Carlyle "Marseillaise the luckiest composition ever promulgated sounds of which will make blood tingle in men's veins whole armies and assemblage sing it with eyes weeping aing, with hearts defiant at despot and devil." There is this passionate and stormy pity about the "Wacht am Rhein is only at best a song of omniment and defense without peril despair, and not by any means the level of the unparalleled triumph which was Germany at the time when it to be popular. Still there little doubt that it will public memory in association the events of 1870, as Arnold of the German Fatherland membered in connection with of 1813; as "Partant pour is enshrined with Napoleon 'Lillibullero' brings with selections of the fall of divine England. In many landholders are trees, and in Illinois e have been made on which mate the cost of planting rating trees. "Wacht am Rhine." composer of the "Watch on Rhine," who died a few weeks ago happy enough to enjoy the success and celebrity of his com-mon. No such early tribute of recognition gladdened the composer of that far war price of war music, the Villaise." The "Wacht am Rhine" was not an inspiration of artistic genius, but it was an indication of its kind, and it hit a revailing mood, and came to expression of the national sentiment on the very eve of battle. The earliest days of the war in 1783, it superseded all the older greater hymns of German reality. Long after events had barely settled that there was no protection the Rhine, and after the "Watch" had left her care of herself and gone to the French into Paris, the popular anthem still remained in every city in the resolve of Germany to enjoy her river. Carlyle calls the Villaise the luckiest musical position ever promulgated, the which will make the Career of the "Virginius." Very few persons are acquainted with the history of the ill-fated steamship, Virginia. She is well known, however, to the frequenters of yacht races. She was formerly known as the Edgar Stuart. The vessel was built in the year 1869, at Guildford, Conn., for Mr. Orson Blunt, a prominent member of the Brooklyn Yacht Club, who resides near Sing Sing. She was built as a screw schooner, and belonged to the port of New York. She was purchased some two years ago from Mr. Blunt by Mr. John Patterson of New Jersey, the writer was informed on good authority, as the agent of those interested in the Cuban rebellion. After the purchase was made, she was sent to Newburg, where she underwent alterations at a cost of not less than $100,000. She then returned to this city, and cleared this port under the name of the Virginia. Mr. Patterson is said to have acted as middleman in the transaction, as he is a man of moderate means only, and would have no particular use for such a vessel. He was formerly engaged Patrons of Husbandry. A meeting of the committee appointed by the District Council to arrangements for an anniver- celebration on the 4th day o' Deer next, the following prome was adopted. Music by the Band. By Rev. S. G. Settle, Chaplain of the District Council. Singing Ode—Full Chorus of Patrons. By P. C. Tonner, of Eureka Grange. Music. By Ion. John S. Thompson, of Los Angeles Grange. Music. Dinner. Miscellaneous Speaking. Other particulars will be trans- tued to Masters of Granges. That portion of the public who friendly to the "Farmers' Move- are cordially invited to meet us. Order of the Committee Not long ago died the Col. Russell known in the South-West as "Owl Russell," who was once Henry Clay's private Secretary. He was a man of intense egotism, whose chief object in life was to be admired and notorious. Years and years ago, while in the Missouri Legislature, he got the soubriquet which clung to him all the rest of his life, and actually carried him out of his political career. It was during a violent debate in which he had shown an absurd pomposity, that one of his political comrades arose and quietly told a little story. He said that one night Russell, while traveling through the woods, lost his way, and being a stranger in that part of the country, became rather nervous. While in this sorry plight, he suddenly heard a voice not far away, calling out, "Who, who, who are you?" The answer was loud and prompt: "I am Col. William H. Russell, for many years a prominent member of the Kentucky Legislature, was School Commissioner for the southern district of Kentucky, am now the Representative of Caloway county in the Missouri Legislature, am spoken of as the Whig candidate Congress and I am lost. The present terminus of the Anabranch of the railroad has been selected as the place of meetand the committee desire all agents to be on the ground uptly at 10½ o'clock, as exercise will begin at 11. Other particulars will be transferred to Masters of Granges. That portion of the public who friendly to the "Farmers' Moveture" are cordially invited to meet us. By order of the Committee. J. F. Marquis, Sect'y. Plant Trees. When ye've naethin' else to do, lie, be aye stickin' in a tree, it'll growin' when ye're sleepin', is a mode of advice that should be kept by all the "Jamies" in the estat, who have of late years been engaged when they had nothing to do, in cutting trees down. It said that in some parts of Western Canada, so great has been the destion of forests, that considerative rivers had nearly dried up, going little to be seen along their rivers but barren sand banks, and last year 250 square miles of forests were cut down upon, head waters of the Mississippi its tributaries. In Nebraska, my landholders are planting trees, and in Illinois experiments been made on which to estimate the cost of planting and cultiting trees. One cost is estimated range from $46 to $190 per acre, ordering to the kind of tree plantment but whatever may be the cost, the planting, from the relations resting between woodlands and the apply of rain, and the preservation of the springs, may become a accessity if forests of a natural growth are recklessly destroyed. America consumes annually 6, 0,000 pounds of Turkish figs in and figgers. Bee-keepers' Meeting. The Bee-keepers' Association of Los Angeles county, met at El Monte, on the 15th instant. In the absence of the president, Mr. John W. Wilson called the meeting to order. The committee on number of bees and amount of honey reported 3,117 hives of bees in this county and probably many more, which they had not been able to find. The honey yield of these bees for last season was estimated at at least 160,000 pounds. L. Richardson exhibited a well made two-pound square tin can, manufactured by himself, and said that such canould be made for five cents apiece. A committee on the best way of making artificial swarms was apopointed. The same committee were required to answer, "What are the advantages accruing by artificial swarming over natural swarming?" Seventeen British subjects were among the 110 captives of the Virginius who were shot.
