In the "show" line had actually broken, I thought I'd wade in my mine—at the same time getting encouraging nod of approval for my friend, the stage driver, Chad Wright, who was good enough put me into communication with Dave Smart, a seemingly first-fellow, and proprietor of the driving and billiard saloon here, promised to put my program around, and see to things generally. I think this is about the one place that I have visited in Southern California that I have not seen somebody that I have in the east days seen before. On my arrival I inquired for a hotel, and I found it to be a little yellow cottage, kept in very primitive style. Sitting outside the door was a young, pretty buxom girl fifteen, and a nice looking Spanish woman of about forty. I asked could have a room for the night, some supper? "Si, Senor," said lady; the young girl disappeared evidently not having made up mind what sort of person I was what I was doing, where going, what I was going to do when I there—all my baggage consisting of a small paper parcel, containing "manuscript hook." So I went back to the saloon of Dave Smith where I found about twenty of programmes lying on the table, suggested that he might have the "put around" as he promised, whether he said, "Oh no! they all know about it—it only takes three or four to bill this town." "I think you get a full house; but we've had many things lately that it's hard get the people out; now a circus a nigger show, or bears is sure draw, but I guess you'll do pre-well." I then went over to see my lady, but finding she didn't speak English, couldn't get along well with her, so turning to young girl, asked her if she knew anything about the show that night at the school house on the n street? She replied "No, sir, never nothink about it." This was a damper; so I walked through the village, resolved speak to the first man I mot. "Oh!" said he; "something lough!" "Yes," says I, "only more so." "Well," says he, "maybe you'll pretty well; but we've had so much lately that it takes a great deal bring them out!" I then went to the Post Office try and get a little consolation. Says I to the Postmaster, "Do think there'll be many at the school house to night?" "Well, yes; I heard two or three say they'd go and see what it looked like; but the fact is we've had much lately that it's hard to say 'em up!" I thought I'd never been in town where they'd had so much before, lately. So I crossed over the blacksmith's, and asked smith what he thought of the prospect. "Well," says he, "are you showman?" "Yes," says I. "Well, what sort of a show is something about temperance?" "Yes," says I, "it's quite temperate." "Well, then, I wouldn't give dog-darn for it; we've had so much lately o' that sort o' thing, that folks are sick of it, and I guess you'd better 'make tracks.'" I found two or three men playing cards, some smoking and drinking, and outside, the streets deserted, dark, desolate and dreary. Quarter to eight—I suggested to my friend Dave Smart it was about time to light up, at which idea he started off as though he had been shot from a gun and disappeared in the darkness, I watching him with painful interest. I soon saw a gentle light, and heard the most frantic ringing of a bell. I thought the town was on fire; back came Dave Smart, and I asked him what it meant, "Oh," says he, "Mr Sandridge, the School Trustee, and Mayor of the town, is ringing the people in, and that's sure to scare up a good many." At about a quarter past eight I thought I'd venture out, and walking, as I thought, in the vicinity of the school house—for it was awful dark—I, with my manuscript book in hand, fell down a big hole, disappearing entirely for awhile while the only answer to my cries for some one to come and help me out, was the lowing of a cow in the distance, and the continued ringing I found it to be a little stage, kept in very primitive sitting outside the door, pretty buxom girl of a nice looking Spanish about forty. Came six-and-a-half feet in of a most austere counmanded him a programme him if he thought there much of a house. a very suspicious look the programme, said: it mean? What do be; "something like I, "only more so." he, "maybe you'll do but we've had so much takes a great deal to out!" to the Post Office to a little consolation. the Postmaster, "D'ye will be many at the school night?" I heard two or three go and see what it looks the fact is we've had so that it's hard to stir I'd never been in a they'd had so much ly. So I crossed over to with's, and asked smithy ought of the prospect. says he, 'are you the what sort of a show is it? about temperance?" says I, "it's quite temperthen, I wouldn't give a or it; we've had so much sort of thing, that our back of it, and I guess you make tracks." went back to the hotel, half past six, I sat down my meal, which was very angely enjoyed. About even, thought I'd look Yes, mam," says I. What kinder thing is it?" says she. It's sort o' mixed," says I. It looks a leetle that way," says she; "but how much do you charge to let me in"? Well ma'am," says I, "the regular price is a dollar, but seeing there's no one in as yet, I'll let you in for nothing!" And in she went; and after reading the chalk words on the blackboard, came out like a shot, saying: "Well, we've had so many o' those things lately, that—here the whistling of the boys drowned the rest. So we locked up the school-house and I went to the hotel, the proprietor immediately inquiring of me "How the show went off." First-rate," says I, "only I went off first!" The only time this feat has been performed in this or any other country! We all had a good laugh over it, and this is what happened to me in Los Nietos or Gallatin—although there was only one old Gal-let-in, and she got in for nothing!—Alta. We have been requested by the U.S. Land Register to reprint the following in regard to mining claims. It is different from that published last week. Miners must perform $100 worth of work on a claim of 1,500 feet, or less, each year. The time for the expenditure of the first annual amount required under the Act of 1872, on all claims located prior to the passage of said Act, is extended to the 10th day of June, 1874. The work may be done at any time before the expiration of the year. Claims located under the Act of 1872 must have $100 worth of work done on them each year. ALFRED JAMES, REGISTER
