Southern Californian
SATURDAY, MARCH 14, 1874.
MISCELLANEOUS.
Fort Halaski, Ga., is being mounted with 15-inch guns.
There is to be a monster demonstration at Hyde Park, England, on the 15th inst., in favor of amnesty to incarcerated Fenians.
It is stated that Don Carlos has been proclaimed King of Spain, and that his coronation will take place in the cathedral at Bilbao.
One thousand sacks of wheat are daily converted into flour at Starr's Mill, South Vallejo. A new mill is to be erected by the side of the old one.
The shipments of Oysters to California in 1873, from Shoal Water Bay, Washington Territory, amounted to 112,800 baskets.
At a meeting of the iron manufacturers in England, the propriety of raising the price of sheet iron is being discussed.
The whole production of the precious metals throughout the world during 1873 is estimated as having been worth $219,000,000.
There does not seem to be any abatement of the famine in India. In one village of Eastern Tishost, eighteen deaths from starvation occurred in four days.
Such terrible and continuous snow storms have prevailed in Midland county, Utah, that all the feed has been covered up, and cattle are starving daily.
Operations are still continued at the beet sugar factory at Alvarado. The product of sugar for the season is expected to reach one million pounds.

Operations are still continued at the beet sugar factory at Alvarado. The product of sugar for the season is expected to reach one million pounds.
It is stated that there is stacked between Greeley and Green city, Colorado, three million tons of hay, almost worthless, on account of there being do means of getting it to market.
The Secretary of the Treasury has officially asked the House of Representatives for $20,000 to assist the Indians of Shasta county, California, who are in a starving condition.
Dates from San Antonio, Texas, state that Sam Wolf, the Kiowa Chief, is organizing a strong war party near Fort Sill, to invade Texas and avenge the death of his son, who was killed in a fight with Lieutenant Hudson's party on the west fork of the Nueces river.
A Kentucky Grange has had its little romance. Recently a young brother and sister of the Order walked to the front of the Master and was united in marriage. The entire audience was taken by surprise, having had no intimation that there was to be a wedding. Soft eyes began to dart love glances around the Grange, and diffident bachelors exclaimed that the new Order now exceeded their most sanguine expectations.
The Bulletin of the 5th had the following: Judge Wiseman addressed the Assembly Committee on Counties and County Boundaries last night in favor of creating the county of Orange out of the southern part of Los Angeles. The Judge brought facts and figures in support of his arguments, and challenged the delegation to reply to them. The meeting of the committee was held in the Assembly Chamber, and if the strength of the Judge's arguments bear any ratio to the power of his voice, they are unanswerable. It is expected that the committee, of which Tully of Monterey is chairman, will report favorably of the bill.

Assemblyman Murphy has introduced an Act to prevent monopoly of the timber and grazing lands in the State of California. The bill provides that no person shall own more than 240 acres of timber land nor more than 1,280 acres of grazing land. Persons now owning more than said amounts of land may retain possession thereof during the term of their natural lives. If any person becomes the owner of more land than is allowed in this Act, he must dispose of the same within five years of its acquisition. Any person violating the provisions of this Act, forfeits title to all the lands held contrary to said provisions, and such lands as are wrongfully held shall become the property of the State. It was referred to the committee on Land Monopoly.
The Hollister Advance says: The freight train on Thursday last carried from here one of the largest plows that have ever been made. Its destination is Kern county. It was manufactured at Souther's ranch at San Felipe, and is unquestionably a sound piece of workmanship. The plow is intended to cut three feet deep by five feet wide at the top, and to be drawn by eighty horses. We doubt whether it will be practically a success. There is a limit to the capacity of working huge machines, as has been proved in balloons as well as ships. Dean Swift has truly said, "two and two don't always make four." This mammoth plow has been christened the "Great Western," after the great ship of the same name. It cost $800, and weighs thirty-seven hundred.
