Judge Edmonds, who for so many years has been a burning and igniting light among the spirit sends to the Herald what puts to be a communication from the spirit of the late Judge Peck one of the victims of the Virgina Havre disaster. The community is in the form of a letter, and with an apology for "waiving ceremony," while it closes craving pardon for the length of letter — two formulas which would think, disembodied might dispense with, as save too much of the earth, earthy, ghostly epistle contains the fortable information that the died victims of the Villa de disaster died painlessly. GENIUS FROM BROKEN HEADS.—A writer in the British Colonist notes various instances of the transmutation of idiocy into genius by head-breaking accidents. The great German Wallenstein is said to have been but a half-witted child, until a fall from a window and consequent cerebral fracture suddenly redeemed his intellectual nature. The famous Mabilen was irreclaimably idiotic until in his nineteenth year, when a fall down a stone staircase turned him into a genius. In an English lunatic asylum one patient struck another a tremendous blow on the bridge of the nose, and from that moment the stricken man rapidly regained his sound mind. In fact one of the old English remedies for imbecility and madness was a revolving swing, whirling around a hundred times in a minute. The patient was strapped helplessly to a machine, which, after hundreds of dizzying revolutions, was stopped with a frightful jerk, at the very height of its velocity. And there is indisputable evidence that many astonishing cures were wrought thereby.

There are not disposed to quarrel with Chinese pharmacopoeia, nor exceptions to what they may use medical curatives. There are many disgusting drugs in them, even to a strong healthy man, and nothing but the debilish accompanies sickness never induce any person to buy them. A slight retrospect medicine and surgery, as practiced almost civilized countries only,ERY and a half ago, would fill order with unbounding surprise,IMBUING him with profound insight for the superstitions of arts and practitioners of the world and not a little misgiving lest of them should be in vogue present day. Among the ones which enter largely into the position of nearly all the mediated by the higher classes in this ginsong root, which is so prized that volumes have been written on its surpassing power and it has received the long titles of "pure spirit of the land" and "the plant that gives vitality." This latter distinction may be equally ascribed to any one which produces death, as the shortest road to immorality. Certain it is, however, that the root is held in such high tension that it commands more three times its weight in pure form in the markets of China. It also been introduced into Japan as great success. The botanical of this plant is panax quinium; it is herbaceous, upright, about a foot high, and is very hard in its conformation. It is wild in the wooded and mountainous regions of Tartary, on latitudes 39° and 47° and is used by the Chinese and Tarayans.
