Southern Californian SATURDAY, APRIL 25, 1874. MISCELLANEOUS. W. W. Kimball, of Riverside, was found dead on his farm last Friday. Washburn has been elected to fill Sumner's seat in the United States Senate. A Republican State Convention meets in Springfield on the 17th of May. The Indiana Republican State Convention will meet at Indianapolis on June 17th. The body of Dr. Livingstone was interred at Westminster Abbey on the 17th inst. There were $20,000,000 expended last year in passage money between this country and Great Britain. Henry Ward Beecher’s church has agreed to give him a six month’s leave of absence and traveling expenses. Investigation by a Congressional committee shows that Texas Indians have stolen over 100,000 head of cattle in twenty years. The Committee on Territories, of the Federal House of Representatives has decided to report a bill for the admission of New Mexico as a State. Rev. Dr. Lyman Beecher’s salary seventy years ago was $300 per annum and firewood. His son, Henry Ward Beecher, receives $20,000 per annum, but buys his firewood. The Cincinnati Times says: “Nebuchadnezzar was not the first Granger. Eve made quite a reputation in the apple business, and Rev. Dr. Lyman Beecher’s salary seventy years ago was $300 per annum and firewood. His son, Henry Ward Beecher, receives $20,000 per annum, but buys his firewood. The Cincinnati Times says: “Nebuchadnezzar was not the first Granger. Eve made quite a reputation in the apple business, and broke up A-dam monopoly, and was also the very first to patronize husbandry. Owing to what he regards as unfavorable international action in regard to tolls on tonnage through the Suez Canal, M. de Lesseps threatens to dismiss his pilots and extinguish the lights in the lighthouses, thus virtually closing the canal. The following are the incorporators of the Los Angeles and Independence railroad. Mr. F. P. F. Temple was elected President; Gov. J. G. Downey, Treasurer; and Capt. Chas. E. Beane, Secretary. The books will be prepared at once and opened for subscription. The currant crop of Alameda county promises this year, to be very abundant. Last year it was greatly injured by the frost, and not more than a third of a crop was gathered; but the price maintained was double that of the previous year. The establishment of the drying works at San Lorenzo largely contributed to the result. A Nebraska journal invitingly says: “Who says farmers cannot get rich in this State? Fifteen years ago a young man came to the State without a dollar in the world. Last week he went out of the State carrying with him the sum of one dollar and thirty-eight cents, the saving of fifteen years of frugal life. Come West, young man, come West!” There is good sense in the proceedings of divers country agricultural societies in Pennsylvania. They send committees of intelligent members to visit the State Agricultural College at unexpected times, thus having the advantage of accurate and fair reports, and of keeping professors and students in a state of anxious readiness. Imprisonment in a darkened room while feathering, and a curling iron, insure fair and wavy plumage; while trimming feathers, and scraping and varnishing spurs assist the artificial effort. O'Keefe, a member of the Montana Legislature, recently answering a speech of one of his fellow members, said: "Mr. Speaker—This is a Democratic Legislature, and it is a shame to permit a one-house Republican like Sanders to run it. No sir, because the Senator from Lewis and Clark counties is gifted with a tongue as long as a eurlew, he mustn't think he can subdue and demolish all of us." A lady of San Jose recently applied a substance known as "Oriental Creme," for the purpose of beautifying her complexion. A few days after her face became sore, and covered with eruptions. Her husband, who is a chemist, attributed the cause of the ailment to the "Creme," and set about analyzing the compound. He found the villainous stuff to contain about 25 per cent. in volume of subchloride of mercury, or calomel. This penetrates the pores of the skin readily, and makes a smooth, marble-like complexion for the time being, but the subsequent developments are not so pleasant. The mercury is deadly poison and some young lady who uses it will find her teeth loose and dropping out some day. The best cosmetic for the skin is plain food, a alone conscience and plenty of exercise in the open air. HOTELS, RESTAURANTS, ETC. LANTERS' HOTEL WARNER LOS ANGELES AND CENTRE STREETS, ANAHEIM, CAL.
