The Iowa State Grange at recent session, passed a resolution recommending a Legislative which would do away with land sales, and prevent to some extent the accumulation of real estate the hands of the few. The thrust of the movers is, that these laws upon which taxes are not paid forfeited to the State and should subject to entry the same as other public landes, only at their real value.
We are inclined to fall in with this view, as it seems to overcome gross evil and effectually guild against another. In arranging details we should say, that in this days after taxes have bee made in linquent, the State shall take possession of the land, and hold subject to redemption until deprived taxes shall have accrued nearly equal to its real value, where it may be sold at not less than appraised price. This may not exactly the best thing, but subject is worth thinking about — California Granger.

AGRICULTURAL SELECTIONS.
"The hemp fields on the Colorado river, says the Yuma Sentinel," are attracting much attention from capitalists, both American and Mexican. Two large companies are now organized and in operation, and we hear of others in embryo. The fields are exceedingly extensive, commencing about twelve miles below Yuma, and extending from there to the mouth of the river, a distance of ninety miles. We wish the enterprise unbounded success."
Attorney General Williams has written to Senator Sargent denying the assertion in the memorial of the Los Angeles Chamber of Commerce, that he had rendered a decision to the effect that tropical and semitropical fruits for consumption can be admitted free of duty. The question has not been considered by his department, and he is not aware that any such decision has ever been rendered by any other department of Government.

The question has not been considered by his department, and he is not aware that any such decision has ever been rendered by any other department of Government.
As throwing some light upon the influence of forests, it may be well to state that in 1868 a destructive fire, probably ignited by the Indians, swept over the greater portion of San Diego county. Prior to that time the mesa in the immediate neighborhood of the city, was covered with a very luxuriant growth of brushwood, far higher and thicker than that which may be observed on the Peninsula today. All the hills around about were blackened by the devouring flames. Since that time, until this year, there has been no rainy season in San Diego.
In small fruits the failure to cultivate, and cultivate thoroughly, is to fail of getting any return for the planting. All growers of strawberries and raspberries understand this, but all do not act upon it; but those who do astonish us with their results, and we are apt to conclude that if their plants are not a shade different, their soil at least is, and to this the success is at once attributed. We, of course, admit a difference in soil, but not to such an extent as many suppose there exists. The result can be wonderfully varied by good or indifferent culture. We know of a plantation of Doo-little raspberries that were set out three years ago, and when two years old, a portion of the ground was sold and a dividing line drawn across the raspberry rows. The parts of rows remaining to the original planter received their usual thorough and timely culture, while those parts of the same rows falling to the new purchaser, were almost entirely neglected, and the difference was so great, that no one would oppose they were planted at the same time, and of the same variety. But still a greater difference was visible the past season in the crops of fruit of these two patches, the cultivated end of the patch having ten times as much fruit as the other end that was but poorly cultivated.

At a meeting of the Sonoma and Napa Vinicultural Club, held on the 10th of January, the following statements as to the cost of vineyards was made by the members named:
Attella Haraszthy, $224 50 per acre, without staking or cost of stakes, for a four year old vineyard.
Mr. McPherson Hill, that every acre of his vineyard cost $800 at four years old without the value of the land.
Wm. Hood stated that his vineyard cost, per acre, $225 without the value of the land.
Leonard Goss stated that the cost of his vineyard per acre was $195 62, with no cost for draining or clearing land or removing stumps; the land having been cleared and cultivated when bought.
Mr. Craig stated that his vineyard cost more than the estimate made by Major Snyder—$225 per acre.
Mr. Goss said that the estimate by Major Snyder was below rather than above, the actual cost, as stated by him.
Mr. Haraszthy reported the average quantity of grapes per vine on his land was eight pounds.
Mr. Craig reports his vineyard producing eight pounds per vine on an average.
Mr. Hood reports eight pounds per vine as the produce of his vineyard.
Mr. Hill gave ten pounds per vine as the average of his vineyard.
Major Snyder gave the average of his as eight pounds per vine, and upon that his estimate was based.
The Club fully indulges Major Snyder's statement as below the actual cost, rather than above it.
