Southern Californian SATURDAY, APRIL 11, 1874. MISCELLANEOUS. A savings and loan bank with a capital stock of $200,000 will shortly be in operation at Watsonville. An association to promote Crema-tion or the practice of burning the dead has been formed in New York. The annual income of Trinity Church, New York, is about $500,000. Augusta, Georgia, has memorialized the Georgia delegation at Washington, a king them to work and vote for government aid to the Texas Pacific Railway. The Committee on Territories of the Federal House of Representatives have reported favorably a bill to admit New Mexico into the Union as a State. The Legislature of Mississippi has made an appropriation for the erection of a monument to the Hon. James Lynch, the lately deceased colored Secretary of State of Mississippi. Twenty of the crew of the steam-er Roman, at Jersey City, were poisoned and made very sick last Tuesday by arsenic which had been put in their food. The President of the Brooklyn Street Railroad has issued an order prohibiting all employees of the road from drinking liquor, or living in or entering a house where liquor is sold. P. W. Dooner, of Los Angeles, was the holder of one-tenth of the ticket in the Louisville Lottery, which drew $75,000 and Dr. E. er Roman, at Jersey City, were poisoned and made very sick last Tuesday by arsenic which had been put in their food. The President of the Brooklyn Street Railroad has issued an order prohibiting all employees of the road from drinking liquor, or living in or entering a house where liquor is sold. P. W. Dooner, of Los Angeles, was the holder of one-tenth of the ticket in the Louisville Lottery, which drew $75,000, and Dr. E. A. Preuss holds a ticket which draws $18,750. A silver gray fox was shot about five miles from Livermore, the other day—the first that had been seen thereabouts for ten years. Four feet two inches from tip to tail was his length. It is reported that at the close of the present session of Congress, Senator Carl Schurz will retire and assume the editorial charge of the St. Louis Westliche Post. Senator Jones of Nevada, who has recently attracted so much attention in the East by his speech on National finance, is reported to be worth $7,000,000. The directors of the Southern District Agricultural Society, at a meeting held in Los Angeles on Monday last, appointed the 28th, 29th and 30th days of May as the time for their annual spring races. To promote Bible study we will mention that a young gentleman lately wrote to a charming miss on a postal card these words: "Second Epistle of John, fifth verse." In the lamentable state of Bible ignorance among postal clerks he was perfectly safe from detection. Governor Bradley of Nevada offers $2,000 reward for the capture of Thomas Hoffron and Chas. Jones; also $500 each for Timothy McNamara, Wm. Forest, David Lynch, T. G. Watson, Elijah Ingram, E. E. Parsons, and John I. Jacks. They are thought to be in California. The Pacific Mail Steamship Company have perfected an arrangement to have one of their steamers leave San Francisco for China every fourteen days, and likewise a steamer from China to San Francisco every fourteen days, and one from San Francisco to New York at the same intervals. The Board of Directors of the Pacific Mail Steamship Company, at a meeting, held in New York on Saturday concluded, in view of the unusual demand now made on their carrying capacity on the Pacific coast to enter into contracts for the leave San Francisco for China every fourteen days, and likewise a steamer from China to San Francisco every fourteen days, and one from San Francisco to New York at the same intervals. The Board of Directors of the Pacific Mail Steamship Company, at a meeting, held in New York on Saturday, concluded, in view of the unusual demand now made on their carrying capacity on the Pacific coast to enter into contracts for the building of four new iron steamers of such capacity as to meet the increasing business. The strong point of Lucy Adams, the variety star, is her song of "Apples for a Penny." While singing it at Acker's Theatre, Troy, she threw several apples with great force and precision at somebody in the audience. One knocked the front teeth out of an excitable man, and he threw it back with equal ability. It struck the star under the eye and she ran behind the scenes screaming. Then Guy Linton, another variety star and Lucy's husband, popped out and offered to fight the man who had hurt her, but he had gone away to have his teeth fixed. The Monterey Democrat says that from the shores of that bay to Sole-dad crossing, a distance of about forty miles, the Salinas valley this year will present an almost unbroken grain field. The area of tilled land comprised within the space indicated will not fall short of 110,000 acres, of which 35,000 are seeded to wheat and 15,000 to barley. With the present prospects afforded by the season, exceptionally favorable so far, together with the fact that so much of the land is absolutely virgin, it would not be unreasonable to calculate the harvest of wheat at twenty cents to the acre, and of barley at forty; which would give of wheat 1,900,000 cents, and of barley, 600,000, making a total of 125,000 tons.
