Southern California SATURDAY, APRIL 4, 1874. MISCELLANEOUS Queen Victoria has nine children and twenty-one grandchildren. The Cambridge Club beat the Oxford in the boat race by four lengths. Dr. Fulton says that "Ananias was rebuked for his short sightedness." That's a new name for it. The Chinese residents of Nevada City subscribed $400 to the Collax, Grass Valley and Nevada City Railroad fund. Ralph Waldo E. nerson has accepted the candidature of the Lord Rectorship of the University of Glasgow, Scotland. From imported Spanish merino sheep, B. F. Watkins, of Santa Clara, realized an average of ten pounds of wool per head. There are nearly 100,000 children employed in the New York workshops and factories, who are living without the slightest opportunity for cultivation and culture. Eli Perkins, so-called, froze his ears in St. Paul the other day, but it is a comfort to know that he has plenty left for next winter's frost to work on. Recent statistics show that the value of the books sold in the German empire amounts to only about one-half of the tax upon the consumption of brandy. At the laying of the corner-stone of the new capitol of Iowa, no speeches were made, except by a workman who got his fingers pinched, and they were brief and to the point. A cinnibar lead, said to be very rich, has lately been discovered on the farm of I. Bluxome, two miles from Cloverdale, Sonoma county, about three hundred yards from the line of the S. F. and N. P. Railroad. The Senate has passed a bill for the relief of Harry Meiggs, the great South American railway king, who left California nineteen years ago a bankrupt and a heavy defaulter. Honorable mention is made of a Maine servant girl who is now serving her eighty-second winter under the same roof. She has washed dishes 89,790 times, and comes yet gaily to her task. Blessed old girl! Peter Van Dyke, an old chap, who died in New Hampshire the other day, worth $140,000 in cash, requested in his will that no one should snuffle and shed crocodile tears at his funeral, but cover him over and hurry home to fight over his money." Cok W. G. Farrel of Covington, Ky., a correspondent of the Cincinnati Commercial, shot and killed Hon. Harvy Meres in Covington on March 27th. Both were very prominent men in Kentucky politics. The shooting was the result of a long standing quarrel. “What would our wives say if they knew where we were?” said the Captain of a schooner when they were beating about in a dense fog, fearful of going ashore. “Humph, I would not mind that,” replied the mate, “if we only knew where we were ourselves.” The Pacific Coast Wool Growers' Association, with a capital of $250,000 in 20,000 shares, has been incorporated lately at San Francisco. Its objects are “to raise, purchase and sell sheep and wool; to lease and purchase sheep ranges, and to acquire such real estate and other property as may be necessary for the purpose of the association.” The bill to provide a ship for the port of San Francisco, in which to train boys for a sea-faring life, has been signed by the Governor Br The Pacific Coast Wool Growers' Association, with a capital of $250,000 in 20,000 shares, has been incorporated lately at San Francisco. Its objects are "to raise, purchase and sell sheep and wool; to lease and purchase sheep ranges, and to acquire such real estate and other property as may be necessary for the purpose of the association." The bill to provide a ship for the port of San Francisco, in which to train boys for a sea-faring life, has been signed by the Governor. By an amendment which was made to the bill, as originally introduced, the project is not to be carried into effect unless the Navy Department furnishes the necessary vessels, properly equipped, to carry out the design of the training school. There are strong hopes that our Congressional delegation will be able to succeed in their efforts to obtain the ship or ships required. We shall probably soon see the horses organizing against the encroachments of John Chinaman. What leads us to this startling belief, is what follows from the Antioch Ledger. "Various methods have been resorted to by tule men for sowing their land with grain. When too soft for horses to tread upon, the practice which has heretofore obtained has been to drive a flock of sheep over the burnt ground in lieu of a harrow. The latest and best method now in vogue is to harrow in the seed with Chinamen. This plan has been adopted by farmers near the Point of Timber, and works well. A rake is made about six feet in length, one Chinaman is placed on either side of the handle and the seed is thus harrowed in a more satisfactory manner than can be done by sheep. Over a thousand acres have thus been cultivated. Ah Sing, a well known Chinaman, has taken several contracts and has now fifty men employed."
