According to Surveyor- General's report, California had last summer, 18,000 Angora goats, and we should have had times as many if the mohair proved profitable, for they been bred here more than ten y But fleeces of the Angora goat California occupy no noteworth place among the exports of State, and the animal is breed present more in hope than in evidence-at least with a majority owners." STEWART & HILL, Carriage and Wagon There is much truth in the going remarks, but the writer abide has gone further, and given reasons why failure has attended many. The facts are simply those who made the first attempt were almost wholly ignorant of business. They had not inform themselves of the peculiar conditions indispensable to the success raising of Angora goats, but argue from the general principles we obtain for the breeding of shrey They were also beset with American procivity of desiring make money faster than cool junction will warrant, to force na rather than cultivate her capability As a consequence pure-blooded gora bucks were mated with common goats, were kept in service long, and the bucks of the sixth seventh crossing were made to some the places of their pure-blooded progenitors, and frequent palmed off upon the unwary being the genuine article of such treatment was erroneous, and could only result disappointment and loss. Recently however, a few intelligent and termined gentlemen have entered into the business with a full stall of accurate information, and flooring of the finest breed goats. Thus they have no reason to regret undertaking, but are pushing ahead with every prospect of reaping rich reward. In no case should grade buck be used for any purpose but yielding the mohair on his or body, and the flesh of his or bones. In every instance when propagation of the species is sought a full-blood, pure-bred Angora but should be selected, and his term service should not exceed six years. The mohair obtained after repeat crossings of pure Angora bucks are the common goat is a superior arlele of commerce, and a source wealth to the proprietor; but even attempt to obtain the mohair commerce from the service of grabbucks, even if mated to a pru Angora female, will inevitably result in disaster. — Commerce Herald. The Grangers in District County assembled with the Los Angeles Grange, and had a very important and harmonious session. The chief matter under discussion was the establishment of an Agricultural Exposition for Southern California. It was resolved to form an Association with a capital of $50,000, divided into 2,000 shares each representing $25. Articles of incorporation were adopted and other arrangements for perfecting the organization made. The following Directors were named; J. F. Maughus, J. J. Morton, J. A. Nichols, L. W. Atchinson, J. T. Gordon, Q. A. Stanley, J. S. Thomson, Evey, J. E. McComas, H. L. Mongomery, A. B. Hayward. The name of the organization is "The Agricultural Exposition of Southern California." Nearly the whole day was passed in making these arrangements, and in planning and preparing for the new organization. Was made known that Mr. Ilix had proposed to donate 80 acres land for the use of the Association if the buildings would be located on the grounds. Other parties made statements of the same nature, but the location of the grounds is here after to be determined by the Board of Directors—Los Angeles Heard. The value of wheat and flour shipped from San Francisco and Oakland during the present season amounts to $25,000,000. Humboldt county farmers are holding their potatoes for a rise. The total cost of fences in California is $29,000,000. Annual cost of same, including repairs and interest $8,000,000. An enormous cinnamon bear weighing 600 pounds was killed recently in Napa county. He had been carrying off a farmer's sheep, hogs and horses, and at length the agriculturist laid for and slew him. The Assembly is horribly worried over the gopher question, which seems to us easy enough of solution. Nothing to do but catch the animals and cut their heads off. In Castro valley, Alameda county there is a forest of Australian gum trees covering over 100 acres. The trees were planted only three and a half years ago, and some have attained a height of fifty feet and a diameter of twelve inches. According to the Rural Sun, sheep-killing dogs may be cured by suspending the dog from the top of a pen, so that its fore-feet will be about four inches from the floor and then letting the oldest buck in the flock exercise his butting propensities on him. It is said to be an effectual cure. A cheap mode of getting barley from this State to the Mississippi valley would immediately double our annual grain value. A St. Louis brewer recently bought in our market 500 tons of barley, for which he paid freight 24 cents, or $500 curry per carload to St. Louis. That or him more than St. Louis barley, but the superior quality of the California grain compensated him. California will this year produce over 12,000,000 gallons of wine, valued at $3,500,000, 2,000,000 pounds of grapes for table use, and 250,000 pounds of raisins. Forty thousand acres in California are devoted to the cultivation of the grape crop, and it is estimated that 8,000,000 acres of land in the State are especially adapted to grape culture. Grapes sold in St. Louis the past season, for wine-making, at $175 per ton. The varieties used were mostly Catawba, Concord and Isabella. It is not to be supposed that the wine produced was the pure juice of the grape; but that the principal value of the grape-juice was to give the grape flavor to the article, manufactured principally from other ingredients. At the election of the Southern District Agricultural Association on Saturday, the following officers were elected for the ensuing year: J. G. Downey, President; I. W. Hellman, Treasurer; B. C. Truman, Secretary; J. J. Griffin, L. J. Rose, Geo. R Butler, Wm. Furguson, Wm. H. Workman, O. W. Childs, H. D. Barrows, Trustees, Mr. Dryden, a member of Enterprise Grange, and also a stockholder, addressed the meeting and stated that there was a movement among the farmers either to fraternize with the Society or to start one of their own. He thought, however, that they would very much prefer to join the Society if they could get control of the stock. Mr. Childs, Mr. Rose, Mr. Hellman, and other gentlemen stated that if the farmers in this county or district will take the 221 shares remaining unsold, they will contribute from Agricultural Fair. Does Farming Pay?—By a large portion of our agricultural readers this question will be answered in the negative. And yet the answer would not be correct. Farming is beginning to mean something. The question of profit depends more on the man than on the farm. Put a genuine, energetic, thinking farmer on a poor farm, and he will make the farm and himself rich. Put a poor, unthinking, unsystematic man on the best farm in the State, and the farm will go to weeds and the owner to bankruptcy. Farming does pay, but sloth and incompetency reap their natural fruit, as they should. Hard work, merely of itself, seldom wins. A man may be industrious and economical all his life, and die poor. The world calls him unlucky—a soft word for a disease that ought to be called by some harsher term. The question of farming solves itself in the management and not in the business. We could refer you to a thousand farmers in Iowa among the wealthy, who never complain of their business not paying, and who have made their thousands on the farm. Not, however, by merely raising wheat and corn, and hauling to market. They put life and thought and enterprise into their business, and command success, as brains do and ever will in all departments of industry or professions —Iowa State Register.
