Commented upon this fact a time, but it is a matter of so importance, it will bear free recurrence. Every one who noted carefully the manner growth of the vine has observed that the buds at the outer extremity of the canes begin to swell siderable earlier than those near main stem or body of the vine therefore, the pruning be delayed until the outer buds have swollen the inner buds will be corresponingly delayed in growing or shrinking. If, however, the vines be back early in the season, then buds left will be forced to develop correspondingly early, will be in condition to be injured the spring frost. STEWART & HILL, Carriage and Wagon that the buds at the outer extremity of the canes begin to swell siderable earlier than those near main stem or body of the vine therefore, the pruning be delayed until the outer buds have swollen the inner buds will be correspondingly delayed in growing or swelling. If, however, the vines be back early in the season, then buds left will be forced to develop correspondingly early, will be in condition to be injured the spring frost. These facts, understood, place the time of development of the fruit buds of wine to a considerable extent within the control of the vintager. It may be objected that while it may very easy for owners of small w yards to conform to the policy dedicated in the pruning of their vine it is impossible for those who have large vineyards to manage to do on account of the time required doing the work. That to manage large vineyard economically, work of pruning must commence in the fall and continue all winter and perhaps not be completed late in the spring. That the work of pruning must be done by skill labor, and it is impossible, even were equally economical, to obtain sufficient number of those skilled this work to do it at all unless commenced early in the season continued through the entire season in which it will do to continue it. To those who raise this object we would recommend a plan that has been successfully practiced one of the best and most extensive vine growers in the State, J. Nickerson, of Placer county. Nickerson puts his hands at work his vineyard at the usual time in the fall, and keeps the work up with the requirement of the general labor on his farm instead of completing the work pruning as they go along; however they lop off all the canes and supply growth except such as is intended to produce the fruit on our coming season. These they learn the whole length and undisturbed The branches thus cut off are gathered up and conveyed from our vineyard, and nine-tenths of its winter care of the vineyard is completed, and in this condition vineyard is left until danger from frost has entirely passed, in this spring. He then goes into the vine yard and finds the canes left at first pruning with the buds at the outer ends burst, and, perhaps leaves fully formed, while the buds on the same canes near the wood have scarcely commenced swelling. The work of cutting these canes off at the proper length, leaving CALIFORNIA BREWERY, Seventh North street, between Los Angeles and Lemon. ANAHEIM. F. Horse-Shoeing Is made a specialty at this establishment. Kindness, strict attention to business, and all work warranted is my motto. Wm. Crowther, Proprietor. The work of cutting the canes off at the proper length, leaving from two to four fruit buds each, according to circumstance; the strength of the vine, the number of fruit canes left on, and the relative vigor and location of the cane itself, is quickly accomplished. This way the whole question of lab at the proper time is solved; danger from frost is avoided and the water is completed at the proper time; the spring, and the additional expense has been but a mere trifle compared to the benefits and advantages secured. The practice of the plan by Mr. Nickerson, this spring, had the effect to exempt the vineyard from the damage done; the wine interest generally throughout the State by the late frosts, which under the common system would have been lost. We recommend the vine growers this year adopt the plan of pruning indicate and a good grape crop can secure fail to be secured. The holding firm check the development of the frudges in this way does not change perceptibly the time of ripening of the fruit, as the development after the last pruning is much more rapid and takes place when the season more advanced, and the weather becomes more even and favorable. Owing to this latter fact, it is believed the practice will do much prevent mildew, as this disease believed to be induced principally by sudden changes of weather. Sacramento Record. The Australian Guzan Tree. A communication was recently addressed to the French Academy of Science by a Mr. Gimbert, who has long been engaged in collecting evidence concerning eucalyptus globulus, a tree of extraordinary rapid growth, which attains huge dimensions, and appears to possess an extraordinary power of destroying miasmatic influence in fever-stricken districts. It has the singular property of absorbing ten times its weight of water from the soil, and of emitting antiseptic camphorous effluvia. When sown on marshy ground it will dry it up in a very short time. The English were the first to try it at the Cape, and within two or three years they completely changed the climatic condition of the unhealthy parts of the colony. A few years later, its plantation was undertaken on a large scale in various parts of Algeria. At Pardock, twenty miles from Algiers, a farm situated on the banks of the Hamayze, was noted for its extremely pestilential air. In the Spring of 1867 about 13,000 of the eucalyptus were planted there. In July of tho buds at the outer extremity times begin to swell conearlier than those near the in or body of the vine. If the pruning be delayed outer buds have swollen, buds will be corresponded in growing or swellhowever, the vines be cut in the season, then the will be forced to developrespondingly early, and condition to be injured by frost. These facts, well place the time of develof the fruit buds of the considerable extent within of the vintager. It may that while it may be for owners of small vinenards to conform to the policy in the pruning of their vines, possible for those who have wards to manage to do so of the time required in work. That to manage a yard economically, the pruning must commence and continue all winter, was not be completed till a spring. That the work must be done by skilled it is impossible, even if it is economical, to obtain a number of those skilled in to do it at all unless it be early in the season and through the entire season will do to continue it. who raise this objection, recommend a plan that successfully practiced by best and most extensive ers in the State, J. It seems to be a pretty general impression that Paul was a bachelor, and many ladies of the present day have formed an opinion of him which is decidedly unfavorable. I believe, and propose to show, that Paul was actually a married man and a strong advocate of "Woman's Rights." The Corinthian Church had written to him for directions upon the subject of matrimony in a time of great persecution, and, under the circumstances, he seems to think that for the time being the unmarried had better remain so. Eusebius, Clement and other historians speak of Paul as a married man, and according to the best historical evidence we can get, he was at the time of writing this epistle a widower. And thus he remained true to his dead, and admonished other men who had lost their wives to pursue a similar course. Is there anything very objectionable in this admirable and nine-tenths of the vineyard is come in this condition the left until danger from entirely passed, in the then goes into the vine-lands the canes left at the ring with the buds at the burst, and, perhaps, formed, while the buds the canes near the old scarcely commenced the work of cutting these at the proper length, leave two to four fruit buds on leading to circumstances. In of the vine, the number lies left on, and the relation location of the cane quickly accomplished. In the whole question of labor over time is solved, danger is avoided and the work at the proper time in and the additional exe-oen but a mere trifle, to the benefits and advan-ced. The practice of this ear. Nickerson, this last effect to exempt his farm the damage done to interest generally through by the late frosts, and on a handsome income, over the common system, been lost. We recomme-nate growers this year to plan of pruning indicated, grape crop can scarcely secured. The holding in development of the fruit way does not change the time of ripening of the development after thing is much more rapid place when the season is cold, and the weather has are even and favorable. This latter fact, it is be practice will do much to hide, as this disease is be induced principally by changes of weather. A postical editor down South, states the case thus feelingly: "Our fellow townsman, John Knox, went galloping out of town on a pale horse the other night." In plain prose, Mr. Knox had kicked the bucket.
