Equation Between Ratio Distance and Land Value
A valuable, and in some rare remarkable paper, by Genevieve S. Rosecrans, under the abovemention, appears in Van Ness Magazine for June. Land of every degree, as well as who take an intelligent interest in the larger problems of political economy, will find their account in possessing selves of this paper and many contents. The writer gives mulas, based upon conditions are universal in their application for ascertaining the value of any point upon a railroad element to be known are: (1) average product of the land acre, in centals (100lbs). (2) average value of the produce central at market. (3.) The producing the crop. (4.) The transportation per cental per mile. (5.) The distance to marries; and (6.) The per centerest of money. These elements are sufficient to ascertain the of tillable land at any distance market, and may be stated in mulas which in turn are exp in the following "rules:"

Average product of the land acre, in centals (100ft²). The average value of the product central at market. (3.) The producing the crop. (4.) The transportation per cental per mile; and (6.) The per cent interest of money. These elems are sufficient to ascertain the of tillable land at any distance market, and may be stated in mlas which in turn are exp in the following "rules:"
I. To calculate the market of any kind of crop:
From the average net price of a cental of the crop tract the cost of producing it to be sent to the market at price of hauling it to the multiplify the remainder of number of centals of the cree will annually produce; this product by the rate of per annum; the quotient will price per acre sought.
Example—Assume (1) the age net market value of wheat ship's tackles to be $175 per cent; the money cost of production same ready for market to be central; the cost of transport to market to be 20 cents per cent; the number of centals the acce annually produce to be 10; the cent interest of money yearly 12. Now, according to the From the market value, $175 tract the cost of producing remainder, 75 cents; and tha of hauling to market, 20 second remainder 55 cents; apply this by the number o produced per acre, 10—p $5 50; divide this by the interest per annum, 12 per cent and $4 84 is the price per sought.
The practical agriculturist land operator may find his size in examining into the effect value of varying first the yield per acre, and second, the crop; if the produce be worth $15 per cent, yield centals per acre, or tobacco $30 per cent, yield 12 cent acres, the relative value of the portation element in the product becomes very different.
But we must confine our intensions to variations of the traction element alone. We state the problem in another To find the greatest distance market at which any product pay; and the equation is ex in the following "rule:"
II. From the market valcental of product subtract cost of producing it ready for divide the remainder cost of hauling one cental on

