SATURDAY, FEBRUARY 21, 1874.
MISCELLANEOUS.
Utah Territory is free from debt and has $35,655,47 in the treasury.
C. L. King, State Deputy of Granges in Michigan, writes that the number of Granges in Michigan now exceed 200, and that the applications come in thicker than ever. The calls on the National Grange exceed 100 per day.
The water works in California foot up thus: 656 irrigating ditches, from which 119,994 acres of land were irrigated; and 780 mining ditches, having an aggregate length of 4,888 miles, supplying 220,187 inches of water per day.
Blood may tell, but not hen's blood. A man up in Carson has one dozen hens of the common dung-hill stock, which furnished last year, 1014 eggs. Where is the dozen of aristocratic, long-legged, fancy stock that can beat this?
The Republicans of Texas are considering a plan to divide that State into two States—Eastern and Western Texas. This would make a Republican and Democratic State. Some of the Republicans propose to introduce an enrolling act into Congress for this purpose, in accordance with the precedent in the State of West Virginia.
Precautionary measures have been taken by which vines and fruit trees shall not be imported from France into Switzerland, unless they are accompanied by certificates declaring that the districts whence they are sent have not been ravaged by the Phylloxera vastetric.

A tale of two Norristown husbands: One upon leaving his office the other night, stopped at a bookstore, and paid $125 for an article; and went home and presented his wife with "A Pair of Blue Eyes," the other, after leaving his office stopped at a saloon, paid $125 for whisky, and went home and gave his wife a pair of black eyes.
A twig from an orange tree was brought to San Francisco recently, from the ranch of Caleb Carriger in Sonoma county. The twig had six large and handsome oranges in a single cluster, and was plucked from a tree carrying 350 oranges. Farmers in Sonoma county are at present giving great attention to the culture of oranges.
An illuminated cross is to surmount the spire of St. Malachi's Church, in Cleveland. It will be the only one in the United States, and is to be lighted on special occasions. The steeple is 243 feet high, and we would pity the lamp-lighter, only that the lighting is to be done by electricity.
Tea is now extensively raised in Hindoostan, the exports to England in 1872 exceeding 16,000,000 pounds. The India teas are of rare flavor, and are used by English shopkeepers to mix with the Chinese. The culture in the Indies is now carried on by joint stock companies, which are now paying from ten to twenty per cent. dividends.
Don Juan De Costa, a gentleman of Bogota, New Granada, in Central America, is reported to have found on one of his estates, a monumental stone, erected by a small colony of Phoenicians from Sidonia, in the year nine or ten, of the reign of Hiram, contemporary of Solomon, about ten centuries before the Christian era. The block has an inscription of eight lines, written in fine characters, but without separation of words or punctuation.
It is stated that the Granger members of the Missouri Legislature will act as a unit on all questions of financial policy and political reforms, without regard to their former positions.

The block has an inscription of eight lines, written in fine characters, but without separation of words or punctuation.
It is stated that the Granger members of the Missouri Legislature will act as a unit on all questions of financial policy and political reforms, without regard to their former political associations, and that they will introduce bills providing for cheaper railroad rates, and for the semi annual payment of taxes. They also propose to establish Granger's banks at St. Louis and other cities in the State, and to pack their own hogs next season.
Whilst using ammonia for washing or cleaning articles of clothing care should be taken that no cut or scratch comes in contact with it, and the hands should be immediately washed and wiped before going into the air. A case of severe erysipelas had recently come before our notice, caused by washing some garments in water in which ammonia has been dissolved, and going into the sun to hang them to dry without washing or wiping the hands.
Sargent has introduced a bill in the U.S. Senate, which proposes to establish at Washington, under direction of the Interior Department, a Bureau of Health, the general design and duties of which shall be to acquire and diffuse among the people of the United States useful information upon subjects connected with the preservation of health, and to assist whenever called upon, the several States and Territories in the establishment of efficient sanitary and quarantine systems and regulations. The Bureau to be in charge of a Commissioner, to be appointed, at a salary of $4,000 per annum, and who is to be assisted by three clerks.

THE LOS ANGELES Daily and Weekly Herald.
The HERALD is an unhought advocate of every interest pertaining to Southern California and Arizona, and a realous worker in all things that shall tend to benefit the State. In a word, it is in close communion with the People. In its columns from time to time, are found matters of interest to the California Farmer, Mechanic Merchant, Liberty, and all classes of producers; and it will also contain reading matter suited to the Home Circle.
The HERALD will advocate State Rights and oppose Centralization; it will encourage White and oppose Gunile Immigrations. It will favor Free Trade and oppose Protective far if it will advocate a Greenback Currency for California, and oppose the present dwathing and deadening policy which upholds the present rainaous rates of interest, and shuts out Eastern capital. It will advocate the People and oppose Monopolies, no matter what guise they may assume.
The HERALD will oppose tlbeting and publication. No man rightly owns a delibur until he earns it. Every dollar which is taken from the public treasury or private purse without a just return is robbery, and he who takes this money is in thief. Believing his, the HERALD will oppose salary steals, custom steals, land steals, railroad steals and every kind of Straits.
Each day, the fullest Foreign and Domestic Telegrams will be published. The aim will be to supply in this part of the State. The demand hereafter filed by San Francisco dailies.
