Southern Californian SATURDAY. NOVEMBER 29, 1873. Miscellaneous. A watering place correspondent writes that "very few bathers bathe at the West End," when upon Mrs. Partington says she "had an idea that they bathed all over." The investigation by Dr. Linderman, of Chicago, against General Lagrange, Superintendent of the mint in San Francisco, resulted in the acquittal of that gentleman on all charges preferred against him as a citizen and in his official capacity. The Anglo-American steamer, Robert Lowe, left Placentia for St. John on November 19th, and struck on a reef on the 20th. It was impossible to get the life boats afloat, on account of the heavy sea that was moving. Three other boats were got away with twenty-three persons in them. The rest, eighteen in all, were drowned. The farmers of this valley are busily engaged in putting in the seed for another crop. Experience has proven to the satisfaction of all that early sown land is most certain to produce a crop, and, therefore a large area will this year be seeded before the commencement of the heavy rains. — Stockton Independent. The Vienna Exposition, says the Sacramento Union, cost the Austrian government six millions of dollars more than it yielded from visitors. The Vienna Exposition, says the Sacramento Union, cost the Austrian government six millions of dollars more than it yielded from visitors. The sale of the buildings may reduce this amount by a million and a half or two millions. The whole affair was a miserable failure and a lasting reproach to most of the nations interested in it. A pretty careful census in 1870 made the white population only 400 in the whole Frontera of Lower California, comprehended between our boundary line and San Fernando Mission, from north to south, and the Gulf of California from east to west—that is to say, within an area of sixty-five thousand square miles. The Los Angeles Express says: "The Clarendon has a French cook who is a ventriloquist of the first order. He carries on conversations with imaginary persons in a wonderful manner. Voices are heard in the ovens, from under the tables, and from every corner, sometimes seeming to be a mile off, and at others rising from the barrels. He has scared the Chinamen nearly to death and they firmly believe he is akin to the devil. The Butte Record remarks: "This State has now about 8,000,000 head of sheep, which will be increased by at least 3,000,000 lambs the present season. The sheep are sheared twice a year, and, with a good season, the clips might be expected to average ten pounds per head. This would make the wool crop of California 80,000,000 pounds, or 15,000,000 more than the total product of the United States in 1871." A man of average talkativeness speaks three hours a day, and at the rate of 100 words a minute; that is to say, enough words to fill about twenty-nine octave pages in moderate print every hour, six hundred pages in a week, and in one year, fifty-two large volumes. The miserable man who got up these statistics says that if you multiply these numbers by ten you arrive at about the talk of a woman. An amusing incident occurred at Eldora the other evening. A man who had recently buried his wife got married again immediately, much to the disgust of his neighbors who, to be revenged, turned out in large numbers and gave him a roused An amusing incident occurred at Eldora the other evening. A man who had recently buried his wife got married again immediately, much to the disgust of his neighbors who, to be revenged, turned out in large numbers and gave him a rousing charivari. The easily consoled husband stood the packet as long as possible, when he came to the door and administered a scathing rebuke to the crowd in this manner: 'Ain't you ashamed of yourselves to be making such a noise about my house when a funeral took place here but four days ago?' A terrible accident occurred in New York on Friday, by the explosion of a boiler used for lifting dirt from a cutting in the New York and Hudson River Railroad improvement, by which seven persons were instantly killed. While a number of laborers were engaged moving an upright boiler along the west side of the embankment, about fifty feet above 128th street, with planks and crow-bars, it suddenly exploded, killing four men and a boy who were around the boiler at the time, and a young lady and a little girl, who were at least fifty feet from the boiler when it exploded. The shock is described as being like an earthquake, and so violent was the concussion that the houses for blocks around were shaken to their very foundation. When the excitement of the shock had somewhat subsided, the awful effects of the explosion could be seen. Near by the shattered boiler lay four men, three of them with their heads and some of their limbs completely blown away, while a man and a little boy lay close together, mangled in the most awful manner. The death-dealing fragments of the boiler flow in all directions. REAL ESTATE, ETC. THE STEARNS RANCHOS.
