Southern Californian SATURDAY, JANUARY 4, 1873. Miscellaneous —Dr. Dio Lewis recommends young ladies to eat beans, if they wish to preserve the freshness of their complexion. —John Hopkins, the Baltimore millionaire, who died lately, left $2,000,000 to build hospitals for the poor of all denominations, without regard to color or sex. —The most valuable car load of California products ever forwarded East was shipped last Friday. It consisted of cloths and flannels rent to the Brooklyn Navy Yard by the Mission Woolen Mills; value, $44,000. —A number of the Catholic Bishops of France have addressed a letter to the Catholic Bishops of Germany, encouraging them in their opposition to the demands of the German Government. —Four women were chosen at the recent election in Boston as members of its School Committee, but Schoeitor Healy now steps in and gives an opinion that women cannot serve on that committee. —The yield of muster beans in Los Angeles county has reached fifty tons this year. About thirty tons were raised on the Azusa ranch and vicinity. The rate paid for this product, on delivery at the depot, has been this year $70 per ton, but the ensuing year $75 will be paid. The rate paid for this product, on delivery at the depot, has been this year $70 per ton, but the ensuing year $75 will be paid. Sometimes when a fellow gets into a streak of luck, he goes it with a rush, and vice versa, he goes with equal celerity to the devil. A few months ago Judge Hager married a St. Louis heiress said to be worth several millions, and now he is United States Senator. That is making tolerable headway, for a cripple. Mayor Brown of St. Louis has inaugurated a soup house in a part of the tobacco warehouse situated on the city property, adjoining the city hall, on 12th and Chestnut streets, it having been fitted for that purpose. About 200 men and women out of employment were served. This is a world of contrasts. For instance, a lady at a party the oth evening tapped her husband gently with her fan, and remarked: "Love, it is growing late; I think we had better go home." After getting home, she shook the rolling pin under his nose and said, "you infernal old scoundrel you, if you ever look at that mean, nasty, calico-faced, mackerel-eyed thing you fooled around with to night again, I'll bust your head wide open. We hear a queer story about what happened to one of our citizens who had just returned from Paris, whither he had gone on a visit to his mother. As soon as he got home, a gendarme entered the house and arrested him as a conscript. He was thrown into prison and kept there for two months, notwithstanding he showed that he was a citizen of the United States. His arrest not only cost him the hardship and ignominy of imprisonment, but one thousand francs which he had to pay his lawyer. We should think that this incident would furnish first-rate material for an international squabble.—Los Angeles Express. The thermometer marking an average of sixty degrees, with a clear sky and a yellow and soothing atmosphere; a vernal landscape stretching away to the snow capped mountains, an air of delicious repose overhanging our orange groves and vineyards—all go to inspire the stranger from ruder climes and hardier scenes, with a feeling of supreme admiration for a climate so mild and beautiful and a county so luxuriant and picturesque—L. A. Express. The old project to make a tunnel under the Straits of Dover, between France and England, has been again revived, a stock company having been formed in France to effect the purpose. It is believed that he formation to be penetrated is nothing but an immense bed of chalk, for the boring of which, machines have been invented that will bore a hole fifty-four feet deep and seven feet in diameter, in twenty-four hours. The estimated cost of the tunnel between Calais and Dover, twenty-three miles, is $50,000,000. The stock company asks no subsidies from either Government, but demands that it shall have a complete monopoly of the business of the tunnel. S. RESTAURANTS, RTC.