II. From the market value of product subtract cost of producing it ready for use; divide the remainder by one-seventh of a cent, the hauling one cental one mile; quotient, 525 miles is the distance from ship's tack which wheat growing, under conditions assumed, will pay.
There is a third problem is desirable to solve and answer in mind, to wit: the difference in the value acre due to a mile of dish hauling for the crop. For the equation gives the following.
III. Multiply the number of cents per one-seventh of one cent, the hauling per mile; the pro-ten-sevenths of one cent; divide by 12, the rate of interest, quotient is twelve cents per very nearly. For ten miles the difference in value should be $1 20; for 100 miles and at 525 miles, as we have above, the value of the wheat growing becomes all
German.
A Nation Between Railway Finance and Land Value.
Valuable, and in some respects valuable paper, by General W. Rosecrans, under the above cap appears in Van Nostrand's Journal for June. Land owners pay dgree, as well as citizens take an intelligent interest in larger problems of politics and real economy, will find it to account in possessing them of this paper and mastering incidents. The writer gives for-base upon conditions which universal in their application, pertaining the value of land at point upon a railroad. The facts to be known are: (1) The product of the land per centals (100lbs). (2) The value of the product per cent market. (3.) The cost of bringing the crop. (4.) The cost of transportation per cental per mile; the distance to market inland. (5.) The per cent, indirect money. These elements ancient to ascertain the valueable land at any distance from land may be stated in which in turn are expressed following "rules:"
Thus far we have developed but the simplest relations between production, transportation and the value of land. By keeping careful hold of the same elements in the problem, more intricate relations can be clearly worked out, and the effects of each upon the other, determined upon the largest scale—that is, to the limits within which those relations continue to exercise sensible effects. This has been done in General Rosecrans' paper; and to its conclusions we again invite the attention of our readers.
The Grangers on the Right Track.
At a regular meeting of Hungry Hollow Grange, No. 97, Yolo county, held March 28th, 1874, the following preamble and resolutions were unanimously adopted:
Whereas, Regarding the present system of bagging or sacking grain for market, as practiced on the Pacific coast, is an enormous tax upon the labors of the producers, compelling an outlay on which they receive no return, thereby affecting seriously the individual as well as the entire agricultural interests of the State; 'be it
Resolved, that, as in the continu-
calculate the market value of the crop:
the average net market is a central of the crop sub-total cost of producing it, ready to the market and the hauling it to the market;
by the remainder by the centals of the crop the will annually produce; divide by the rate of interest; the quotient will be the price sought.
Assume (1) the average market value of wheat at jackles to be $1 75 per cental; money cost of producing the land for market to be $1 per cental; the cost of transportation to be 20 cents per cental; number of centals the acre will produce to be 10; the per interest of money yearly to be now, according to the rule: the market value, $1 75, sub-total cost of producing, $1—under, 75 cents; and the price leading to market, 20 cents, remainder 55 cents; multiples by the number of centals and per acre, 10—product divided this by the rate of per annum, 12 per cent.—84 is the price per acre.
practical agriculturist or the operator may find his account mining into the effect on land of varying first the rate of per acre, and second, the kind; if the produce be cotton $15 per cental, yield five per acre, or tobacco worth one cental, yield 12 centals per relative value of the trans-ion element in the problem is very different.
We must confine our illustrations of the transport-element alone. We next the problem in another way—the greatest distance from at which any product will and the equation is expressed following "rule:"
from the market value of a product subtract the net producing it ready for rendivide the remainder by the hauling one cental one mile:
whereas, Regarding the present system of bagging or sacking grain for market, as practiced on the Pacific coast, is an enormous tax upon the labors of the producers, compelling an outlay on which they receive no return, thereby affecting seriously the individual as well as the entire agricultural interests of the State; 'be it
Resolved, that, as in the continuance of the present custom we see no prospective benefits, but on the contrary all that is objectionable and injurious, we will give our support to the system of aggregation, storing and handling grain which has proved itself the most economical, safe and expeditious, and by the early adoption of which the farmers of the great grain producing States of the Northwest, though far removed from the sea board and markets, are wealthy and prosperous, while the reverse is the condition of grain growers of the Pacific coast.
Mildew on the Grapes.
Experience has proven that grapes mildew much more in California in seasons when the soil is well saturated with water, as the present, than in seasons of less moisture. The only remedy yet discovered for the disease, or enemy of the grape is the flour of sulphur, or common ground sulphur. Those who wish to secure beyond a peradventure a good crop of well grown grapes this season, should not neglect to apply the sulphur to their vines as soon as the leaves are fairly out of the buds, and then again when the stems are formed and the blossoms fully open. If sulphur is applied at these times there need be but little apprehension of mildew. It has been ascertained that the sulphur thus applied to the leaves of the grape is absorbed by them, and enters into the circulating sap, and prevents the growth of the fungus called mildew. It is also one of the best and most efficutual manures for the vine, or perhaps, more correctly speaking, it forms combinations which are manures, and which form the ingredients of the vine growths.
A Car-load.
What constitutes a car-load? As a general rule, 20,000 pounds, or 70 barrels of salt, 70 of lime, 90 of flour 60 of whisky, 200 sacks of flour, 6 cords of hard wood, 18 to 20 head of cattle, 50 to 60 head of hogs, 80 to 100 head of sheep, 9,000 feet of solid boards, 17,000 feet of siding.

The foregoing table, which we find in the St. Louis Times, may not be exactly correct, for the reason that all roads do not exactly agree in their rules and estimates, but it approximates so closely to the general average that shippers will find it a great convenience as a matter of reference.
Grafting Grape Vines.
We understand that Messrs. Dixon, Brook, and Beuchard, each the owner of a large vineyard in El Dorado county, are grafting most of their vines with the white muscat of Alexandria and white Malaga grapes, with the view to engage largely in the business of raisin culture. They and their neighbors propose forming a joint stock company and putting up an Alden drying establishment, for preparing raisins and for drying fruit. They believe that in this way they can realize more clear money from their vineyards, and be engaged in a more agreeable business—Sacramento Record.
