Southern Californian SATURDAY... MAY 23, 1674 MISCELLANEOUS. Jerusalem is threatened with a famine. An attempt was made to burn Dutch Flat, Cal., last week. The Pacific Mail Steamship Co.'s new steamer, City of Tokio, has been launched. Nicholas, the nephew of the Czar of Russia, who was arrested recently in London, is charged with stealing his mother's diamonds. The Government of Guatamela offers full indemnity and reparation for the outrages perpetrated on Vice-Consul Magee. It must have been very trying on the early settlers, or rather adventurers, of California, the finding of appropriate names for places and things which they came across in their wanderings while searching for gold. What a terrible mental strain the mind must have been put to that named the wonders of our far-famed Geysers, and, whoever it was, he evidently tried to "give the devil his due." Here are a few of them: Pluton Creek, Devil's Office, Purgatory, Devils Anchor, Devils Arm Chair, Devil's Labratory, Devil's Inkstand, Devil's Punch Bowl, Devils Steampipe, Devil's Honeycomb, Devil's Engine, Devil's Soup Pot, Devil's Pulpit, Devil's Lunch Table, Devil's Rest. These names are about on a par with the names given some of the early mining camps, some of which—the mildest—are maintained until this day. The following letter from the U.S. Land Register of this District Photon Creek, Devil's Office, Purgatory, Devils Anchor, Devils Arm Chair, Devil's Laboratory, Devil's Inkstand, Devil's Punch Bowl, Devils Steampipe, Devil's Honeycomb, Devil's Engine, Devil's Soup Pot, Devil's Palpit, Devil's Lunch Table, Devil's Rest. These names are about on a par with the names given some of the early mining camps, some of which—the mildest—are maintained until this day. The following letter from the U.S. Land Register of this District will show what the law requires in respect to mining claims: Los Angeles, May 18, 1874. Miners must perform $100 worth of work on a claim of 1,500 feet, or less, each year. The time for the expenditure of the first annual amount required under the Act of 1872 is extended to the 10th day of June 1874. The work may be done at any time before the expiration of the year. Claims located under the Act of 1872 must have $100 worth of work done on them each year. Alfred James, Register. MISCELLANEOUS. Great Inducements! FOR CASH ONLY!!
