HOTELS, RESTAURANT
MISCELLANEOUS.
The South has three hundred and seventy-nine woolen factories.
The case involving the county seat of Kern county, has been decided in favor of Bakersfield.
Three-fourths of the town of Yuma was submerged by a late freshet in the Colorado river.
Sheriff Morse's son, who has been on trial at Oakland for setting fire to, and burning McClure's Military Academy, has been acquitted.
The legislators of West Virginia recently passed a law "to prevent the owners of hogs from running at large."
The State Grange of Georgia met at Atlanta on the 21st inst. Seventy Granges were represented by five hundred delegates.
A railway bridge is to be built across the Frith of Forth, Scotland, which will be the most stupendous work of the kind in the world.
The Directors of the Texas and Pacific railway are confident of obtaining the Congressional aid, asked for.
At Bloomington, Ill., the children of the miners are taken down into the shaft of a mine when attacked with whooping cough, and in a short time are entirely well.
A Frenchman professes to have discovered, by experiment on himself, that coffee taken upon an empty stomach renders the mind abnormally clear and the temper unnaturally bad.

A Frenchman professes to have discovered, by experiment on himself, that coffee taken upon an empty stomach renders the mind abnormally clear and the temper unnaturally bad.
The Choctaws and Cherokees, of Indian Territory, raised 5,000 bales of cotton this season—more than twice last year's crop—most of which will go to the St. Louis market.
The Congressional Committee on Agriculture will not only oppose any reduction of the appropriations for the Agricultural Bureau, but will recommend that they be increased.
The new Capitol at Albany was commenced on an estimate, by competent architects, that it could be completed for $4,000,000. There has already been expended, to bring it up one story, nearly five millions, and now it is estimated that it will cost $15,000,000 to complete it.
Officers have an original way of justifying out in Arkansas. The Sheriff of Sebastian county, the other day, appeared before the Board of Supervisors with his official bond, and placing two pistols on the table, invited them to approve it. They recklessly adjourned, and now fifty bold citizens are in hot search of the would-be Sheriff.
Senator Pendegast, in his remarks on the Bell expulsion matter, had occasion to quote that sublime phrase, "Everything is lovely and the goose hangs high." He, however, made the following improvement: "I suppose we might just as well conclude that everything is lovely, and that the bird of the goose-quill sort is suspended above the dome of the Capitol at a perfect immensity of altitude."
A Wharf at Anaheim.
It is said that Michael Reese contemplates the erection of a wharf at Anaheim Landing. We hope so Anaheim would be a nearer and in every way better shipping point for us than Wilmington. There can, undoubtedly, be as good if not a better landing made at Anaheim, than any which can possibly be constructed at Banningville. The present rates of freights on the Wilmington ferry is extortionate, all but ruinous to business men; nor is there the slightest prospect of a change for the better. On the railway the swindle commenced at Wilmington is carried out to the letter. Passengers are charged $2.50
every way better shipping point for us than Wilmington. Passengers are charged $250 fare for a ride of twelve miles, and for freights the charges are heaped on in proportion. In fact, the Wilmington slough, and the Los Angeles one-horse railway, are the biggest commercial "bilks" in California or any other State. There is hardly a doubt but that when the "cars" commence running to Spadra, the bilk business will be carried on along the line. Our business men now apprehend that under the new regulations, they will be worse off that when teaming was their only means of transportation. If this proves to be so, our only remedy, at least for the present, is to import and export via Anaheim. With a good road to San Diego, we would be entirely independent of the slough, but there seems no immediate prospect of one being built Anaheim is much nearer to us than Los Angeles, and there is already an excellent road leading there. If Mr. Reese will push the construction of his wharf immediately, and adopt a reasonable rate of fares and freights, he will find both the importers and exporters of this rapidly growing county ripe for a transfer of their business from Wilmington to Anaheim. The merchants of Anaheim should also move energetically in the matter.—San Bernardino Guardian.

THE LOS ANGELES Daily and Weekly Herald.
The HERALD is an unbought advocate of every interest pertaining to Southern California and Arizona, and a zealous worker in all things that shall tend to benefit the State. In a word, it is in a good communion with the People. In its columns from time to time, are found matters of interest to the California Farmer, Mechanic, Merchant, Laborer, and all classes of producers; and it will also contain reading matter suited to the Home Circle.
The HERALD will advocate State Rights and oppose Centralization; it will encourage White and oppose Cootle Immigration. It will favor Free Trade and oppose Protective Tariff; it will advocate a GreenbackCurrency for California, and oppose the present dwarfing and deadening policy which upholds the present reinsurance rates of interest and abuts out Eastern capital. It will advocate the People and oppose Monopolies, no matter what guise they may assume.
The HERALD will oppose thieving and peckulation. No man rightly owns a dollar until he earns it. Every dollar which is taken from the public treasury or private purse without a just return in robbery, and he who takes this money is a thief. Believing his, the HERALD will oppose salary steals, custom steals, land steals, railroad steals and every kind of Steals.
Each day, the fullest Foreign and Domestic Telegrams will be published. The aim will be to supply in this part of the State, the demand hereof, filed by San Francisco dailies. No trouble or expense will be spared to make the HERALD, in this respect, equal to any newspaper on the coast. It will also contain a full Review of the Local and Foreign Markets, and the Trades generally, honestly and carefully compiled.
