There is much that is interesting in the study of the origin of the names of the States of the Union, as they are derived from a variety of sources. To begin in the geographical order, we first have Maine, which takes its name from the province of Maine, in France, and was so called in compliment to the Queen of Charles I., Henrietta, its owner. New Hampshire—first called Laconia—from Hampshire, England. Vermont, from the Green Monutains (in French, verd mont.) Massachusetts, from the Indian language; signifying "The country about the great hill." Rhode Island gets its name from the fancied resemblance of the island to that of Rhodes in the ancient Levant. Connecticut's name was Mohegan, spelled originally, "Quon-oh-ta-out, signifying "A long river." New York was so named as a compliment to the Duke of York, whose brother, Charles II., ceded him that territory. New Jersey was named by one of its original proprietors, Sir George Carteret, after the Island of Jersey, in the British Channel, of which he was governor. Warren County Grangers raised $2,500 to start a Grange elevator in Indianola. It is stated that farmers' Granges are being organized in Indiana at the rate of about twenty-five a week. The Grangers in their local platforms, have universally pronounced against the exclusiveness of the right to issue circulating notes now enjoyed by the National Banks. The organization of one thousand Granges last month seems to indicate that "something will yet be heard from the farmers," in a manner and form not very interesting to monopolists. The manufacture of harvesters, under the patent purchased by the Patrons of Husbandry, will not be carried on exclusively at Des Moines. Grand Master Smedley says contracts for their manufacture will be let at three different points in the State. One good thing which the Grangers propose to do is to teach farmers how to take care of their agricultural implements. A majority of Western farmers, it is said, leave their high cost machines uncovered over winter. Louisiana—named in honor of Louis XIV. Mississippi derives its name from that of the great river, which is, in the Naches tongue. "The Father of the Waters." Arkansas is derived from the Indian word, Kansas, "Smoky Water," with the French prefix of ark, "a bow." Tennessee is an Indian name, meaning "The river with the big bend." Kentucky—an Indian name—"Kain-tuck-cee," signifying "At the head of the river." Ohio—Shawnee name for "Beautiful river." Indiana's name is derived from that of the Indians. Illinois' name is derived from the Indian word "Illinois," men, and the French affix "els," making it "Tribes of Men." Wisconsin's name is said to be the Indian name for a wild, rushing channel. Missouri is also an Indian name for muddy, having reference to the muddiness of Missouri river. Kansas—the Indian name for smoky water. The derivation of the names of Nebraska and Nevada is unknown. Iowa signifies, in the Indian language, "The drowsy ones," and Minnesota, "The Cloudy Waters." It is depicted that the Patrons of Husbandry intend to make indiscriminate warfare on railroads and corporations. No one who has given the subject any real attention could for a moment entertain any other idea of the intentions of the farming community, than that they mean simple resistance to unfair demands, and the discovery and utilization of some means of getting their products to the consumer at a rate of expense less than the present.
