Southern Californian SATURDAY, MARCH 28, 1874. MISCELLANEOUS. Another horse epidemic is ravaging the New York stables. The cost of the Modoc war to the Quartermaster's Department was $355,000. An English sixpence and a handful of powder will buy a wife in Ashantee. D. M. Reavis, of Butte County, Cal., has and will sow 4,000 acres of wheat this season. A Kentuckian has cured himself of consumption of the lungs by the consumption of a spoonful of kerosene daily. Wheeling, W. V., brewers report a largely increased demand for beer since the approach of the whisky-zootic. The County Treasurer has redeemed $7,100 of our 1861 bonds as follows: $6,450 at 98 75-100 and $650 at 93%. Smoking is not prohibited in the Kentucky Senate chamber, and noble Senators lustily ply their pipes while considering how best to govern their fellow-citizens. A pack of wolves in Sherbourne county, Minnesota, chased a couple of lawyers five miles, and the New Orleans Republican thinks it a lack of professional courtesy. To preserve flowers, put a pinch of nitrate of soda into the water every day when it is changed. This will preserve flowers for a fortnight. Nitrate of potash in powder has nearly the same effect. A fig orchard at Mormon Island. A pack of wolves in Sherbourne county, Minnesota, chased a couple of lawyers five miles, and the New Orleans Republican thinks it a lack of professional courtesy. A fig orchard at Mormon Island, Sacramento County, Cal., contains 1,000 bearing trees of the white Smyrna variety. A full grown tree produces three crops during the season; the second bearing the largest. Assembly Bill 430, has passed both houses. It provides that vineyards, orchards and everything rooted to the ground, shall be hereafter taxed with the land as real estate, instead of a separate listment as at present. The bridal outfit of an expectant bride of Troy, New York, was seized by the Customs authorities of New York city last Saturday for non-payment of duties. The outfit was manufactured by Worth in Paris, and the lace on it was valued at $3,000. The Senate bill authorizing the Board of Supervisors of Los Angeles county to purchase a farm in the city of Los Angeles, and to build and establish a County Almshouse and Hospital and to issue bonds for the payment thereof, has passed both houses. A Granger says that where the Welsh parson in "Merry Wives of Windsor" exclaims: "But stay, I smell a man of middle earth," the true reading is evidently: "But stay I smell a middle man of earth." He infers that William Shakespeare was a Granger, and held middle men in bad odor. The large number of new quicksilver mines being developed in this State is a matter of considerable importance, as a great amount of capital is seeking investment in this direction. Recently quite a number of companies have been organized in different localities with an aggregate capital stock of several million dollars. A Pittsburg reporter has been "interviewing" John B. Gough on the subject of the women's temperance crusade. He said he was "on the fence" in the matter. He would be unwilling to take any active part in the affair, and would not see his wife or his nieces going among the saloons, praying and singing hymns. He thought the movement A Pittsburg reporter has been "interviewing" John B. Gough on the subject of the women's temperance crusade. He said he was "on the fence" in the matter. He would be unwilling to take any active part in the affair, and would not see his wife or his nieces going among the saloons, praying and singing hymns. He thought the movement would help the woman suffrage cause very much, and he had always had a sort of dislike to the woman suffrage business. The idea of a band of ladies going through the streets singing hymns and praying was repugnant to him. It was the duty of a policeman to clear away a crowd of men obstructing the pavement and he thought the women came under the same restrictions. A good little boy out West undertook to come the G. Washington on his mother in this way: He cut off the cat's head with the traditional hatchet, and then hid the defunct feline in the meal barrel. When the old lady went for meal to make the "hoe cake" for the frugal morning repast, she discovered that cat, and interviewed her little son. He said: "I did it, mother, with my little batchet, but I'll be swizzled if I can tell the whole truth about this little affair." Now most mothers would have kissed that brave, truthful lad on his noble brow, and kept right on using the meal out of that barrel just the same, but this one didn't. She said: "Come across my lap, my son; come across my lap." He came, and for awhile there arose a cloud of dust from the seat of his traweers that effectually hid the son from view, and the old woman now sports goggles and is lavish in the use of Pettit's eye salve. That good little boy had peppered the seat of his pants. HOTELS, RESTAURANTS, ETC LANTERS' HOTEL NANE LOS ANGELES AND CENTRE STREETS, ANAHEIM, CAL. C. HIGBY & CO., Proprietors.
