Father Junipero and his immature successors are to be found in Mission gardens of San Gabriel at old San Bernardino. Those San Gabriel are 70 or 80 years old and are still bearing well. His long time, even after the coat was settled by Americans, erroneous impression prevailed none but the few favored spells the State settled by the Missions were adapted to orange cuz This error has now, however fully exploded, and oranges successfully grown from county to San Diego, both in vine and foot-bill counties. These viable facts have been demonstrated accident rather than design, they are none the less valuable instructive. The experience of the past year has demonstrated that the oranges much harder and will bear a cooler temperature than the vine. With the vines in Anaheim and Angeles were greatly injured late frosts last spring, the oranges escaped entirely uninjured the orange crop of the present son is one of the best and plentiful ever produced. Oranges have been successfully grown in open air on the Sierra Nevadas, elevation of 2,500 to 3,500 where snow falls frequently in winter. There is no danger of production being greater than demand. In 1872 the home product and importation were equal. In 1871-2, there passed the Los Angeles and San Francisco railroad 21,008 boxes of orange 200 to the box. The number of oranges received in San Francisco for three past years from southern counties have been as low: Oranges received in 1871 1,665,450; oranges received in 1871-2,470,387; oranges recorded in 1872-3,1,575,435. From for parts there were received in 4,994,948 oranges, and in 4,000,000. The above statement show that, with no increase in population or facilities for reaching more extended market, we double the present production equal the home demand. The development of the railroad system and the increase of population greatly extend the market adapt to orange culture, is drained, rich alluvial. From its sixty trees to the acre is sufficient. Most of the orange orchards in southern counties are naturally ungrafted, and it is believed that make the larger, better and longer lived trees. Grafted trees sooner. For a time, even after the country led by Americans the impression prevailed that the few favored spots in settled by the Missions adapted to orange culture. has now, however, been collected, and oranges are "Golden Opinions" of the Grangers. The doings of the National Grange of the Patrons of Husbandry at St. Louis have been pretty closely watched by our national politicians of both parties. So far as I have been able to gather their opinions, the Democrats are generally down in the mouth over the platform just adopted. They seem to be annoyed at the evident sincerity of that plank which so explicitly disclaims any connection between that Order and politics. They had hoped—may, they still hope, by some manner of means—either to get the Grangers to nominate a third party candidate for the Presidency during the next Presidential campaign, or else to secure the support of the Grangers for their own party candidate. But they find small comfort from this St. Louis platform. However, it is their only hope of any possibility of making a respectable fight—and, of course, like drowning men, they catch at the straw. And, as he is supposed to be in good repute among Grangers, Democratic eyes look to Senator Thurman as the most avail- nunipero and his immediate ties are to be found in the gardens of San Gabriel and San Bernardino. For a even after the country called by Americans the impression prevailed that the few favored spots in the settled by the Missions adapted to orange culture. Her has now, however, been embedded, and oranges are fully grown from Butte San Diego, both in valley hill counties. These valuhave been demonstrated by rather than design, but none the less valuable and este. Experience of the past season illustrated that the orange is older and will bear a colder more than the vine. While in Anaheim and Los were greatly injured by last spring, the orange spied entirely uninjured, and crop of the present seasage of the best and most ever produced. It is well known that the yearly layers or the rings by which the age of a tree is determined, do not diminish in relative thickness by a constant law. A paper was recently read before the French Academy of Sciences in which the causes of this irregularity were discussed. The writer concluded that the data of meteo-logical phenomena, when known and tabulated, might be compared year by year with the annual layers formed in different varieties of trees. A paper was recently read before the French Academy of Sciences in which the causes of this irregularity were discussed. The writer concluded that the data of meteorological phenomena, when known and tabulated, might be compared year by year with the annual layers formed in different varieties of trees. From such comparison some ideas as to the laws of development of trees may be obtained, and these laws being established, trees might become collections of meteorological evidence where observations cannot be made. An exchange suggests a rather striking example of what might be learned from ancient trees: "Suppose that there should be found in Egypt a very old though living tree, the origin of which dated back to the time of Joseph. If on cutting the trunk the rings corresponding to that period showed seven thick and seven thin layers, there would be tangible evidence of the Scriptural tradition of the seven years of plenty and seventy years of lamine, besides of the immediate causes of humidity; temperature, etc., to which such phenomena might be due." Viewing trees in this light, they may indeed become historians of the past. A cheap fence is a thing much sought after. A good, effective, light and cheap fence can be built as follows: Take redwood posts, four by four, and four feet long. Put them in the ground four feet apart, and one and a half feet deep. This will leave the posts thirty inches high. Run a rail along the top of the posts and nail fast. The rail may be two by two, or even three by one, a common form. Then take pickets four feet long, drive them into the ground three inches apart. Nail to the rails and you have a fence that will answer every purpose and last a lifetime.
