Southern California SATURDAY, APRIL 16, 1874. MISCELLANEOUS. Laura D. Fair is residing in Washington under the assumed name of Mrs. M. J. Leedis. The resignation of Due De Broglie, French Minister of Foreign Affairs, is probable. Benjamin P. Avery, of San Francisco, has been confirmed Minister to China. Large quantities of artificial ice are now being manufactured in London by the vaporization of ether. Constantinople was recently overwhelmed with snow and the poor Turks suffered terribly. The Austrian Reichsrat have decided upon breaking up the college of the Jesuits at Innspuick. City officers in Eutawy Alabama, are elected "for two years unless sooner shot by enraged constituents." Indinna has a "Wild Cat Grange" regularly organized under the Constitutional claws affecting new Granges. "Loss of a China packet ship!" exclaimed Mrs. Partington. "No wonder, when iron ones aren't always safe." Petitions for an election under the Local Option law are in circulation in half the towns and villages of the State. The whole production of the precious metals throughout the world during 1873 is estimated to have been worth $219,000,000. A party of pilgrims, numbering between thirty and fifty, will leave New York about May 16th for Rome. It is proposed to square Idaho by approving its northern strip. Petitions for an election under the Local Option law are in circulation in half the towns and villages of the State. A party of pilgrims, numbering between thirty and fifty, will leave New York about May 16th for Rome. It is proposed to square Idaho by annexing its northern strip to Washington Territory. It is the most crooked bordered of Western States or Territories. From various American and English data concerning anaesthetics, it seems that chloroform is regarded as eight times more dangerous than ether. A powerful court intrigue, composed of Conservatives and Ultra Montaines, is attempting to displace Premier Bismarck and to put Gen. Van Monteulle in his stead as the First Chancellor. A case of California butter was sold recently in Baltimore at private sale at one dollar per pound. The quality of the article was superior. The cost of taking butter there is however to great for a regular trade. A five mile shell boatrace for $2,000 a side and the championship of America, to take place at Springfield, Massachusetts, in June, has been arranged between William Scharff, of Pittsburg, and George Brown, of Halifax. It is estimated that the roots of a good crop of red clover left in an acre of land after the removal of the crop, weigh from three to three and a half tons. The same examination gave the weight of an acre of rye roots at 3,500 pounds, and of wheat roots at 3,400 pounds. The Massachusetts Bureau of Labor and Statistics has sent a circular of inquiry to the Ministry of that State and has received answers from five hundred of them. Among other facts elicited, it was ascertained that out of the above number only twenty were unmarried. In a recent publication, issued under the supervision of the Methodist Episcopal Church, it was stated the number of persons, received into that Church on probation, during the fourteen years prior to 1872, was 2,072,686, and that out of this number 1,563,370, seventy-eight per cent. of the whole, fell from grace. Considerable interest prevails in the Produce Exchange. New York. Considerable interest prevails in the Produce Exchange, New York, over the coming advance in the lard crop this season. It is stated that many millions of pounds, or about three-quarters of the stock on hand is held in Cincinnati and Chicago. There is a large short interest, and the price has advanced about three cents per pound. There are strong symptoms of a corner. There has been a good deal said about how to make hens lay during winter, and I venture to say I have seen a hundred articles on the subject. Some of the ways spoken of appeared to reasonable that I tried them, but have never yet discovered a sure way to make hens lay when you want them. If I could I should make a fortune in no time. But I have found out how to have hens that will lay in the winter. I noticed that certain hens laid at certain seasons, and did so for several years, and that if a person had a chance to pick, he might find two or more in a hundred that would be sure to lay in any month of the year. I further find that if such fowls are used to breed from, and such pullets saved as proved winter layers and also bred from, in a few years eggs would be plentiful during the winter, if they could get any food to make eggs from. These winter layers, however, are not much for summer, though some on hatching.—Country ANTERS' HOTEL NORTH LOS ANGELES AND CENTRE STREETS, ANAHEIM, CAL. C. HIGBY & CO., Proprietors.
