Southern California SATURDAY, DECEMBER 27, 1873. Miscellaneous The Examiner is violently opposed to compulsory education, and from the structure of some of its articles, we infer that some of its immediate ancestors held to the same conservative opinion. Five hundred sheep have been killed in Bannington (Vt.) the past month, because it was more profitable to sell their pelts than to buy provender to winter them on. That is the difference between Vermont and California—here the sheep take care of themselves and save their pelts. In 1870, there were produced in the United States, 874,120,605 bushels of corn, of which California raised 1,305,000. The average price of corn throughout the United States was 92 cents; the price in California was 90 cents. Of the above crop Los Angeles raised 479,400 bushels—over one-third. A majority of the Senate are not in favor of the total repeal of the Bankruptcy Act, but of amending it in such particulars as will guard a debtor from exactions of a small minority of his creditors, leaving the question of involuntary bankruptcy to be determined by those largely interested. It is mentioned in the Grope Culturist that a large vineyardist in Illinois keeps each season not less than one hundred ducks constantly among his vines. He says it is wonderful with what diligence they dart after all kinds of bugs, thrips, flies and small snails, and he considers them among the best of insect exterminators. Information has been received from Havana that serious complications with regard to Cuba have arisen between the Spanish and British Governments. Advices did not state the precise nature of the difficulties, but it is rumored that the British Consul-General at Havana has received dispatches from Lord Granville to instruct all naval commanders in the West Indies to immediately rendezvous in Cuban ports. It is stated that in official circles it is certainly known that the British Government will demand the punishment of Burriel. The British Admiral has left for St. Thomas, where he expects to be relieved. A dispatch from Washington says: It has been known for some days that the Spanish Government has furnished evidence with regard to the Virginius and her claim to the right to bear the flag of United States, and that the President had submitted the evidence to Attorney General for his opinion. It seems now to be understood in official circles, that the Attorney-General has given his opinion that the vessel had forfeited the right to bear the flag of the United States, and at the time of her capture was carrying it without right and improperly. In view of this opinion, our Government will, in accordance with the terms of the protocol, institute an inquiry and adopt proceedings against the Virginius, and against any persons who may appear to have been guilty of illegalities in connection therewith. As Spain has reason to expect satisfaction from the United States, in that the Virginius was, at the time of her capture, carrying the United States flag without right, the salute on the 25th of December will be dispensed with as now not necessarily requirable; but the United States Government will expect a disclaimer of intent to offer indignity to its flag in the act which was committed. From proof submitted by Spain it appears that the clearance papers of the Virginius were obtained by porjury.
