Southern Californian SATURDAY, DECEMBER 6, 1873. NEW GRANGE SONG. It is an ancient farmer, And he is one of three; He said unto the middleman, "We have no need of thee." Chorus. Hurrah! Hurrah for the Grange! The glorious Labor Exchange! Where those who eat And raise the wheat Together meet And trades complete! Hurrah! Hurrah for the Grange • "This man here makes his cloth, And sells it unto me; He buys my wheat, and thus we save The slice that went to thee." Chorus. "Your eyes too dim are growing; Get spectacles," said he, "That you may see some higher grade Of wheat than number three." Chorus. The cunning middleman Laughed out "Ha-ha, te-he, Upon your back I'll stand and fill My pockets from the tree!" Chorus. Then turned that ancient farmer The middleman about, And with some words of kind advice, He gently kicked him out. Chorus. Miscellaneous. Nothing turns a woman's head like a bonnet going past her. Duluth sportsmen use Northern Pacific railroad bonds for wadding. A raffle for a kit of burglar's tools Then turned that ancient farmer The middleman about, And with some words of kind advice, He gently kicked him out. Chorus. Miscellaneous. Nothing turns a woman's head like a bonnet going past her. Duluth sportsmen use Northern Pacific railroad bonds for wadding. A raffle for a kit of burglar's tools netted $85 to a Chicago widow. Sleeping cars now carry hot bricks for the benefit of old maids whose feet need warming. An effort is making to stock some of the mountain streams of Nevada with trout. A Kentucky apple tree has just yielded its eighteenth crop. It was an unrepentant horse thief. A Dubuque couple met on the horse cars; he paid her fare; she smiled, and they were married after dinner. An Indiana Judge has decided that a woman has a right to cuff her hired girl for leaving an outside door open. Theodore Moreno, the member of the Vasquez gang, who has been on trial in Salinas City for being concerned in the Tres Pinos tragedy, has been found guilty of murder in the second degree, and sentenced to imprisonment for life. Michael Sullivan, the great Illinois farmer lost ten thousand acres of corn by frost, and has only halt a crop on fifteen thousand acres. He has discharged one hundred and fifty farm laborers, chiefly colored men from Tennessee. A Dayton, O., man drowned himself because his wife persisted in going to Cincinnati against his will—to see her sister. He must have believed that those Cincinnati folks were no better than they ought to be. Captain Clarke of the Sunrise has been sentenced to fourteen month's imprisonment in the county jail and $1,000 fine, Harris, the first mate, to four years' imprisonment in the State Prison, and Malloy, the second mate, to two months in the county jail. Says the Antioch Ledger: "Now is the best time for the farmers to sow grain upon their summer-fallow-land. Some of our most practical and experienced agriculturists, who have made the business a study for some years, say that if summer-fallow-land is again plowed after the first rains, and then sowed and well harrowed, a good crop may be comm- Says the Antioch Ledger: "Now is the best time for the farmers to sow grain upon their summer-fallowed land. Some of our most practical and experienced agriculturists, who have made the business a study for some years, say that if summer-fallowed land is again plowed after the first rains, and then sowed and well harrowed, a good crop may be counted on—award of the mains are short. It is certain that no harm can come of such an experiment, but on the contrary, there is every reason to believe that it will result in great practical utility to farmers. The first showers have come, and if our agricultural men would profit by this experience they must hasten to improve the golden moments while they last." Every farmer who has had occasion to drive a nail into seasoned oak-posts, knows its liability to bend and break. If the point be moistened in the mouth, it will usually drive more kindly. Oil is still better but it is inconvenient to dip each nail separately into it. Another point observed, is that boards become loose eventually from the rusting of the nails, which, communicating to the wood, causes not only an enlargement of the nail hole, but the wearing away of the nail itself, rendering the fence or the building shaky and insecure. This may be prevented by heating any rough grease until it smokes, and then pouring it over the nails to be used. The grease will penetrate the pores of the iron, and cause the nails to last without rusting, an indefinite period. Besides this, no trouble will then be experienced in driving them into the hardest wood. The reason is that the coating of grease prevents contact by air, and consequently oxidation. Oxygen is the great destroyer of iron, and moisture is the inducing cause. ANTERS' HOTEL JOHN FISCHER, PROPRIETOR. Center and Los Angeles Mile NAHEIM, CAL.
