fortune in a year, and are not willing to work for wages to pay for land. They settle in far off places and bring up their families in ignorance. They are bewildered by the difference between expectation and reality, anticipation and present distress, the wonderful incomes of a few and the poverty of the many. They clutch for chances, and are always failing. Let such stay at home, where the pulse of expectation does not beat at fever heat, and where moderate gains are accessible to all. The mirage which travelers in Africa describe, I have seen here with wonderful distinctness—water, woods, and the reflection of the sky in perfect naturalness. But when the spot is reached the illusion is gone. Men whose habit of mind is to seek for, and locate their homes beside such waters should beware of California. They will be sure to wake up in bitter disappointment. To the industrious, willing to work and wait, possessing enough capital to purchase land and to endure the disappointments of first experiments, and to invalids able to sustain themselves, the country offers every advantage. Nordhoff, in his book on Southern California, gives the bright side fairly, it at the start the bread be plenty and the waters sure. Invalids cannot depend on procuring profitable employment here, for places of tolerable ease are thronged by the disappointed and healthy class. But men of character and enterprise can always make openings for themselves. Ministers out of health, to whom this climate would be almost as life from the dead, would be the most difficult class to provide for.

But men of character and enterprise can always make openings for themselves. Ministers out of health, to whom this climate would be almost as life from the dead, would be the most difficult class to provide for.
Dr. James McCoy, a cultivated physician from Illinois, is now erecting at Westminster, a comfortable home for invalids, with the intention of enlarging it into a complete sanitarium in the future. This meets a great want in this whole country. We can promise the invalid pure air and pure water, and exemption from both cold and intense heat the year round; the ocean for bathing in summer; all kinds of small game for hunting—quail, hare, rabbit, wild geese, and ducks; mountains to explore, and excursions of all kinds to enjoy. All diseases that require open-air living for a cure, will find here the best conditions possible. And those who are hard to suit, will find in a radius of sixty miles, such a variety of climate, from seashore to mountain-side, artesian water and medicinal springs, that nothing seems to be lacking. Let them, however, bring two things besides their means of subsistence, a quiet heart, and willingness to endure some roughness in their campings.

Mammoth Growths.
The resources of Los Angeles county are but just being developed. Wherever land can be irrigated there vegetation springs forth, probably more rapidly than in any other portion of the United States. On a recent tour of the county, during which time we visited nearly every neighborhood, and were brought into direct contact with farmers every day, we noted many instances where vegetation had produced almost marvelous results—some of which we give below.
In the Compton settlement, along the San Gabriel river, from El Monte to the College, in the Gospel Swamp settlement, and in other localities, we saw corn which would produce one hundred and fifty bushels to the acre; most of the ears in some fields would be four or five feet above the reach of a tall man, and many stalks would be twenty feet in height. One hundred bushels to the acre was quite a common crop.

One hundred bushels to the acre was quite a common crop.
On the farm of J. J. Welch, who resides in Gospel Swamp, we found a beet that weighed two hundred and thirty pounds. In the front yard of Mr. Carter, who resides near the College—Los Nietos settlement, we saw a beet so large that we dare not estimate its size. We regret since leaving there, that we did not measure its circumference.
At Mr. Layman's, in Gospel Swamp, we saw two pumpkins, one of which weighed two hundred and one pounds, and the other two hundred and eighteen. These two specimens grew within two rods of each other.
Mr. Parker, who resides some two miles East of Anaheim, showed us a grape vine over eighteen feet in length, which grew from a cutting put out sixteen months previous.
On the ranch of Wm. D. Farts, at Florence, are to be seen accacia trees twenty feet high, only eighteen months from the seed; these trees have grown without irrigation.
On another farm belonging to Mr. Fairs, near Los Nietos an Early June apple tree gave one good crop of apples last June, and another crop of June apples in November. The blossoms for the second crop appeared on the tree after the first crop had been gathered. — Mutual Aid.
