SATURDAY... MAY 9, 1874.
MISCELLANEOUS
The Alabama river was higher during the month of April than during the great flood of 1865.
The House Committee on Appropriations have agreed to report favorably on the bill appropriating $900,000 for the relief of the Louisiana sufferers.
The hull of the largest lake steamboat yet built has been completed at Miami City, Michigan. This great vessel is intended for the grain trade between Buffalo and Chicago, and measures 2,200 tons.
Fourteen thousand square miles of territory in Louisiana, Mississippi and Arkansas, are covered with water. This territory embraces some of the best cotton lands in these States.
A dispatch from Little Rock says a body of Baxter's troops, from the Pine Bluff, attacked a Brooks party at New Gascony, April 30, and killed nine and wounded twenty of them. The balance of them were taken prisoners.
The Mississippi overflow has created 25,000 sufferers in Louisiana. The parishes in which the crops are raised, formerly produced one hundred hogsheads of sugar, nearly four million dollars worth of molasses, one hundred and forty two thousand bales of cotton and fourteen million pounds of rice.
During the month of March there arrived by rail at San Francisco, 3,412 persons from various localities in the East, while the departures only amounted to 1,457, being a total gain for California of 1,955.

During the month of March there arrived by rail at San Francisco, 3,412 persons from various localities in the East, while the departures only amounted to 1,457, being a total gain for California of 1,955 without estimating the number by steamer.
The issue of the 20,000 rations for twenty-two days, with a proper supply of clothing for the immediate relief of the people of the lower Mississippi river, will be made through the Commissioners appointed by the New Orleans authorities. The cost will be $90,000, and the Secretary of War is instructed by Congress to appropriate that amount.
It is said that the Chinese authorities meditate sending, at no distant date, an experimental squadron of two or more of their new fleet, on a voyage to Europe. This pris-worthy project is reported to have the warm support of the Viceroy of the Two Kiang, and we trust nothing will occur to check its being put in execution. It will be a startling novelty for the West to find that China, so long absorbent of European gunboat strength, is actually seeding forth some of her own.
