regular semi-monthly meeting on next Friday evening. The Road Commissioner has been instructed to open and improve the Anaheim and Wilmington road. The citizens living near San Antonio Creek in the San Jose valley have petitioned for the creation of a water district under the new law. The unpaid taxes of 1872-3 will become delinquent on the first Monday in July, after which time 25 per cent will be added. A called meeting of Anaheim Lodge No. 209, F. & A. M. will be held on next Saturday evening, June 13th, at 7 o'clock P.M. Mrs. Kraemer has purchased town lot No. 49, of the original plat of Anaheim, and intends erecting a cottage residence upon it. The spring wool clip of this section has been received at Anaheim Landing and is largely in excess of that of last year. "Mony a mickle mak'a muckle," Over two and one-half million dollars have been paid into the Grangers for initiation fees alone, since the organization of the Order. Jas. F. Barham has purchased Jacob Keller's sheep. Mr. Keller is preparing to return to Germany, and is disposing of his personal property with that intention. McGlaughlin has some big corn stalks on exhibition at the store of P. Davis & Bro. They are five and one-third dark, an employee of Wm. Crowther had occasion to visit the blacksmith shop to get some tools. On entering, he found a sock of charcoal in a smouldering condition, and which would in a few moments have become a burning mass. Thus, by a lucky accident, we once more escape the ravages of the fire fiend. We have received an invitation to attend the annual reunion of the pioneer residents of old Tuolumne county to be held at Oakland on the 17th inst. We had not the honor to reside in Tuolumne in '49, in fact we don't know exactly where we were or how situated at that period. But we return thanks for the invitation, nevertheless. Our foreman came in yesterday morning and implored us with tears in his eyes to do our spelling without using z's as that letter had been entirely overlooked by the type-founder. We now appreciate the difficulty under which "Mr. Dick," of Copperfield fame, labored in keeping King Charles out of his memorial. Addis has established his cottage photograph room opposite the Pico House in Los Angeles, and is reported to be doing a rushing business in his line. He remembers kindly his sojourn in Anaheim, all except the rainy part, but always willing to sacrifice himself and will come back whenever the farms again become dry. We regret to learn that Rev. L. P. Webber of Westminster has become sadly impaired in health. Mr. Webber has done good work, both as a citizen and a minister, since his advent in Anaheim, and we trust that his days may yet be long in the land which is indebted much, morally and socially, to the example of an upright, christian gentleman. Another little case has arisen out of the Wartenburg and Heffner unpleasantness. It will be remembered that Wartenburg's team ran off whilst he was in durance vile last week. He has sued Heffner, who was complaining witness against him; for false imprisonment and damages, attendant thereon. The case will be tried by a jury before Justice Bailey on Tuesday, June 9th. A worthy farmer living a couple of miles southwest of town, tells us of a most singular occurrence at his place, a few days ago. On last Thursday week one of his sows was delivered of five pigs on Friday of another on... "Mony a mickle mak' a muckle," Over two and one-half million dollars have been paid into the Grangers for initiation fees alone since the organization of the Order. Jas. F. Barham has purchased Jacob Keller's sheep. Mr. Keller is preparing to return to Germany, and is disposing of his personal property with that intention. McGaughlin has some big corn stalks on exhibition at the store of P. Davis & Bro. They are five and one-half feet high and grew from the seed in five weeks. The store in the Old-Fellows Hall building has been leased by Messrs. Heimann & George, who will occupy their new quarters as soon as the necessary shelving, etc., is put in place. County Superintendent, Peck, writes us that "a professional teacher, not actually engaged as such, can be Census Marshall, but he must not close school for that purpose." The Board of Supervisors have granted John Fisher and Wm. R. Olden a franchise to construct a wharf at Bolsa Chica Landing; said franchise to hold good for twenty years. The report of the road viewers of Walnut Street in Anaheim Extension, recommending that no change be made in present road, was rejected by the Board of Supervisors. A verdict has been rendered for the third time in Angle vs. Mitchell. Under the latest decision Angel receives $30,000 cash, and a horse, and Mitchell pays his own costs and half of Angle's. The Stock-holders of the Anaheim Lighter Company will hold a business meeting on Monday afternoon. The wharf subject will be a topic of discussion and therefore, a full attendance is earnestly desired. At a meeting of the Southern District Agricultural Society, held at Los Angeles, a very attractive speed programme was arranged. The Fair will commence on Monday, October 26th, and continue six days. The election for District Overseers ordered to be held in Los Nietos, Wilmington, Azusa, El Monte, San Gabriel and La Ballona districts on the 18th instant, has been indefinitely postponed. Mr. T. G. Sorenson commenced to-day a hydrographical survey for the Bolsa Chica Wharf Company. In addition to taking soundings, he will examine thoroughly the bottom of the shore approaches at their landing. The case of the People vs. Heffner, changed from Justice Bailey's Court to Justice Johnson of Santa Ana, and set originally for last Tuesday, will be tried before the last named gentleman to-day. We present a new feature this week in a full and detailed report of the San Francisco markets. It is taken from the Commercial Herald, is corrected weekly, and can be relied upon as correct in every detail. Capt. We present a new feature this week in a full and detailed report of the San Francisco markets. It is taken from the Commercial Herald, is corrected weekly, and can be relied upon as correct in every detail. Capt. Northam, of the Los Angeles and San Bernardino Land Company, who has been busily engaged for the past week in examining the canal route, surveyed last Fall, leaves on the steamer to-day for San Francisco. Spanish Jo, arrested by Officer Davies as one of the principals in the robbery of Mrs. Eldredge, was examined before Justice Clark on Wednesday and discharged from custody. He was not the man. The organ purchased for use in the Episcopal Church, arrived in good condition on last Saturday. It is an elegant-looking instrument, and has a clear, sweet tone, very pleasing to the ear. Frank Ey, a barber well-known to tonsorial fame, has established himself at the Planters' Hotel, where he can be found at all hours, ready to shave, shampoo, cut hair, or do anything that he may be called upon to do. See his advertisement new to-day. At the meeting of the Anaheim Cemetery Association, held on Monday, Messrs. Athearn and Korn were elected to fill the vacancies in the Board of Trustees. The Board is now composed of Messrs. Fischer, Langenberger, Zeyn, Korn, Kroeger, Athearn and Lorenz. Capt. Glassell, who has been seriously ill in Los Angeles for so long a time, has become almost convalescent, and hopes soon to be again the mainspring of the Richland settlement. It has been only during the absence of the Captain that the good effect of his presence and enterprise in promoting the growth of that settlement has been felt, and it will be with much silent, though heartfelt gladness, that his return will be hailed by his many friends.
