MISCELLANEOUS.
"Come, live in my heart and pay no rint," was the Irishman's formula of popping the question; and it has never been improved upon so far as heard from.
Simkins playfully remarked to his wife that he had four fools: "Beautifool, dutifool, youthfool and delightfool." "Poor me," said she, "I have but one."
Sam Brannan proposes to plant this year from 100 to 150 acres of broom corn, and informs the Napa Reporter that there will be about 300 acres planted in the vicinity of Calistoga.
The Memphis Appeal which was so celebrated on the rebel side during the war, is in favor of compulsory education. In that city there are 6,400 children who do not go to school. That is frightful.
A sheep-raiser near Carlin, Nevada, lost 6,000 muttons during the late cold spell. One thousand died in one night, cleaning him out and leaving him $20,000 poorer than formerly.
The blackbirds are singing on the tops of the houses over at Battle mountain on the desert, trying to make folks believe spring has come. But they cant fool any of the sagaious and shivering inhabitants thereabouts.

The blackbirds are singing on the tops of the houses over at Battle mountain on the desert, trying to make folks believe spring has come. But they cant fool any of the sagaious and shivering inhabitants thereabouts.
Scientific writers inform us that there are no less than 1,500 species of the Castor-oil plant. The properties of these castor-oil plants are remarkably varied, some are highly valued on account of their medicinal uses while others are poisonous.
It appears from statistics of last year just published that the total area of land in France is upward of 125,000,000 acres; divided as follows: Arable land, 62,500,000; Pasture land, 12,500,000 acres; Vines, 5,000,000 acres; Gardens and orchards, 5,000,000 acres; Waste lands, 20,000,000 acres.
The Kansas Wool-Growers' Association have appointed a committee to carry out the provision of a resolution recently adopted, and which provides that "there shall be held the coming Spring somewhere in the State of Kansas or Missouri a public shearing whereby shall be shown to the public the quality, length and weight of the wool growth of one sheep in one year." It has also been decided "to prepare a 'Book of Pedigree,' or herd book to contain a full account of all blooded stock shown at fairs, exhibitions or at any public show whatever."
At a very successful seance in Cincinnati, the other night, a man burst into tears when the medium described very accurately a tall, blue-eyed spirit standing by him, with light side whiskers and hair parted in the middle. "Do you know him?" inquired a man at his side, in a sympathetic whisper. "Know him? I guess I do," replied the unhappy man, wiping his eyes. "He was engaged to my wife. If he hadn't died he would have been her husband instead of me. Oh, George, George!" he murmured in a voice choked with emotion, "why did you peg out."
The following is the text of a bill which has passed both Houses, received the signature of the Governor, and is now a law of the State:
Section 1. It shall not be lawful for any person or persons keeping a public house, saloon or drinking place, either licensed or unlicensed, to sell, give away, or furnish spirits or malt liquors, wine, or any other intoxicating beverages, on any part of any day set apart, or to be set apart, for any general or special election by the citizens in any formerly.

The Kern county Conrier says: Several of our farmers have adopted a novel and, as they allege, more successful way of sowing alfalfa. Wherever the ground is reasonably level and there is no sod, they simply sow the seed, without plowing," and afterward go over it a few times with a barrow. In this way it requires less seed to the acre, and comes up more evenly, quicker and better. Alfalfa seed does not bear to be deeply covered, and much of it will always be buried too deeply in ground that has been plowed, in whatever manner it may be manipulated. In this way the seed is all covered about the right depth and the least possible quantity wasted, while the subsequent growth of the grass, it is believed, will be quite as good as if the ground had been previously placed in a state of the most perfect tilth. It is so natural to this soil and grows with such luxuriance that it is believed to be entirely independent of this consideration of the soil after it once takes root.
