From a Presbyterian stand-up such as your readers occupy vast territory is called, ecclesially, the new Presbytery of Angeles, with six churches in principal towns, nine ministers about one hundred and fifty bbers. The founder of Presbyterian colony of Westminster is one of our missionaries, the L.P. Webber. He first obeyed control of about six thousand below Anaheim, about five miles from the ocean. Then he issued prospectus, inviting co-operators from Presbyterians and all like-minded. Two years ago first family responded. There now here about forty families various denominations, a school, a church of twenty-members, and a community cannot be matched in South California for intelligence and character. There are some thirty still for sale, and some town looms the original price. When they filled, the process of cutting larger farms will begin, until settlement is compact. These are held by a San Francisco company, which owns in all here ninety thousand acres. The Mr. Webber simply controls sales in the colony limits, with small compensation from the owners, which has proved to be equal to the necessary expenses has incurred His reward in gathering in Southern California a body of people earnest and ready in the support of religion and cation, and we trust that the company will become a foundation of influences, and an attraction help to those seeking homes in section. The company so far in the colony, that the price of land still below what is asked for outside. As a country with a clipper Southern California offers pea DEAN SWIFT'S death, there was this desk a paper containing a lock possibly dead Stella's—with the Only a Woman's Hair." Life of lovelit days, Oem that never palls; By the warmest rays, Ruly thy sint recalls. Used thy glowing gold, Vanished its glitter rare; Only 'twas bought and sold— Only a woman's hair." INCINCTIONS AND ATTRACTIONS. For about nine months in the year we have no rain. Sunshine succeeds sunshine with unvarying regularity. The workman need not lose ten days in the year from stormy weather. Plans can be made a month ahead, without the Eastern proviso, "if it does not rain." In summer, a mild haze, or a soft fog, obscures the sun early in the day, and just as the clear sunshine comes out hot in the quiet air, the invariable sea breeze rises to temper and freshen it to perfect comfort. We had a cloudy day recently, in October, and a child gave its unconscious impression of these summer days, by saying that it seemed like morning all day long. The same child shouted with astonishment one rainy day last winter, to see me going out to dinner with an umbrella. The winter rains are not unlike the summer rains of Philadelphia, rarely lasting twenty-four hours, and rarely coming twice in the same week. Our entire rainfall last winter was only nine inches, not as much as they had in one storm this summer in Illinois. Most visitors prefer our winter seasons, as the grass starts with the first rains and the country suggests. Southern California. BY REV. R. STRONG. Editors—A former correspondent of your paper has wandered this south-western corner country, and likes it well to stay. A sojourn of nearly years has enabled him to hasty judgments, and he will willingly meet in print serious inquiries, both public state, which throng upon us. Science had not taught us there one hundred talk of mere, ninety and nine days we would expect at least three thousand visitors this year which characterizes our self some can be persuaded they are better off at home, I am well pleased as I shall be the legitimate desire for inquiry among those who need seeking just such a country. Southern California begins at onceception on the north, and to San Diego, a distance of two hundred and fifty miles. We are mainly confined to California, because here are the best facilities for trade, and the bodies of agricultural land Barbara heads the list on the South San Buenaventura thirty miles now it. The connecting valleys Los Angeles, San Gabriel and Ana rivers come next, a span of rich land, with two settlements—Los Angeles north, and Anaheim on the south again (ninety miles). Diego, just touching the border. San Bernardino only inland town of any consortry miles from the coast. Presbyterian standpoint, four readers occupy, this territory is called, ecclesiastical new Presbytery of Los Angeles with six churches in the towns, nine ministers, and the hundred and fifty members. The founder of the brian colony of Westminster our missionaries, the Rev. Robert. He first obtained about six thousand acres, it seemed like morning all day long. Most visitors prefer our winter seasons, as the grass starts with the firsts rains, and the country suggests and feels like an Eastern May. But the peculiar advantage here is that both summer and winter are pleasant and healthy. Taking the year through, the testimony of travelers is that the climate excels any known place on the globe. Observations made in Mentone, France; Aiken, S.C., and Anaheim, for the months of December, January, and February, give the following results: At Aiken, rain 14 days, snow 1 day, strong winds 32 days; at Mentone, rain 28 days, strong winds 23 days; at Anaheim, rain 13 days, strong winds 3 days. At Anaheim this last winter, an invalid could have been out of doors all day eighty-one days, and confined in doors by bad weather only nine days. It naturally follows from this unvarying pleasantness of the weather that agriculture has the disadvantage of droughts. Artificial irrigation is a necessity. It was thought that the lands of the colony would be an exception to this from their nearness to surface water. But for two years the seasons have been unusually dry; the crops of grain have nearly failed, and poor owners were discouraged. Their extremity has been met by a wonderful blessing from God. The first experiment proved that there was a large subterranean river beneath them, which could be tapped and turned into flowing artesian wells, and this has now become the prominent advantage and attraction of this location. The water rises through a seven-inch pipe, cool, soft and pure as when it leaves the mountains. Thirty of these wells are now constantly flowing, with an average capacity to irrigate thirty acres, and new wells are being bored as fast as the machinery will do the work. With these wells, ordinary prosperity is secure, with God's blessing. They need not envy the ditches above us, for the wells are better. They share the common ambition to produce oranges, lemons, limes, figs, raisins, almonds, English walnuts, and all common fruits. These will be the wealth of Southern California. At present prices they will yield (net) from $300 to $1,000. only inland town of any constant sixty miles from the coast.
